Interpersonal violence, alcohol use, and acquired capability for suicide.

Acquired capability for suicide (ACS), defined as pain tolerance and fearlessness about death, is theorized as necessary to enact suicide. This study examined the associations of interpersonal violence and alcohol use with ACS in 502 college students. General fearlessness/pain tolerance was positively associated with male gender and alcohol use. Fearlessness about death was positively associated with male gender and general physical violence perpetration. However, these risk factors did not explain variance in ACS beyond male gender and history of suicide attempts/nonsuicidal self-injury. Thes

Hippocampal abnormalities in youth with alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder.

Individuals diagnosed with alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND) exhibit difficulty on hippocampally mediated memory tasks and show reduced hippocampal size. However inconsistencies exist regarding the affected memory functions and where within the hippocampi effects occur. Given recent studies showing anterior and posterior segments support distinct memory functions and sex dimorphisms in hippocampal function, we asked whether these factors influence memory performance in youth with ARND (n = 18) and typically developing controls (n = 17). Participants received a battery of memor

Glia and neurodevelopment: focus on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

During the last 20 years, new and exciting roles for glial cells in brain development have been described. Moreover, several recent studies implicated glial cells in the pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental disorders including Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, Rett Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). Abnormalities in glial cell development and proliferation and increased glial cell apoptosis contribute to the adverse effects of ethanol on the developing brain and it is becoming apparent that the effects of fetal alcohol are due, at least in part, to

[Alcohol and pregnancy: advantage of a screening questionnaire -- a population study].

INTRODUCTION: Foetal consequences of an alcoholic exposure in utero may vary according to the intensity of that exposure. A dose-threshold below which alcohol consumption by a pregnant woman would be harmless has not been highlighted. In spite of the recommendations of total abstinence, women's percentage declaring a posteriori to have had a contact with alcohol during pregnancy remains relatively high. We intended to estimate the performance of an auto-questionnaire for the screening of these consumptions. This questionnaire also had to assess the information received by the women about the d

Maternal periconceptional alcohol consumption and congenital limb deficiencies.

BACKGROUND: Women of childbearing age report high rates of alcohol consumption, which may result in alcohol exposure during early pregnancy. Epidemiological research on congenital limb deficiencies (LDs) and periconceptional exposure to alcohol is inconclusive. METHODS: Data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS) were examined for associations between LDs and patterns of maternal periconceptional (1 month before conception through the first trimester) alcohol consumption among LD case (n = 906) and unaffected control (n = 8352) pregnancies with expected delivery dates from 1

Ocular involvement in fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: a review.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), the most severe manifestation of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is considered the leading non-hereditary cause of mental retardation and neurological deficit in the Western world. There lie a huge associated human cost to both FASD victims and their families and a considerable financial burden. This problem is being tackled on many fronts including community awareness programs, biomarker development for fetal alcohol exposure, research into preventative treatments and the development of more robust diagnostic systems for the early detection of FASD. Althou

Delay to first treatment contact for alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: This study explored the patterns and correlates of time to first treatment contact among people with alcohol use disorder (AUD) in Australia. Specifically it examined the relationship between sex, birth cohort, onset of AUD symptoms, severity, comorbidity, symptom type and time to first treatment contact (treatment delay) among those with alcohol abuse and dependence in a large population sample. METHODS: Data came from the 2007 Australian National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing (N=8841). A modified version of the World Health Organization's Composite International Diagnost

Peculiar characteristics of portal-hepatic hemodynamics of alcoholic cirrhosis.

Alcohol-related cirrhosis is a consequence of heavy and prolonged drinking. Similarly to patients with cirrhosis of other etiologies, patients with alcoholic cirrhosis develop portal hypertension and the hepatic, splanchnic and systemic hemodynamic alterations that follow. However, in alcoholic cirrhosis, some specific features can be observed. Compared to viral cirrhosis, in alcohol-related cirrhosis sinusoidal pressure is generally higher, hepatic venous pressure gradient reflects portal pressure better, the portal flow perfusing the liver is reduced despite an increase in liver weight, the

Effect of Alcohol Administration on Mg2+ Homeostasis in H9C2 Cells.

Alcoholic cardiomyopathy represents one of the main clinical complications in chronic alcoholics. This pathology contrasts the seemingly beneficial effect of small doses of alcohol on the cardiovascular system. Studies carried out in liver cells exposed acutely or chronically to varying doses of EtOH indicate that intrahepatic alcohol metabolism results in a major loss of cellular Mg2+. To investigate whether EtOH administration also induced Mg2+ extrusion in cardiac cells, H9C2 cells were exposed to varying doses of EtOH for short- or ling-term periods of time. The results indicate that H9C2

A diagnosis of haemolytic-uraemic syndrome blurred by alcohol abuse.

A 60-year-old man with a history of alcohol abuse was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for status epilepticus. At first, laboratory and imagery findings were almost normal, and the symptoms were attributed to severe alcohol withdrawal due to a history of gastroenteritis reported by his family. But, during the following days, haemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopenia, acute renal failure, and ischaemic and haemorrhagic lesions seen on a cerebral CT scan led to the diagnosis of haemolytic-uraemic syndrome (HUS). Despite these severe complications, the patient made a good recovery following I

Prevalence and significance of autoantibodies in patients with alcoholic liver disease.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and significance of serum autoantibodies in alcoholic liver disease (ALD) patients. METHODS: In total, 90 male patients diagnosed with ALD or ALD overlapping with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) were included and their medical records were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical data and laboratory findings were collected. Anti-nuclear antibody (ANA), anti-mitochondrial antibody (AMA) and anti-smooth muscle antibody (SMA) were detected by indirect immunofluorescent assay. RESULTS: Autoantibodies were found in 69.6% (48/69) of patients with ALD and

Interactions between alcohol and the antiretroviral medications ritonavir or efavirenz.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol abuse occurs frequently in those with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Alcohol has been linked to poor response to HIV treatment and more rapid progression of HIV. One possible contributor to such observations is drug interactions between alcohol and antiretroviral (ARV) medications. This study examined drug interactions between antiretroviral therapies (ARTs) containing either efavirenz or ritonavir with alcohol. METHODS: Human immunodeficiency virus-infected individuals not currently receiving ARTs participated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlle

Alcohol, drugs and driving: implications for evaluating driver impairment.

Impaired driving is a significant traffic safety problem, and alcohol and drugs taken before driving contribute substantially to this problem. With the increase in use of prescription medication and the decriminalization of some drugs, it has become increasingly important to understand the manifestation of driver impairment. Building upon previous alcohol research conducted at the National Advanced Driving Simulator (NADS), this study enrolled commercial bus drivers to evaluate the effect of triazolam on driving performance to assess difference between placebo, 0.125, and 0.25 mg doses in a ra

Community indicators: assessing the impact of alcohol use on communities.

Community indicators are used to assess the impact of alcohol on communities. This article reviews the main data sources for community indicators, discusses their strengths and limitations, and discusses indicators used in reference to four main topics relating to alcohol use and problems at the community level: alcohol use, patterns, and problems; alcohol availability; alcohol-related health outcomes/trauma; and alcohol-related crime and enforcement. It also reviews the challenges associated with collecting community indicator data, along with important innovations in the field that have cont

Comorbid Alcohol Dependence and Anxiety Disorders: A National Survey.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to describe onset of comorbid anxiety disorders and alcohol dependence based on a large national survey of the US adult population, and to explore and describe these patterns by gender. METHODS: Using Wave 1 of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) data, we compared age of onset and temporal ordering of onset of comorbid alcohol dependence and anxiety disorders. Analyses were stratified by gender. Mean ages of onset were calculated, and Wald F-tests were used to assess differences in ages of onset, accounting for the

Recurrent severe alcoholic hepatitis: clinical characteristics and outcomes.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Despite high recidivism rates in those treated for alcoholism, recurrent episodes of severe alcoholic hepatitis (SAH) have not been described. Our aim was to assess the clinical characteristics and outcomes in recurrent SAH. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of patient records was carried out. Recurrent SAH was defined as two or more discrete episodes of SAH (discriminant function≥32) coinciding with recidivism in the same patient, with documented improvement/resolution of jaundice during intervening periods of abstinence. RESULTS: Of 56 patients with recidivi
