Alcohol consumption and cognitive function in elderly Japanese men.

Although heavy alcohol consumption has been identified as a risk factor for adverse cognitive functioning, it currently remains unclear whether moderate alcohol consumption exerts similar effects. Observational studies previously reported the potential benefits of moderate alcohol consumption on cognition, particularly in the elderly; however, these effects have not yet been demonstrated in Asian populations. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between alcohol consumption levels and global and domain-specific cognitive functions in cognitively intact elderly Japane…

Cognitive Changes in a Commercial Pilot Secondary to an Olfactory Meningioma.

BACKGROUND: Olfactory meningiomas are typically benign, slow-growing intracranial tumors with subtle presentations that result in delayed di … tory meningioma.DISCUSSION: Fitness-for-duty cases are often challenging and even more so when neurocognition is called into question. Symptoms may be subtle and gradual in onset, making recognition and diagnosis difficult. Dementia, alcohol or substance misuse/abuse, and psychiatric diagnoses are often the first conditions considered when evaluating new co …

The effect of cognitive task on postural stability in cervical dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Cervical dystonia (CD) is the most common form of focal dystonia. It is not known exactly whether abnormal head postures in cervical dystonia cause balance problems. Dual-tasking is a common every-day life situation. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate postural stability (PS) in patients with CD and the effect of cognitive task on PS. As a secondary aim, we evaluated the effect of onabotulinum toxin A (BoNT) injection on PS. METHODS: A total of 24 patients with CD who were on BoNT treatment for at least one year and 23 healthy controls were included. Posturographic analyses were carr

Matcha Improves Metabolic Imbalance-Induced Cognitive Dysfunction.

This study was conducted to assess the protective effect of extract of match (EM) on high-fat diet- (HFD-) induced cognitive deficits in male C57BL/6 mice. It was found that EM improved glucose tolerance status by measuring OGTT and IPGTT with HFD-induced mice. EM protected behavioral and memory dysfunction in Y-maze, passive avoidance, and Morris water maze tests. Consumption of EM reduced fat mass, dyslipidemia, and inflammation in adipose tissue. Also, EM ameliorated hepatic and cerebral antioxidant systems. EM improved the cerebral cholinergic system by regulating ACh contents and expressi

Facial Nerve Palsy: Clinical Practice and Cognitive Errors.

Facial paralysis is the most common cranial nerve paralysis and the majority of these are idiopathic. Idiopathic facial nerve paralysis, or Bell palsy, typically presents acutely, affects the entire face, may be associated with hyperacusis, a decrease in lacrimation, salivation, or dysgeusia, and typically resolves spontaneously. The diagnosis of idiopathic facial paralysis is made after a thorough history and physical examination to exclude alternative etiologies and follow-up to ensure recovery of facial function. Atypical presentation, recurrent paralysis, additional neurologic deficits, la

Neuropsychological predictors of cognitive deterioration in non-demented individuals.

Introduction: Previous studies performed neuropsychological tests in non-demented patients, especially those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), to predict dementia. Few recent studies reported that subjective cognitive decline (SCD) itself predicts dementia conversion. We evaluated certain characteristics and neuropsychological tests to predict cognitive deterioration in non-demented individuals. Methods: This study included 106 participants with subjective cognitive complaints (SCCs) classified as non-demented (90 MCI and 16 SCD). Data were collected at baseline and follow-up, wherein parti

Neurophysiological, neuropsychological, and cognitive effects of 30 days of isolation.

The increasing demand of space flights requires a profound knowledge of the chronologic reactions of the human body to extreme conditions. Prior studies already have shown the adverse effects of long-term isolation on psycho-physiological well-being. The chronology of the effects and whether short-term isolation periods already lead to similar effects has not been investigated. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of short-term isolation (30 days) on mood, cognition, cortisol, neurotrophic factors, and brain activity. 16 participants were isolated in the Human…

Neural correlates of early cognitive dysfunction in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Dementia is a common and feared aspect of Parkinson's disease but there are no robust predictors of cognitive outcome. Visuoperce … well and poorly in the task. RESULTS: We show that task performance at baseline predicts change in cognition in Parkinson's disease after 1 year. Our task-based fMRI study showed that the performance in this task is associated with activity in the posterior cingulate cortex/precuneus. We found that functional connectivity between this region and dorsomedia …

[Rare genetic markers of cognitive impairment in diabetes mellitus].

The study of potential mechanisms of cognitive impairments associated with gene expression in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) is becoming increasingly important due to the increase in the prevalence of dementia in this category of patients. DM is associated with the alteration of neurogenesis, and the variability of glycemia causes the changes in plasma and mitochondria, promotes the formation of free radicals, oxidative stress, activation of apoptosis of neurons, circulation of proinflammatory agents and other pathological factors. The association between diabetes and cognitive impairmen

Association between diabetic retinopathy and incident cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The relationship between diabetic retinopathy (DR) and cognitive impairment (CI) is unclear due to equivocal findings from cross-sectional studies and a lack of long-term data. In this population-based cohort study, we investigated the longitudinal association between the severity of DR and the incidence of CI. METHODS: 682 participants with diabetes, gradable retinal photographs and no CI at baseline 2004-2011) and complete relevant data at follow-up 2010-2016 from the Singapore Epidemiology of Eye Disease Study were included. CI was assessed using the validated Abbreviated M

The Impact of Cognitive and Behavioral Symptoms on ALS Patients and Their Caregivers.

Previously thought to be a pure motor disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is now established as multisystem neurodegenerative disorder that lies on a continuum with frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Cognitive and behavioral symptoms primarily extend to executive function, personality, social conduct, and emotion processing. The assessment and management of cognitive and behavioral symptoms is complicated as they must be differentiated from psychological responses to a terminal diagnosis and progressive physical impairment. This is made more difficult by the limited number of studies inve

Rumination and executive functions: Understanding cognitive vulnerability for psychopathology.

INTRODUCTION: Both rumination, a pattern of repetitive, self-focused thought in response to distress, and deficits in executive functions (EFs), a set of cognitive abilities that facilitate higher-order thinking, have transdiagnostic associations with psychopathology. Although empirical studies suggest associations between EFs and rumination, this literature has not examined subtypes of rumination and different components of EFs. It also has not examined whether rumination and EFs explain overlapping variance in psychopathology, which is relevant to theoretical models suggesting that ruminatio

[Focused Cognitive Therapy: A New Possibility for the Treatment of Depression].

In this literature review the new trends of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), namely behavioural activation and rumination-focused cognitive behavioural therapy are introduced as new methods for the treatment of major depression. Component-analytical studies of CBT showed that besides cognitive restructuring, behavioural components play an important role as active treatment factors. Behavioural activation and rumination-focused CBT emphasize these processes. The central idea of behavioural activation is that negative experiences in depression result in secondary avoidant behaviour. Clients

Cognitive symptoms of Alzheimer's disease: clinical management and prevention.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by the accumulation of amyloid β in the form of extracellular plaques and by intracellular neurofibrillary tangles, with eventual neurodegeneration and dementia. There is currently no disease-modifying treatment though several symptomatic medications exist with modest benefit on cognition. Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors have a consistent benefit across all stages of dementia; their benefit in mild cognitive impairment and prodromal AD is unproven. Memantine has a smaller benefit on cognition overall which is lim…

Respiratory function and cognitive profile in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is increasingly recognized as a multisystem disorder with 30%-50% of patients exhibiting cognitive impairment. The pathophysiological mechanisms of cognitive dysfunction are probably multifactorial although hypoventilation secondary to respiratory dysfunction may contribute to cognitive decline. The current study aimed to identify the relationship between respiratory function in ALS patients and the presence and degree of cognitive impairment. METHODS: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients were prospectively recruited from a multidi
