Body composition and time course changes in regional distribution of fat and lean tissue in unselected cancer patients on palliative care--correlations with food intake, metabolism, exercise capacity, and hormones.

BACKGROUND: Several investigations that yielded different results in terms of net changes in body composition of weight-losing cancer patients have been reported that employed a variety of methods based on fundamentally different technology. Most of those reports were cross-sectional, whereas to the authors' knowledge there is sparse information available on longitudinal follow-up measurements in relation to other independent methods for the assessment of metabolism and performance. METHODS: For the current report, the authors evaluated time course changes in body composition (dual-energy X-r

Monitoring CO2 in shock states.

The primary end point when treating acute shock is to restore blood circulation, mainly by reaching macrocirculatory parameters. However, even if global haemodynamic goals can be achieved, microcirculatory perfusion may remain impaired, leading to cellular hypoxia and organ damage. Interestingly, few methods are currently available to measure the adequacy of organ blood flow and tissue oxygenation. The rise in tissue partial pressure of carbon dioxide (CO2) has been observed when tissue perfusion is decreased. In this regard, tissue partial pressure of CO2 has been proposed as an early and rel

Bispectral index reveals death-feigning behavior in a red kite (Milvus milvus).

Red kites (Milvus milvus) are birds of prey known to feign death in the presence of humans. An adult wild red kite was anesthetized with isoflurane for coelioscopy. During surgery, heart rate and respiratory rate ranged from 240 to 260 beats per minute and from 16 to 28 breaths rates per minute, respectively. Pupil and corneal reflexes remained present, and body temperature was maintained at 40.4 degrees C (104.7 degrees F). Suppression ratio was 0 during the anesthetic episode. The bispectral index was 44 immediately after intubation, ranged from 44 to 57 during maintenance of anesthesia, and

Medullary thyroid carcinoma relapse reversed with dichloroacetate: A case report.

A 51-year-old male patient diagnosed with medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) in 2001, with progression to lung metastases following adriamycin therapy, was then successfully treated with dimethyltriazenoimidazole carboximide. He remained in partial remission for 7 years following numerous chemotherapy attempts to induce partial remission. In October 2008, the patient, then 58 years old, relapsed with numerous tumors throughout his central body. On December 1, 2008, the tumor marker for MTC, calcitonin, was at 38,611 pg/ml, i.e., much higher than the norm of <20 pg/ml. Since all other chemothera

TyG-ABSI and TyG-WWI as insulin-resistance body shape markers of mortality in middle-aged and older adults within the cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic framework: A multi-cohort observational study with external survival-model validation.

Insulin resistance, adiposity, kidney dysfunction, and cardiovascular disease are closely interconnected in middle-aged and older adults and are central to the cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) framework. Triglyceride-glucose (TyG)-related indices combine routine lipid, glucose, and anthropometric information, but their cross-population consistency and incremental prognostic value for mortality-risk assessment remain uncertain. We analyzed harmonized participant-level data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), China Hea

The Impact of Microplastics on Human Health: An Urgent Public Health Concern.

Microplastics (MPs) have rapidly become one of the most pervasive pollutants in the modern world. Far from being confined to oceans or waste sites, these tiny particles now circulate through the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. As everyday plastic items break down over time, they form microscopic fragments that can travel long distances and enter the human body through inhalation or ingestion. Once inside the body, these particles may accumulate in organs and interact with biological systems in ways that scientists are only beginning to understand. This review synthesiz

Impaired Phase Separation of the XY Body Underlies Spermatogenic Failure in a Translocation Carrying Mice.

Although balanced chromosomal translocations in humans are generally regarded as clinically benign, some male carriers exhibit infertility, such as azoospermia or oligozoospermia. Previous studies using mouse models have suggested that impaired sex chromosome inactivation during meiotic prophase I may contribute to infertility, but the precise mechanisms underlying variable fertility outcomes among male carriers remain unclear. In this study, we investigated male meiosis in the T6/T6 strain, a model carrying a homozygous reciprocal translocation. T6/wt males exhibited variable fertility-rangin

Dynamics of Neural Adjustments During Progressive Transitions to Unweighted and Reloaded Running.

The lower body positive pressure treadmill (LBPPT) enables running at different percentages of body weight. This study investigated how neural adjustments unfold during progressive transitions to unweighted and reloaded running, and assessed the repeatability of their dynamics across two successive exposures. Thirty-eight men completed two runs (RUN1, RUN2) on a LBPPT. Each run comprised three stable phases at 100%, 60%, and 100% body weight (3 × 3 min), separated by progressive unweighting and reloading transitions (UNWtr and RLDtr; 12 ± 2 s). Surface electromyographic (EMG) activity of 11 lo

Analysis of the effect of disc degeneration on dynamic characteristics of the lumbar spine using a whole-human body finite element model.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of L4-L5 disc degeneration and different loading frequencies on the dynamic response of the lumbar spine under whole-body vibration. A healthy and a degenerative whole-human body finite element model were developed, with the degenerative model constructed by changing disc height and nucleus pulposus material properties. Both models, coupled with the same seat, underwent 9.8 m/s2 gravitational acceleration and vertical sinusoidal displacement loads (±5 mm) at 3, 5, and 7 Hz. With disc degeneration, the maximum value and vibration amplitude of nucleus

AI-driven body composition atlas reveals its association with NSCLC immunotherapy outcome and molecular background: a multicenter study.

Although previous studies have linked body composition to immunotherapy efficacy, comprehensive multidimensional analyses with biological explanations remain lacking. This study integrated eight independent cohorts comprising 2,132 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, including five immune checkpoint inhibitor prognostic cohorts (n = 1,919), two bulk RNA-seq cohorts (n = 190), and one prospective single-cell RNA-seq cohort (n = 23). Using deep learning algorithms, we automatically extracted 92 body composition parameters from computed tomography images. The AI-based segmentation system

Assessing the causal influence of biomechanical factors on osteoporosis risk: A multivariable Mendelian randomization investigation.

While observational studies indicate correlations between multiple biomechanical traits and osteoporosis, causal inference has been constrained, impeding the clinical application of these measures in risk stratification. This Mendelian randomization (MR) study examines causal associations of ankle spacing width (ASW), height, body mass index (BMI), grip strength, and usual walking pace with bone mineral density (BMD) across skeletal sites and age groups. Genetic proxies for the exposures were derived from the Medical Research Council Integrative Epidemiology Unit and UK Biobank resources. Gene

Fall history does not affect predictive control of dynamic balance during unilateral load carriage in older adults.

We investigated the effects of progressive unilateral hand load carriage on the predictive control of dynamic balance during walking in older adults with and without a recent history of falls. Thirty-one community-dwelling older adults (15 fallers, 16 non-fallers) walked at their preferred speed under six randomized conditions: no load and carrying unilateral dumbbell loads corresponding to 2-10% of body mass. Whole-body kinematics and bilateral gluteus medius electromyography were recorded. Mediolateral margin of stability (MoS) was computed using the extrapolated center of mass, both with an

Can Category-selective Cortex Predict Categorization Behavior?

One of the distinctive features of the human visual system is the presence in occipito-temporal cortex (OTC) of regions that show preferential activation to specific categories of visual objects. To understand how this selectivity relates to categorization behavior, studies have employed a distance-to-bound (DTB) approach, where multivariate brain activity is used to estimate a decision boundary, from which behavioral performance can be predicted. Using this approach, correlations have been found between activity in OTC and behavioral performance when carrying out certain categorization tasks.

Using a Biomarker of Biological Aging to Predict Incident Cardiometabolic Disease.

BACKGROUND: The ability to predict cardiometabolic risk is essential to support efforts to prevent future onset of disease. Biomarkers that assess biological aging-the rate of decline in physiological functioning that occurs across the systems of the human body-have the potential to support this goal. METHODS: We investigated the extent to which Dunedin Pace of Aging Calculated From the Epigenome (DunedinPACE), an epigenetic measure of biological aging, predicted cardiometabolic disease onset in a cohort of 2062 US military veterans free of disease at baseline and followed for an average of 1

Radiographic Assessment of Spinal Degeneration in Vervet Monkeys (Chlorocebus aethiops): Prevalence, Patterns, and Relevance to Primate Aging Models.

Degenerative changes of the vertebral column are common in aging primates; however, patterns of spinal osteopathy remain poorly characterized across small- and medium-bodied primate species, limiting comparative interpretations of skeletal aging. Expanding assessments beyond well-studied taxa provides a broader framework for understanding primate musculoskeletal senescence and generates baseline data essential for interpreting vertebral degeneration in wild and semi-free-ranging populations, where ecological and life-history factors influence skeletal aging. We investigated age-, sex-, and bod
