Understanding the effects of alcohol policies on treatment admissions and birth outcomes among young pregnant people.

BACKGROUND: This study examines whether state-level alcohol policy types in the United States relate to substance use disorder treatment admissions and birth outcomes among young pregnant and birthing people. METHODS: We used data from the Treatment Episode Data Set: Admissions (TEDS-A) and Vital Statistics birth data for 1992-2019. We examined 16 state-level policies, grouped into three types: youth-specific, general population, and pregnancy-specific alcohol policies. Using Poisson and logistic regression, we assessed policy effects for those under 21 (aged 15-20) and considered whether eff

Lifestyle risk factors for oral cancer.

The "style of life is the unique way in which individuals try to realize their fictional final goal and meet or avoid the three main tasks of life: work, community, love" (Alfred Adler, founder of the Individual Psychology). Lifestyle refers to the way individuals live their lives and how they handle problems and interpersonal relations. The lifestyle behaviours associated to oral cancer with convincing evidence are tobacco use, betel quid chewing, alcohol drinking, low fruit and vegetable consumption (the detrimental lifestyle is high fat and/or sugar intake, resulting in low fruit and/or veg…

United Kingdom Multicentre Acamprosate Study (UKMAS): a 6-month prospective study of acamprosate versus placebo in preventing relapse after withdrawal from alcohol.

A 6-month randomized controlled study of acamprosate versus placebo in preventing relapse following withdrawal from alcohol was undertaken in 20 centres throughout the UK. Patients diagnosed as alcohol-dependent and detoxified within the preceding 5 weeks were randomly assigned to treatment with either acamprosate (A) 666 mg three times/day or identical placebo (P). A total of 664 patients were screened; 581 were entered into the treatment phase. One-third were episodic drinkers, 84% were male, 44% were unmarried and 48% were unemployed. Medication was first taken on average 24 days after the

Fenofibrate restores glutamatergic and dopaminergic homeostasis in the nucleus accumbens and reduces alcohol relapse in rats.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is associated with dysregulation of glutamatergic and dopaminergic signaling within the nucleus accumbens (NAc), contributing to withdrawal syndrome, craving, and relapse. Fenofibrate, an agonist of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα), reduces alcohol intake; however, its effects on NAc neurotransmission and the relative contributions of central versus peripheral mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we investigated whether fenofibrate administration initiated during alcohol withdrawal and continued throughout reaccess reduces relapse drinking, an

A neuroimmune framework for understanding adolescent stress and risk of alcohol misuse.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) represents a critical public health challenge, with early-life adversity conferring heightened risk for compulsive drinking patterns. Alcohol has long been known to exert direct effects on developing neurotransmitter systems, targeting among others GABAergic, glutamatergic, and dopaminergic signaling. Recent evidence however indicates that early adversity also primes microglial activation and establishes chronic low-grade neuroinflammation, disrupting maturation of prefrontal-limbic-striatal circuits governing executive control and affect regulation. Hence, alcohol u

Examining how the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic affected alcohol use in different socio-demographic groups in an Australian representative longitudinal sample.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Research examining how alcohol consumption changed across different socio-demographic groups during the pandemic has largely relied upon convenience samples recruited after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to measure whether the pandemic shifted alcohol consumption in different gender, age and income groups in Australia. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a longitudinal study using four waves (2017-20) of the annual Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey to compare pre-pandemic consumption (2017-19) with cons

Young Australian drinkers' awareness, perceptions and behaviours towards low alcohol beverage products.

Background: Young Australian drinkers (aged 18-24 years) are more likely to consume alcohol at risky levels than any other age group. The increased availability and diversity of low alcohol beverages (LAB)s available to Australian consumers presents an opportunity for young drinkers to moderate their drinking behaviours. Aim: To explore young risky drinkers' awareness, perceptions and behaviours towards LAB products. Study Type: A cross-sectional online survey of 159 young Australian risky drinkers aged 18-24 years. Methods: Demographic information, LAB awareness, previous consumption and perc

Effects of prazosin treatment on liver enzymes are moderated by alcohol withdrawal symptoms in individuals with alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is associated with significant liver pathology marked by elevated liver enzymes. Prazosin, an alpha1-noradrenergic antagonist significantly improves alcohol drinking outcomes in individuals with alcohol withdrawal symptoms (AW), but effects on liver enzymes are unknown. We assessed the effects of prazosin treatment on the liver enzymes alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) in individuals with AUD. METHODS: Participants (N=100) with AUD were enrolled in a 12-week randomized controlled trial and recei…

Characterizing polysubstance use: What do we know about use of cigarettes, vaping products, cannabis, and alcohol among Canadians?

INTRODUCTION: Polysubstance use--the use of multiple substances on the same or different occasions--is a risk factor for substance use disorder. However, national surveillance of substance use in Canada has often focused on use of a single substance. To better understand and address polysubstance use, this study characterized the use of vaping products, cigarettes, inhaled cannabis, and alcohol among Canadians aged 15 years and older. METHODS: Nationally representative data from the 2020 Canadian Tobacco and Nicotine Survey were analyzed. Polysubstance use was assessed as use of at least two

The conversation matters: a qualitative study exploring the implementation of alcohol screening and brief interventions in antenatal care in Scotland.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol screening and brief intervention (SBI) in antenatal care is internationally recommended to prevent harm caused by alcohol exposure during pregnancy. There is, however, limited understanding of how SBI is implemented within antenatal care; particularly the approach taken by midwives. This study aimed to explore the implementation of a national antenatal SBI programme in Scotland. METHODS: Qualitative interviews were conducted with antenatal SBI implementation leaders (N = 8) in eight Scottish health boards. Interviews were analysed thematically and using the 'practical, rob

Exploring structural relationships between blood alcohol concentration and signs and clinical assessment of intoxication in alcohol-involved injury cases.

AIMS: Although the relationship between the Y90 (blood alcohol concentration, BAC) and Y91 (clinician intoxication assessment) ICD-10 codes has received attention recently, the role of 10 signs of intoxication in the Y91-Y90 relationship has not been studied yet. This work examines these signs in the estimation of alcohol intoxication levels of patients in medical settings. METHODS: Collected and analyzed were data on 1997 injured emergency room patients from 17 countries worldwide reporting drinking prior to injury or presenting with a non-zero BAC from 17 countries worldwide. A model is est

Alcohol and alkalosis enhance excystation of Opisthorchis viverrini metacercariae.

The northeastern region of Thailand has long been known as an endemic area of the human liver fluke infection which is caused by Opisthorchis viverrini. Humans are infected by ingestion of uncooked cyprinoid fish in traditional dishes such as "koi-pla," "pla-som," "pla-jom," and "pla-ra." To date, the prevalence of this parasite infection remains high because of cultural behavior and local beliefs. The popular misunderstanding among people in this area is that alcohol, lemon juice, and fish sauce can kill the parasites. Thus, they believe that they can eat raw fish without the risk of infectio

Quetiapine for treatment of alcohol dependence.

Quetiapine is an atypical antipsychotic that has sedative effects. In this retrospective study, indices of alcohol use were compared for alcohol-dependent subjects who either were (n = 30) or were not (n = 20) treated with quetiapine (25 to 200 mg nightly) for disturbed sleep. Indices examined included total days of abstinence, number of hospitalizations for detoxification, and days to first relapse over 1 year of clinic treatment. Subjects were male veterans. All subjects had a diagnosis of alcohol dependence, and 90% of subjects in each group were also diagnosed with posttraumatic stress dis
