Expanding the Genotypic and Phenotypic Spectrum of Li-Campeau Syndrome: A Homozygous Single-Exon Deletion in UBR7.

Biallelic pathogenic variants in UBR7, encoding ubiquitin protein ligase E3 component n-recognin 7, cause Li-Campeau syndrome (LICAS; OMIM #619189), which is characterized by developmental delay/intellectual disability, epilepsy, hypothyroidism, ptosis, genital anomalies, and cardiac anomalies. LICAS is an ultrarare disorder, and to date, only nine patients from eight unrelated families have been reported with detailed clinical phenotypes. Here, we report an 18-year-old female patient with dysmorphic facial features, ptosis, congenital hypothyroidism, intellectual disability, stereotypic hand

Juvenile firesetting in Turkey: Psychiatric and motivational profiles, and associations with recurrence and forensic outcomes.

Juvenile firesetting remains underexamined in non-Western forensic populations. This study investigated the psychiatric, motivational, and familial characteristics of 55 adolescents (mean age = 15.05 years; 92.7% male) referred for court-ordered forensic psychiatric assessment in Turkey between 2019 and 2025. Structured coding captured motivational subtypes, family adversity, psychiatric diagnoses, co-occurring offending, and incident characteristics. Motivations included antisocial/criminal, anger- or revenge-driven, impulsive, curiosity-related, and distress-linked acts. Family adversity-par

Assessment and treatment of adolescent hair loss.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hair loss in adolescents carries significant psychosocial impact, and it is often underrecognized and managed without adolescent-specific approaches. This review describes recent advances in diagnostics, pathophysiology, and therapies to improve diagnosis and management of adolescent alopecia. RECENT FINDINGS: Trichoscopy and ultraviolet-enhanced follicular dermoscopy improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce invasive testing. Androgenetic alopecia is linked to obesity and genetic predisposition; topical minoxidil remains first-line with low-dose oral minoxidil use supported i

Multisensory integration and child neurodevelopment.

A considerable number of cognitive processes depend on the integration of multisensory information. The brain integrates this information, providing a complete representation of our surrounding world and giving us the ability to react optimally to the environment. Infancy is a period of great changes in brain structure and function that are reflected by the increase of processing capacities of the developing child. However, it is unclear if the optimal use of multisensory information is present early in childhood or develops only later, with experience. The first part of this review has focuse

Lateral asymmetry and reduced forward masking effect in early brainstem auditory evoked responses in schizophrenia.

Individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia show deficiencies of basic neurophysiological sorting mechanisms. This study further investigated this issue, focusing on the two phenomena, laterality of coding and auditory forward masking. A specific audiometric method for use in psychiatry was the measuring set up to register brain stem audiograms (ABRs). A sample of 49 schizophrenic patients was compared with three control groups consisting of healthy reference subjects (n=49), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) patients (n=29), Asperger syndrome (AS) patients (n=13) and drug-induced p

Febrile Seizures and Subsequent Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study.

Objectives: To access the effects of febrile seizures from coexisting neurodevelopmental conditions that are commonly associated with autism spectrum disorder. We examined whether febrile seizures are independently associated with ASD after considering neurodevelopmental comorbidities and seizure-related clinical characteristics. Methods: We conducted a nationwide population-based matched cohort study using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. The study included 948 children with FS and 3804 age- and sex-matched controls without FS. Participants were followed longitudinally fo

Response inhibition and interference control in obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders.

Over the past 20 years, motor response inhibition and interference control have received considerable scientific effort and attention, due to their important role in behavior and the development of neuropsychiatric disorders. Results of neuroimaging studies indicate that motor response inhibition and interference control are dependent on cortical-striatal-thalamic-cortical (CSTC) circuits. Structural and functional abnormalities within the CSTC circuits have been reported for many neuropsychiatric disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and related disorders, such as attention

Meta-analysis of brain-derived neurotrophic factor p.Val66Met in adult ADHD in four European populations.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a multifactorial, neurodevelopmental disorder that often persists into adolescence and adulthood and is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. Before the advent of the first genome-wide association studies in ADHD, genetic research had mainly focused on candidate genes related to the dopaminergic and serotoninergic systems, although several other genes had also been assessed. Pharmacological data, analysis of animal models and association studies suggest that Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is also a strong can

An open-label study evaluating the safety, behavioral, and electrophysiological outcomes of low-dose ketamine in children with ADNP syndrome.

Activity-dependent neuroprotective protein (ADNP) syndrome is a rare genetic condition associated with intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder. Preclinical evidence suggests that low-dose ketamine may induce expression of ADNP and that neuroprotective effects of ketamine may be mediated by ADNP. The goal of the proposed research was to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and behavioral outcomes of low-dose ketamine in children with ADNP syndrome. We also sought to explore the feasibility of using electrophysiological markers of auditory steady-state response and computerized eye tr

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum as a promising adjuvant for neurological disorders therapy through the brain-gut axis and related action pathways.

Dysbiosis in neurological disorders has highlighted the gut-microbiota-brain axis and psychobiotics and their ability to act on the brain-gut axis. Studying and discovering new approaches in therapies for neuropsychiatric disorders are strategies that have been discussed and put into practice. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum is a lactic acid bacteria species with an extensive history of safe use whose action as a psychobiotic has been successfully explored. This review describes and discusses the mechanisms of action of L. plantarum and its potential for the prevention and treatment of neurologi

Optimal Items for Assessing Sluggish Cognitive Tempo in Children Across Mother, Father, and Teacher Ratings.

A recent meta-analysis identified optimal items for assessing sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) as distinct from attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder inattention (ADHD-IN), and a preliminary study with teacher ratings of children in the United States found strong support for the convergent and discriminant validity of 15 SCT items. The current study evaluated whether the same 15 SCT items demonstrated convergent and discriminant validity from ADHD-IN in a large, community-based sample of children in Spain, and whether validity results were replicated across mother, father, and teacher ratings

Impulsivity in adult ADHD patients with and without cocaine dependence.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is present in about a quarter of patients with a substance use disorder (SUD) and impulsivity is a key feature of both disorders. However, very little is known about differences in impulse control and other cognitive functions between ADHD patients with and without SUD. METHODS: In adult male medication-naïve ADHD patients with and without comorbid cocaine dependence and healthy controls (matched on gender, age and IQ), we measured motor impulsivity (stop signal task), cognitive impulsivity (delay discounting task), divided attention

Psychiatric predictors of first-onset suicidal thoughts and behaviors throughout preadolescence: longitudinal associations in a US population-based study.

Rates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors are increasing among preadolescent children, yet there is a paucity of longitudinal research among this developmental group. This study evaluated prospective associations between current and lifetime psychiatric disorders and first-onset suicidal ideation (SI), first-onset suicide attempts (SA), and the transition from SI to SA over the course of preadolescence, and estimated the prevalence of psychiatric treatment utilization among preadolescents with SI and SA. Data were drawn from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study. Preadolescents ages

Autism diagnoses in school-age children in southern Trøndelag 2016-2019.

BACKGROUND: We have previously reported a significantly higher prevalence of autism spectrum disorders in southern Trøndelag among preschool children with mothers from a different national background than Norway. In this study, we wanted to investigate whether, in the same period and in the same geographic area, there was also an excess prevalence among school-age children. Additionally, we wanted to identify psychiatric and developmental comorbidities. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We carried out a retrospective review of the medical records of children between 10 and 16 years of age who had been dia

Mental disorders in referred 0-3-year-old children: a population-based study of incidence, comorbidity and perinatal risk factors.

The epidemiology of mental disorders in early childhood is still under-researched. We aim to explore the incidence, comorbidities and risk factors of mental disorders in 0-3-year-olds referred to hospital settings. In a national cohort of 918,280 children born in 1997-2010, we calculated incidence rates per 1,000 person-years (IR) of first-time mental and developmental disorders diagnosed in hospitals before four years of age. Data were obtained from Danish population registries. We used logistic regression to analyse co-morbidity and Cox proportional hazard models to evaluate the influence of

The Impact of Emotional Lability Symptoms During Childhood in Adults With ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether emotional lability (EL) in adult ADHD patients can already be identified during their childhood and the extent to which this childhood symptomatology can predict EL in adulthood. METHOD: Seven hundred eighteen adults with ADHD were examined. EL in adulthood was assessed using the Conners' Adult ADHD Rating Scales (CAARS). According to Conners' definition of EL, seven items from the Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS) were used to determine this symptomatology in childhood. RESULTS: EL was identified in 31.1% of the participants, and 29.6% of this subgroup reported

Psychopathic-like traits in detained adolescents: clinical usefulness of self-report.

Studies have demonstrated that self-report tools can be used to reliably and validly examine psychopathic-like traits in adolescents. However, it is unclear if self-report instruments are still reliable and valid when confidentiality cannot be guaranteed, such as during routine assessments in juvenile detention centres. To address this issue, the current study used data from the routine mental health screening of 365 detained male adolescents (12-18 years) in two juvenile detention centres. With the intention of gaining insight in the clinical usefulness of self-reported psychopathic-like trai

Evidence for overlapping genetic influences on autistic and ADHD behaviours in a community twin sample.

BACKGROUND: High levels of clinical comorbidity have been reported between autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study takes an individual differences approach to determine the degree of phenotypic and aetiological overlap between autistic traits and ADHD behaviours in the general population. METHODS: The Twins Early Development Study is a community sample born in England and Wales. Families with twins born in 1994-6 were invited to join; 6,771 families participated in the study when the twins were 8 years old. Parents completed the Childh
