Celiac disease (CD) is the world's most common genetic food intolerance disorder. Children with celiac disease cannot tolerate gluten, a storage protein in wheat, rye, and barley. The first recognizable symptom in children is often an oral manifestation, rather than the typical gastrointestinal symptoms. The purpose of this paper is to review the oral and dental manifestations of CD to help pediatric dentists identify and refer atypically symptomatic patients to their pediatricians.

Odontomas are the most common benign odontogenic tumors of the oral cavity; however, their occurrence in the primary dentition is an extremely rare condition. When associated with primary teeth, odontomas may lead to disturbances in tooth eruption, which often requires a multidisciplinary treatment approach. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on odontomas of the primary dentition and discuss the management of a compound odontoma in a pediatric patient.

An impacted maxillary incisor in the early mixed dentition can pose a clinical challenge for orthodontists and pediatric dentists. Clinical observations supported with a 3-D imaging technique can help not only in assessing the precise location of the impacted tooth and its relation with neighboring teeth but also in correctly executing a treatment plan. The purpose of this paper is to describe the management of a severely rotated and horizontally impacted central incisor using intrabony rotation and simultaneous orthodontically-guided eruption. Timely intervention avoided disturbance in arch i

The maxilla rarely undergoes necrosis due to its rich vascularity. Maxillary necrosis can occur due to bacterial infections, viral infections, or fungal infections. Mucormycosis is an opportunistic fulminant fungal infection that mainly infects immunocompromised patients. The fungus invades the arteries, leading to thrombosis that subsequently causes necrosis of hard and soft tissues. The occurrence of mucormycosis is not considered rare in the jaws of adults, but involvement of the maxilla in infants is not usually seen. The purpose of this report is to discuss the diagnosis and management of

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a reactive local benign vascular lesion, where connective tissue fibrovascular proliferation occurs. The most common etiology of PG is chronic, low-level irritation. PG affects females mainly. The purpose of this paper is to report a giant pyogenic granuloma caused by an acute trauma in the upper lip of an 11-year-old boy. The initial clinical diagnosis suggested PG, which was confirmed after an excisional biopsy and a microscopic exam. Oral lesions of large proportions in children can cause functional, esthetic, and behavioral issues, and should be promptly investig

The purpose of this case report is to discuss the four-year follow-up of a transalveolar transplantation of an impacted immature permanent mandibular left canine. A nine year-old-boy was referred to the dental school because of a mandibular swelling associated with the impacted canine. Under local anesthesia, the tooth was extracted and transplanted in its own space, followed by a two-week orthodontic fixation. The radiographic examination two months later revealed the presence of external inflammatory root resorption, which was treated with an apexification. The overall status of the transpla

There is an association between persistent, prolonged inflammation of a primary tooth and the development of an inflammatory dentigerous cyst involving the succedaneous tooth. The purpose of this case report is to describe the management of an inflammatory dentigerous cyst of the permanent maxillary left central incisor in a nine-year-old boy caused by a long-term inflammation/infection of its predecessor. The treatment consisted of conservative decompression, which allowed for rapid healing and the eruption of the permanent tooth. The patient was followed up with periodic clinical and radiogr

For the last 70 years, the phenomenon of pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption (PIR) has been described in the literature, including a number of case reports illustrating the challenges clinicians face in diagnosing and managing these resorptive defects. Pre-eruptively affected teeth can be difficult to access and posteruptively they are difficult to diagnose because the defects resemble caries. Many times, these defects are not detected until after eruption, when the majority are diagnosed as dental decay and teeth are often subjected to surgical tooth restoration. The purposes of this paper a

Immature necrotic teeth after trauma pose both endodontic and restorative challenges because of incomplete closure of the apex, and thin and weakened dentinal walls that make them prone to fracture. The use of light-transmitting plastic posts, in combination with adhesive materials, enable intraradicular reinforcement of flared canals, helping to rehabilitate fractured immature teeth and maintain a functional unit within the dental arch. The purpose of this paper is to present the case of a nine-year-old patient who had a complicated fracture of an immature anterior tooth, which was endodontic

Eruption cyst is a benign lesion with favorable prognosis that may occur during the primary or permanent dental eruption. The purpose of this paper is to report the case of an infant who presented with multiple eruption cysts (ECs), describe their clinical and histological features, and discuss the treatment performed. The first ECs occurred around the primary mandibular central incisors when the patient was seven months old, which ruptured spontaneously. Ten months later, the patient presented with simultaneous eruption cysts around the primary mandibular and maxillary first molars, making th

Supernumerary teeth are common in the general population, with a prevalence that varies between 0.1 percent to 3.8 percent. Multiple supernumerary teeth are associated with Gardner's syndrome, Fabry-Anderson syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, labial palatal cleft, and cleidocranial dysplasia. Multiple hyperdontia not associated with syndromes is rare and ranges between 0.04 percent to 0.1 percent. The purpose of this report was to describe the occurrence of nonsyndromic multiple hyperdontia in monozygotic twin sisters.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether nutritional status, gender, weight, and height affected the number of erupted primary teeth in six- to 30 month-old children.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out involving an oral clinical examination, and weight and height measurements of 232 children, as well as a questionnaire filled out by their parents. Statistical analysis involved descriptive data, Spearman's correlation coefficient, Kruskall-Wallis test, and multiple linear regression in two sets, using the enter method to control the confounding factor (age) and

PURPOSE: The study's purpose was to survey directors of pediatric dental residency programs in order to evaluate the materials currently being taught and used for pulpotomy procedures for primary teeth in educational and clinical settings.
METHODS: A web-based survey was emailed to all graduate pediatric dental residency program directors in the United States.
RESULTS: Seventy one emails were sent to program directors, 47 responded but only 39 respondents (55%) were included in the study. Results suggested a slight decrease in utilization of formocresol 1:5 dilution (P<.01) and an increase i

Dentoalveolar ankylosis is described as the direct union between root cementum/dentin and alveolar bone. Its etiology is unknown, and conflicting opinions have been presented to explain it. Late detection of ankylosed primary teeth may cause serious problems to the occlusion and generally demands a more complex treatment approach. The purpose of this report is to present an unusual case of severe infraocclusion of the primary maxillary right second molar associated with a posterior crossbite in a 6-year-old child. The initial treatment option was tooth extraction, but the tooth resumed eruptio

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), previously known as juvenile chronic arthritis or juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, is a chronic disease of childhood with a spectrum of joint involvement and associated systemic involvement. The cause of JIA is poorly understood, and no drugs can cure the disease currently. Pediatric dentists should be familiar with the symptoms, complications, and oral manifestations of JIA to help manage the disease and provide quality care to these patients. The purpose of this case report is to review the condition and to describe the case of an adolescent with polyarticu

Contamination and subsequent retention of foreign bodies within wound surfaces may negatively influence healing following maxillofacial injuries. Larger foreign bodies that produce embedded or impalement injuries of soft tissues are easily detected. However, smaller contaminants, such as sand, gravel, food particles, wood splinters, and glass fibers, may not be easily identified in the initial examination, and their remnants may remain within the injury site even after debridement. Tissue reactions depend on the host response, type of foreign body, and nature of the wound surface. The purposes
