Signal processing in brainstem auditory neurons which receive giant endings (calyces of Held) in the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body of the cat.

In the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB), each principal neuron receives one large axonal ending (a calyx of Held) and many small endings. In this same region, microelectrode recordings show unusual 'unit' waveforms which have two components separated by about 0.5 ms. We show that the first component (C1) of such a waveform corresponds to a spike from the calyx of Held and that the second component (C2) corresponds to a spike from the MNTB principal neuron. There are two kinds of evidence for these correspondences. First, electrical stimulation of calyciferous axons in the contralate

[Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy associated with leukopenia of unknown (iatrogenic?) origin].

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy is a virtually always opportunistic infection of central nervous system caused by papova viruses, which clinically presents with symptoms and signs of involvement of different encephalic levels. We report a case with a double interest: on the one hand, both clinical features and lesions were limited to the brainstem and cerebellum; on the other hand, the disease developed in a previously healthy female in whom laboratory evidence of immunodeficiency of unknown origin was demonstrated. A reason for immunodeficiency was also not found at autopsy, being

Blink reflex studies in focal dystonias: enhanced excitability of brainstem interneurons in cranial dystonia and spasmodic torticollis.

We have studied the orbicularis oculi reflex to paired stimuli in patients with various forms of focal dystonia and in normal controls. In normals, the conditioning stimulus (CS) facilitated the test stimulus (TS) early response (R1), but markedly inhibited the TS polysynaptic late response (R2). In all types of dystonias studied the CS facilitated the TSR1 as in normals. However, in patients with blepharospasm (alone or associated with oromandibular dystonia), spasmodic torticollis, or spasmodic dysphonia, it inhibited the TSR2 significantly less than that of the controls, with marked enhance

[Effects of thiopental on sensory evoked potentials in the cat].

Noninvasive electrophysiological evaluation with sensory evoked potentials would be of clear diagnostic and prognostic value in evaluating comatose patients with stroke or severe head injury. In order to protect the brain from such kinds of insults, barbiturate coma therapy has been employed and its effectiveness has been already established. However, in the barbiturate coma therapy, it is occasionally difficult to distinguish the pharmacological effect of barbiturate from the preexisting brain dysfunction caused by the underlying process of the disease. In adult cats, authors studied changes

Distribution of accessory and hypoglossal nerves in the hindbrain and spinal cord of lungless salamanders, family Plethodontidae.

Study of the innervation of the musculature related to feeding behavior in plethodontid salamanders by means of the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) technique has demonstrated the existence of a true spinal accessory nerve which innervates neck musculature, enters the brain via the ganglion of IX/X cranial nerves and has its motor neurons within the nucleus of the second spinal nerve. Further, it has been shown that the first spinal nerve, being strictly motor, alone constitutes the ramus hypoglossus and is, therefore, homologous to the hypoglossus of amniotes.

Neuropathology in seven cases of locked-in syndrome.

The neuropathology of 7 cases of the locked-in syndrome has been reviewed and compared with 3 cases of akinetic mutism, all of them occurring after brainstem vascular disease (9 infarctions, 1 hematoma). Including other published cases of verified locked-in syndrome, the extent of lesions has been studied in order to understand, among other symptoms, the preservation of consciousness, voluntary eye movements, auditory comprehension and vital functions. It is concluded that, at the time of autopsy, although most of the clinical signs can be explained by the pathological findings, it is not yet

A physiological study of acoustic blinking reflex in the cat.

Blinking reflex was elicited by acoustic stimulus to investigate the reflex pathway in the encéphalo isolé cat. Reflex responses were recorded using electromyography (EMG) of the orbicularis oculi. The investigation was as follows: After stimulation by a loud click sound, the EMGs of the orbicularis oculi were elicited bilaterally. Latencies were 17-20 msec on the ipsilateral side, and 19-21 msec on the contralateral side. By electrical stimulation of the peripheral nerve in the cochlea and the acoustic nerve EMGs were also obtained. The latencies of the electrical stimulation responses correl

[Bulbar infarcts. Vascular lesions in 26 observations].

The pattern of arterial occlusion and related lesions have been studied in 26 cases with 38 medullary infarcts. In 10 of these cases, only the intracranial vessels were examined. In the 16 other cases, the entire cerebral arterial supply was dissected. Medial infarcts were more often related to occlusion of the vertebral artery involving the termination of the artery (7/10 cases). In 6 cases a thrombosis on an atheromatous plaque and, once, an embolus of cardiac origin, were found. Lateral infarcts were usually due either to occlusion of the vertebral artery (14/23 cases), reaching, in 10 case

Dental pulp stem cells regenerate neural tissue in degenerative disorders and stroke rehabilitation: A scope systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Dental Pulp Stem Cells (DPSCs) possess a remarkable ability for tissue differentiation, making them highly efficient in tissue regeneration and inflammation regulation. This systematic study proposes to find an answer to the question, "Do DPSCs have the ability to regenerate and rehabilitate nerve tissue?" METHODS: This systematic review was conducted based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) criteria, and the principle of non-bias was respected. All the articles from 2014 to 2024 were extracted from the Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus

Longitudinal multi-omics reveals pathogenic TSC2 variants disrupt developmental trajectories of human cortical organoids derived from Tuberous Sclerosis Complex.

Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), an autosomal dominant condition, is caused by heterozygous mutations in either the TSC1 or TSC2 genes, manifesting in systemic growth of benign tumors. In addition to brain lesions, neurologic sequelae represent the greatest morbidity in TSC patients. Investigations utilizing TSC1/2-knockout animal or human stem cell models suggest that TSC deficiency-causing hyper-activation of mTOR signaling might precipitate anomalous neurodevelopmental processes. However, how the pathogenic variants of TSC1/2 genes affect the longitudinal trajectory of human brain developm

Association of pretreatment pontine infarction with extremely poor outcome after endovascular thrombectomy in acute basilar artery occlusion.

BACKGROUND: The association between pretreatment brain stem infarction and thrombectomy outcomes remains to be elucidated in patients with acute basilar artery occlusion (BAO). We aimed to assess the association between pretreatment pontine infarction and extremely poor outcome in patients who underwent endovascular thrombectomy due to acute BAO. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data from a stroke database to identify patients with acute BAO who underwent thrombectomy between January 2011 and August 2019. Patient characteristics, pretreatment diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) data, and out…

The neuroprotective effect of mesenchymal stem cells is mediated through inhibition of apoptosis in hypoxic ischemic injury.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal hypoxia ischemia causes severe brain damage. Stem cell therapy is a promising method for treating neuronal diseases. Clinical translation of human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) for the recovery of neurons after hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) may represent an effective therapy. METHODS: Primary neurons were exposed to oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) and subsequently cocultured with UC-MSCs. Apoptosis was examined by Annexin V-FITC-PI. Genes related to apoptosis were detected using RT-PCR and western-blot analyses. Using an in vivo model, H

Assessing Corticospinal Tract Asymmetry in Unilateral Polymicrogyria.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Asymmetry of the corticospinal tract in congenital lesions is a good prognostic marker for preserved motor function after hemispherectomy. This study aimed to assess this marker and provide a clinically feasible approach in selected cases of unilateral polymicrogyria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Corticospinal tract asymmetry of 9 patients with unilateral polymicrogyria substantially affecting the central region was retrospectively assessed on axial T1WI and DTI. Volumes of the brain stem and thalamus and DTI parameters of the internal capsule were measured. Two neuroradiolo…
