A cytotoxic effect of peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 22 out of 23 newly diagnosed Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetic patients against B cells of isolated rat islets was demonstrated. The addition of peripheral blood mononuclear cells from healthy subjects reduced the cytotoxic effect in 9 out of 10 patients. In view of epidemiologic aspects of AIDS we studied the immunological side-effects of oral hormonal contraceptives and the barbiturates--which are used by many people in Hungary. A murine monoclonal antibody (designated R4/23) which reacts strongly with human dendritic reticulum cells (DRC) is described. In alcoholic cirrhosis, high levels of serum IgA make a prominent contribution to hyperglobulinaemia. Kinetic studies indicate that this predominantly reflects enhanced IgA synthesis rather than catabolism.
