The use of implants to provide glenohumeral soft tissue fixation has changed dramatically over the past few decades, from point tack fixation to metallic suture anchors to bioabsorbable suture anchors. Bioabsorbable suture anchors have largely replaced metallic anchors because of concerns of implant loosening, migration, and chondral injury. Although the safety and efficacy of bioabsorbable anchors has been well documented, there are numerous reports regarding the early failure related to implant bioabsorbable implant breakage or premature degradation. Patients with anchor-related complication

Catalysis is a fundamental principle of biological systems, yet synthetic biomaterials seldom incorporate catalytic activity as a core design principle. Here, we introduce a polymeric network constructed by crosslinking imidazole-functionalized polymers using Cu2+ ions, yielding an elastomer with enzyme-mimetic reactivity. This bioinspired design enables sustained nitric oxide (NO) generation in serum and broad-spectrum antioxidant activity against superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl radicals, mimicking the functions of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidases. Catalytic activit

Four-dimensional (4D) printing integrates additive manufacturing with stimuli-responsive materials to fabricate biomedical implants and functional healthcare devices that undergo programmed, time-dependent changes in shape or function. Unlike static 3D-printed constructs, 4D-printed systems can respond to clinically relevant stimuli such as temperature, hydration, pH, light (including near-infrared), magnetic fields, or electrical inputs. These triggers drive defined actuation mechanisms, most commonly thermomechanical shape-memory recovery, swelling-induced morphing, and magnetothermal activa

The rapid development of functional materials and manufacturing technologies is fostering advances in piezoelectric materials (PEMs). PEMs can convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. Unlike traditional power sources, which need to be replaced and are inconvenient to carry, PEMs have extensive potential applications in smart wearable and implantable devices. However, the application of conventional PEMs is limited by their poor flexibility, low ductility, and susceptibility to fatigue failure. Incorporating hydrogels, which are flexible, stretchable, and self-healing, providing a way

Bone defects and dysfunctions are prevalent among patients, resulting from various causes such as trauma, tumors, congenital malformations, inflammation, and infection. The demand for bone defect repair materials is second only to blood transfusions. Artificial bone composites offer numerous advantages for bone damage repair, including their availability, absence of rejection or immune reactions, high malleability, exceptional mechanical strength, and outstanding biocompatibility. However, bacterial infections frequently occur during bone transplantation or on graft material structures, leadin

Due to its favorable chemical stability, biocompatibility, and mechanical properties, Poly(etheretherketone) (PEEK) is a promising material for repairing bone and dental hard tissue defects. However, there are critical disadvantages: PEEK is biologically and chemically inert, which influences osseointegration of implants and bonding strength of prostheses, and its mechanical properties still cannot meet the requirements for some medical applications. Furthermore, bacterial infections and inflammatory reactions often accompany bone defects caused by trauma or inflammation or teeth loss caused b

Population aging and the development of transcatheter aortic valve replacement boost the implantation of bioprosthetic heart valves (BHVs) in patients worldwide. However, the traditional glutaraldehyde cross-linked BHVs fail within 12-15 years mainly due to leaflet tear and calcification defects. In this study, a novel visible light-induced cross-linking of the porcine pericardium (PP) was realized by the photo-oxidation of the furfuryl-modified PP in the presence of Rose Bengal. The resulting material showed comparable collagen stability with the glutaraldehyde cross-linked PP and appropriate

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a ubiquitous material used for implants and medical devices in general because of its high biocompatibility and inertness: blood vessel, heart, table jawbone, nose, eyes, or abdominal wall can benefit from its properties in case of disease or injury. Its expanded version, ePTFE is an improved version of PTFE with better mechanical properties, which extends its medical applications. A material as frequently used as ePTFE with these exceptional properties deserves a review of its main uses, developments, and possibility of improvements. In this systematic review

INTRODUCTION: Over the past 15 years, resorbable materials have been successfully used for osteosynthesis, but their high cost prevents widespread application. However, the use of resorbable systems could be a method of choice, especially in treatment of children in the active growth period. Obviously, biodegradable materials not only are highly competitive with known metal constructs in terms of fixation rigidity, biocompatibility, and a low risk of infection but also have an undeniable advantage, such as gradual resorption allowing quick return of damaged bones to the physiological condition
