Effect of electrical charges and fields on injury and viability of airborne bacteria.

In this study, the effects of the electric charges and fields on the viability of airborne microorganisms were investigated. The electric charges of different magnitude and polarity were imparted on airborne microbial cells by a means of induction charging. The airborne microorganisms carrying different electric charge levels were then extracted by an electric mobility analyzer and collected using a microbial sampler. It was found that the viability of Pseudomonas fluorescens bacteria, used as a model for sensitive bacteria, carrying a net charge from 4100 negative to 30 positive elementary ch

The agent of bacillary angiomatosis. An approach to the identification of uncultured pathogens.

BACKGROUND: Bacillary angiomatosis is an infectious disease causing proliferation of small blood vessels in the skin and visceral organs of patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection and other immunocompromised hosts. The agent is often visualized in tissue sections of lesions with Warthin-Starry staining, but the bacillus has not been successfully cultured or identified. This bacillus may also cause cat scratch disease. METHODS: In attempting to identify this organism, we used the polymerase chain reaction. We used oligonucleotide primers complementary to the 16S ribosomal RNA gene

[Experimental study of an aerosol preparation containing gentamicin (gentasol)].

Composition of a suspension aerosol drug, gentasol for local application was developed. It contained gentamycin and prednisolon. The antimicrobial properties of the drug were studied in vitro. It was found that gentasol had a pronounced antimicrobiol effect and inhibited the growth of many microorganisms including cultures resistant to other antibiotics. The drug was active against Ps. aeruginosa and Proteus, which is an advantage of it as compared to other antibiotic aerosol drugs. The study showed that gentasol had self-sterilizing properties.

[Not Available].

Intravesical instillation of bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is used for the maintenance treatment of some types of bladder cancer. Although rare, ocular complications can develop following intravesical BCG treatment. This is a case report of culture-positive Mycobacterium bovis BCG endophthalmitis following intravesical BCG installation. The case highlights a rare complication of BCG installation and the need for an eye examination when patients after BCG installation develop eye symptoms.

A Case of Intra-abdominal abscess due to Sphingomonas paucimobilis in a patient on Peritoneal dialysis: A case report and review of literature.

Sphingomonas paucimobilis is an aerobic gram-negative bacillus, widely distributed in the water and soil. It has also been found in nosocomial environments causing nosocomial infections. S. paucimobilis is a rare cause of peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related peritonitis. Here, we report the 14th case, with a literature review. Our case is unique as this is the first reported case of intra-abdominal abscess associated with S. paucimobilis PD-related peritonitis.

Chromone derivatives, R- and S- taeniolin, from the marine-derived fungus Taeniolella sp. BCC31839.

Two unknown enantiomeric compounds, named (R)- and (S)-taeniolin, along with six known compounds, were isolated from the marine-associated fungus Taeniolella sp. BCC31839. Chemical structures were determined by NMR spectroscopic techniques, and the absolute configurations were confirmed by Mosher application together with CD spectral analyses. Both were inactive for antimicrobial activity against multidrug-resistant malaria parasite (Plasmodium falciparum) and bacteria (Mycobacerium tuberculosis and Bacillus cereus) at maximum tested concentration.

Successful Handling of Disseminated BCG Disease in a Child with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency.

In high-burden countries, Mycobacterium bovis Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine is administered in newborn to prevent severe Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. Because life-threatening disseminated BCG disease may occur in children with primary immunodeficiency, vaccination strategy against tuberculosis should be redefined in non-high-burden countries. We report the case of a patient with X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) who developed disseminated BCG disease, highlighting the specific strategies adopted.

[Intravesical treatment of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer].

Depending on the risk status, the treatment options for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) can include a bladder-preserving strategy with intravesical instillation treatment or early radical cystectomy. Established intravesical treatment options such as mitomycin C (MMC) or Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) are available to reduce the probability of progression and recurrence. This article classifies the intravesical treatment options in the therapeutic landscape of NMIBC and provides an overview of the indications and application regimens.

Testis sparing management of tuberculous epididymitis - Case report.

Tuberculous epididymitis is uncommonly encountered and is a very rare complication of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) intravesical therapy for the treatment of bladder urothelial cancer. With the increased use of BCG, it is conceivable that practicing urologists will see more patients presenting with this infection. Herein, we describe an unusual presentation of tuberculous epididymitis treated successfully in a conservative fashion with anti-tuberculotic medications and describe current diagnostic, as well as medical and surgical management strategies.

Blood Stream Infection by Escherchia hermannii in a Neonate.

Escherichia hermannii is a Gram negative bacillus, facultative anaerobe and member of the family Enterobacteriaceae. It was earlier classified as Enteric Group 11 by the Enteric Section of Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and was reported in the clinical laboratory as a yellow pigmented E. coli strain. On the basis of its unique genomic features, this organism was labelled as a distinct species in 1982. A successfully treated case of a blood stream infection by E. hermannii in a neonate is being described.

Severe cystic periventricular leukomalacia in a premature infant with capnocytophaga sepsis.

Capnocytophaga is an opportunistic gram-negative anaerobic bacillus found in the oropharyngeal cavity of mammals and is associated with periodontal disease in humans. Sepsis, osteomyelitis, lung abscess, endocarditis, and meningitis have been reported in humans following animal bites. Perinatal infection with Capnocytophaga is infrequent and is generally considered to have a low risk of morbidity to the mother and fetus. We report a case of neonatal Capnocytophaga sepsis associated with the development of severe cystic periventricular leukomalacia.

Melioidosis of salivary glands with coexisting diabetes: management of a difficult case.

Melioidosis is an infectious disease caused by the gram-negative bacillus Burkholderia pseudomallei. Melioidosis is endemic in Southeast Asia and northern Australia. An important risk factor for the development of melioidosis is the presence of diabetes mellitus, which may increase the relative risk of infection by as much as 100-fold. We report a rare case of melioidosis of the parotid and submandibular gland with coexisting diabetes. This was successfully managed conservatively with intravenous ceftazidime followed by trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole and doxycycline.

Information on which to base assessments of risk from environments contaminated with anthrax spores.

Although there has been a considerable amount of research conducted into Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent of anthrax, the data are widely disseminated in the scientific literature and are therefore not always easy to assimilate. In view of continuing concern about potential anthrax contamination in environmental materials and sites, this review brings together the currently available information relating to the health hazards from B. anthracis. The relevance of the available information for risk assessment purposes is assessed.

[Children typhoid fever in Saigon (Vietnam) : epidemiological and biological aspects (author's transl)].

A review of 130 children cases of typhoid fever in Saigon (Vietnam). Leuco-neutropenia is far from regular but thrombopenia is frequent. The typhoid bacillus is generally cultivated from blood during the first two weeks of the evolution. There is evidence in most S. typhi strains of a plasmid resistance for streptomycine, chloramphenicol, tetracycline and sulfamides. Strains of the various other enterobacteria of the intestinal flora are generally resistant for many more antibiotics than S. typhi.

Sphingomonas paucimobilis Bacteremia in a Preterm Neonate: A Rare Cause of Early-Onset Sepsis.

Sphingomonas paucimobilis (S. paucimobilis), an environmental Gram-negative bacillus, is a rare cause of clinical infections in neonates. This case report describes a preterm neonate with early-onset sepsis (EOS) caused by S. paucimobilis. Identification was achieved using the VITEK 2 system, and targeted antimicrobial therapy with meropenem, vancomycin, and metronidazole resulted in clinical improvement. Early recognition and microbiological diagnosis are essential for managing unusual pathogens in neonatal intensive care settings.

Chryseobacterium indologenes sepsis in a pediatric patient.

Chryseobacterium indologenes is a Gram-negative aerobic bacillus commonly found in nosocomial environments, particularly in patients with prolonged hospital stays or those requiring long-term invasive devices. It primarily affects elderly and immunocompromised individuals. This microorganism is associated with multidrug resistance, which is a crucial factor in treatment decisions. Here, we report a case of C. indologenes infection in an infant following the ingestion of milk formula diluted with untreated water.

Two cases with bacteremia suspected to be due to relatively rare Pseudomonas (Flavimonas) oryzihabitans.

Pseudomonas oryzihabitans (formerly Flavimonas oryzihabitans) is a glucose non-fermentative, Gram-negative bacillus which is rarely isolated from human specimens. When isolated, it is on very rare occasion as a causative pathogen of catheter-related bloodstream infection in an immunocompromised patient. Herein, we describe two hematological malignancy patients suspected to have P. oryzihabitans bacteremia. We also review cases with bacteremia due to this pathogen and its microbiological characteristics.
