Age-related differences in patch testing results among children: Analysis of North American Contact Dermatitis Group Data, 2001-2018.

BACKGROUND: An updated understanding of allergic contact dermatitis is needed, particularly in children. OBJECTIVES: To compare positive and clinically relevant reactions in children versus adults referred for patch testing. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 1871 children and 41,699 adults from the North American Contact Dermatitis Group (NACDG) from 2001-2018. RESULTS: Both final diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis (55.2% versus 57.3%; chi square, P = .0716) and prevalence of ≥ 1 currently relevant reaction to a NACDG screening allergen (49.2% vs 52.2%; P = .1178) were similar betwee

Drug-induced liver injury: A management position paper from the Latin American Association for Study of the liver.

Idiosyncratic drug-induced liver injury (DILI) caused by xenobiotics (drugs, herbals and dietary supplements) is an uncommon cause of liver disease presenting with a wide range of phenotypes and disease severity, acute hepatitis mimicking viral hepatitis to autoimmune hepatitis, steatosis, fibrosis or rare chronic vascular syndromes. Disease severity ranges from asymptomatic liver test abnormalities to acute liver failure. DILI has been traditionally classified in predictable or intrinsic (dose-related) or unpredictable (not dose-related) mechanisms. Few prospective studies are assessing the r

The Latin American Association for the Study of the Liver (ALEH) position statement on the redefinition of fatty liver disease.

The Latin American Association for the Study of the Liver (Asociación Latinoamericana para el Estudio del Hígado; ALEH) represents liver professionals in Latin America with the mission of promoting liver health and quality patient care by advancing the science and practice of hepatology and contributing to the development of a regional health policy framework. Fatty liver disease associated with metabolic dysfunction is of specific concern in the ALEH region, where its prevalence is one of the highest globally, second only to the Middle East. A recent consensus from an international panel reco

Contact Allergy in Western Sweden to Propolis of Four Different Origins.

Propolis, which is produced by honeybees and is used in "natural" products, can cause contact allergy. The composition of propolis varies between regions, but little is known about how this variation affects contact allergenicity. The aims of this study were to investigate the frequency of propolis contact allergy in western Sweden, and whether the frequency varies according to the origin of the propolis. Patch-testing was performed using propolis from China, Lithuania, North America, and Sweden in 722 consecutive patients with dermatitis in western Sweden. Frequencies of positive patch-test r

Mobile genetic elements associated with carbapenemase genes in South American Enterobacterales.

INTRODUCTION: Carbapenem resistance in members of order Enterobacterales is a growing public health problem causing high mortality in developing and industrialized countries. Its emergence and rapid propagation worldwide was due to both intercontinental spread of pandemic strains and horizontal dissemination via mobile genetic elements (MGE) such as plasmids and transposons. OBJECTIVE: To describe MGE carrying carbapenem resistance genes in Enterobacterales which have been reported in South America. SEARCH STRATEGY AND SELECTION CRITERIA: A search of the literature in English or Spanish publ

Coexistence of idiopathic intracranial hypertension and optic disc drusen in a latin american patient: case report.

Optic nerve drusen are acellular concretions of calcium located in the parenchyma of the optical nerve head described as the most common cause of pseudo-papilloedema, which makes it difficult to differentiate from a true optical disc oedema. Despite it being rare, the drusen of the optic nerve and the papilloedema secondary to idiopathic intracranial hypertension can coexist in the same patient. The case is presented of a 34 year-old woman referred to the Ophthalmology Department with visual discomfort, headaches, and pulsatile tinnitus of two months onset. In the physical examination there wa

How Structural Violence, Prohibition, and Stigma Have Paralyzed North American Responses to Opioid Overdose.

As of 2020, North America is now into the fifth year of an unprecedented increase in drug overdose deaths driven by a toxic, unpredictable, and unregulated drug supply. While the genesis and drivers of and response to the opioid overdose crisis have wide regional variations, structural violence, prohibitions against illicit drug use, and stigma consistently play a central role. The criminalization of users of illicit drugs has led directly not only to users' incarceration, but also to their marginalization and isolation and to violence, entrenched poverty, and a vicious cycle of trauma. This p

Assessing changes in genomic divergence following a century of human-mediated secondary contact among wild and captive-bred ducks.

Along with manipulating habitat, the direct release of domesticated individuals into the wild is a practice used worldwide to augment wildlife populations. We test between possible outcomes of human-mediated secondary contact using genomic techniques at both historical and contemporary timescales for two iconic duck species. First, we sequence several thousand ddRAD-seq loci for contemporary mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) throughout North America and two domestic mallard types (i.e., known game-farm mallards and feral Khaki Campbell's). We show that North American mallards may well be becoming

Mixture toxicity of copper and nonylphenol on the embryo-larval development of Rhinella arenarum.

Copper and nonylphenol are two commonly found chemicals in the aquatic environment, particularly in the distribution area of the amphibian Rhinella arenarum. The current work evaluated the lethal toxicity of equitoxic and non-equitoxic binary mixtures of copper and nonylphenol on embryos and larvae of the South America toad by means of the standardized test, AMPHITOX. Joint toxicity of mixtures was assessed in several proportions of these compounds at different exposure times and was analyzed at different level of mortality effect (LC10, LC50 and LC90). Considering the LC50, the equitoxic mixt

"Doc, if it were you, what would you do?": a survey of Men's Health specialists' personal preferences regarding treatment modalities.

Men's Health is a urological subspecialty that is at the forefront of innovation, but little data exist evaluating the attitudes that andrologists have toward the current treatment modalities available for managing Men's Health conditions. A survey of 37 questions asking what providers would choose as treatment for common conditions was distributed online via Survey Monkey to members of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America and European Society for Sexual Medicine. A total of 115 respondents completed the survey after an initial screening question. For erectile dysfunction (ED), 40%, 38

Operative Fixation of a Displaced Midshaft Clavicle Fracture.

Midshaft clavicle fractures are frequently encountered orthopaedic injuries. Significant displacement portends a higher likelihood of nonunion and symptomatic malunion after nonoperative treatment. Surgical fixation has been shown to reduce the rate of these adverse outcomes. However, the benefit of surgery is narrowly defined and the decision to offer operative treatment involves a careful analysis of patient clinical factors, expectations, and concomitant injuries. In North America, fixation is most commonly performed with a precontoured plate and screw construct. Frequently, fracture patter

Granulomatous pigmented purpuric dermatosis: report of a Latin-American case with blaschkoid distribution.

Granulomatous pigmented purpuric dermatosis clinically manifests as hyperpigmented maculae and petechiae, predominantly on the lower extremities. Histopathologically, it is characterized by a lymphocytic infiltrate in the upper dermis, extravasated erythrocytes, and hemosiderin deposits. There is an infrequent variant called granulomatous pigmented purpuric dermatosis, which histologically is characterized by the presence of non-necrotizing granulomas associated with the classic findings of other pigmented purpuric dermatoses. It more frequently affects middle-aged women of Asian origin, and p

Prevalence of Babesia spp. and clinical characteristics of Babesia vulpes infections in North American dogs.

BACKGROUND: Babesiosis is an important cause of thrombocytopenia and hemolytic anemia in dogs. Babesia vulpes, reported in European dogs and North American foxes, rarely has been reported in domestic North American dogs. Newly optimized polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers facilitate more sensitive amplification of B. vulpes DNA. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of Babesia sp. infections in dogs being tested for Babesia infection, and to describe co-infections and clinicopathologic abnormalities in B. vulpes positive dogs. ANIMALS: Dog blood or tissue samples (n = 9367) submitted t

Endocranial Morphology of the Extinct North American Lion (Panthera atrox).

The extinct North American lion (Panthera atrox) is one of the largest felids (Mammalia, Carnivora) to have ever lived, and it is known from a plethora of incredibly well-preserved remains. Despite this abundance of material, there has been little research into its endocranial anatomy. CT scans of a skull of P. atrox from the Pleistocene La Brea Tar pits were used to generate the first virtual endocranium for this species and to elucidate previously unknown details of its brain size and gross structure, cranial nerves, and inner-ear morphology. Results show that its gross brain anatomy is broa

Cranial shape variation in jacarean caimanines (Crocodylia, Alligatoroidea) and its implications in the taxonomic status of extinct species: The case of Melanosuchus fisheri.

Melanosuchus niger (Crocodylia, Alligatoroidea) is one of the six living caimanine species widely distributed throughout the Amazon River basin today. Although there is only one extant species of Melanosuchus, fossil material assigned to this genus, represented by M. fisheri, has been reported from the late Miocene in South America. However, the validity of this taxon has been questioned and a recent investigation indicates that the referred specimen of M. fisheri (MCZ 4336) actually belongs to Globidentosuchus brachyrostris, while those diagnostic characters present in the holotype (MCNC 243)

Lutzomyia longipalpis urbanisation and control.

Since the description of Lutzomyia longipalpis by Lutz and Neiva more than 100 years ago, much has been written in the scientific literature about this phlebotomine species. Soares and Turco (2003) and Lainson and Rangel (2005) have written extensive reviews focused on vector-host-parasite interactions and American visceral leishmaniasis ecology. However, during the last two decades, the success of Lu. longipalpis in colonising urban environments and its simultaneous geographical spreading have led to new theoretical and operational questions. Therefore, this review updates the general informa

Perianal North American blastomycosis.

Cutaneous North American blastomycosis most often results from the hematogenous spread of Blastomyces dermatitidis following pulmonary infection. Cutaneous lesions, which may be either verrucous or ulcerative plaques, commonly occur on or around orifices contiguous to the respiratory tract. We report the case of a 57-year-old man with cutaneous North American blastomycosis who presented with a well-demarcated, firm, moist, verrucous perianal plaque 4 months following the onset of a prolonged upper respiratory tract infection. Dissemination of B dermatitidis to the perianal skin is rare, but No
