AR-Therapist: Design and Simulation of an AR-Game Environment as a CBT for Patients with ADHD.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in which patients have difficulties related to inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Those patients are in need of a psychological therapy use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to enhance the way they think and behave. This type of therapy is mostly common in treating patients with anxiety and depression but also is useful in treating autism, obsessive compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. A major limitation of traditional CBT is that therapists may face difficulty in optim

Impact of sex differences and gender specificity on behavioral characteristics and pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disorders.

The impact of neurodegenerative disorders in humans has multiple consequences because of the progressive decline in cognitive and physical performances. These disorders have diverse manifestations and are influenced by genetic and lifestyle factors, concurrent health conditions as well as un-modifiable predisposing risk factors, including gender and advanced age. Accumulating evidence indicates a gender-dependent natural bias of neurodegenerative diseases, such as, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease and multiple sclerosis, with the ratio of male to female prevalence

Psychiatric symptoms and related dysfunction in a general population sample.

BACKGROUND: Along with the key clinical features of major psychiatric disorders such as psychosis, mania, and depression, these disorders are also associated with cognitive, social, and functional deficits. A growing body of evidence suggests that these disorders exist at the extreme end of a continuum of symptoms rather than as binary entities, so it is plausible that the associated cognitive, social, and functional deficits assume a similar pattern. Consistent with this approach, we sought to determine whether adults in the general population with psychiatric symptoms also demonstrate milder

Caffeine, mental health, and psychiatric disorders.

Caffeine intake is so common that its pharmacological effects on the mind are undervalued. Since it is so readily available, individuals can adjust their own dose, time of administration and dose intervals of caffeine, according to the perceived benefits and side effects of each dose. This review focuses on human studies of caffeine in subjects with and without psychiatric disorders. Besides the possibility of mild drug dependence, caffeine may bring benefits that contribute to its widespread use. These benefits seem to be related to adaptation of mental energy to the context by increasing ale

Acute versus chronic functional aspects of unilateral spatial neglect.

This article reviews the impact of unilateral spatial neglect on daily living ("functional") activities. Its disturbances on basic functional activities, such as feeding, grooming, and locomotion, are easily identifiable. Patients with neglect frequently lack insight into their disorder and do not initiate compensatory behaviors, which probably impedes recovery. Simple standard tests of neglect during visual exploration correlate with impaired recovery of functional skills acutely following brain injury. However, unilateral neglect resolves in most individuals, yet many patients remain chronic

The interplay between cognitive and psychological factors in subjective cognitive decline: contribution to the validation of a new screening battery.

BACKGROUND: Subjective Cognitive Decline (SCD) is increasingly recognized as a potential early indicator of neurodegenerative disorders, yet its heterogeneous nature and lack of standardized screening tools complicate early detection and clinical management. This study aimed to comprehensively characterize a clinical SCD population and provide a preliminary contribution to the validation of a novel multidimensional screening battery, called MASCoD (Multidimensional Assessment of Subjective Cognitive Decline). METHODS: A total of 59 individuals (69.36 ± 8.66, female: 71,2%) with self-reported

The Microbiome-Gut-Brain axis regulates social cognition & craving in young binge drinkers.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking is the consumption of an excessive amount of alcohol in a short period of time. This pattern of consumption is highly prevalent during the crucial developmental period of adolescence. Recently, the severity of alcohol use disorders (AUDs) has been linked with microbiome alterations suggesting a role for the gut microbiome in its development. Furthermore, a strong link has emerged too between microbiome composition and socio-emotional functioning across different disorders including AUD. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential link (and its predictive v

Prednisolone versus placebo addition in the treatment of patients with recent-onset psychotic disorder: a trial design.

BACKGROUND: The symptom severity of a substantial group of schizophrenia patients (30-40%) does not improve through pharmacotherapy with antipsychotic medication, indicating a clear need for new treatment options to improve schizophrenia outcome. Meta-analyses, genetic studies, randomized controlled trials, and post-mortem studies suggest that immune dysregulation plays a role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Some anti-inflammatory drugs have shown beneficial effects on the symptom severity of schizophrenia patients. Corticosteroids are effective in various chronic inflammatory and aut

Case series of mild behavioral impairment: toward an understanding of the early stages of neurodegenerative diseases affecting behavior and cognition.

Mild behavioral impairment (MBI) is characterized by later life acquired, sustained, and impactful neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) of any severity that cannot be better accounted for by other formal medical and psychiatric nosology. MBI is an "at risk" state for incident cognitive decline and dementia, and for some, MBI is the index manifestation of neurodegeneration, observed in advance of cognitive impairment. Initially described in Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD), MBI evolved to describe a preclinical stage of all cause dementia, and has been operationalized in the International Society to Ad

Cognitive impairment in glaucoma.

Glaucoma, while regarded as an isolated ocular disorder, is now increasingly recognized as a component of a wider neurological spectrum. An accumulating body of neuroimaging-based studies have revealed structural and functional changes in the brain that are analogous to those observed in Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. These changes are further associated with systemic disturbances, including autonomic dysfunction, neuroinflammation, and elevated cortisol levels. This mounting evidence may elucidate the increased susceptibility of cognitive impairment and dementia observed in individuals

Low-frequency electroacupuncture attenuates methamphetamine-induced depressive-like behaviors and cognitive impairment via modulating neuroinflammation.

INTRODUCTION: Methamphetamine (METH) abuse primarily affects the central nervous system (CNS), leading to CNS damage and contributing to depressive-like behaviors, cognitive impairment, and other neuropsychiatric disorders. Electroacupuncture (EA) has shown promise in treating mental disorders linked to CNS damage, yet the effects of EA on METH-induced depressive-like behaviors and cognitive impairment and it's underlying therapeutic mechanisms remain largely unclear. METHODS: In this study, a mouse model of METH-induced neuropsychiatric dysfunction was established by administering high-dose

Preventing Delirium and Promoting Long-Term Brain Health: A Clinical Trial Design for the Perioperative Cognitive Enhancement (PROTECT) Trial.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND), including postoperative delirium (POD), are common in older adults and, for many, precipitate functional decline and/or dementia. OBJECTIVE: In this protocol, we describe a novel multidisciplinary, multicomponent perioperative intervention that seeks to prevent or reduce POD and associated cognitive decline. METHODS: We will conduct a prospective, single-blind, pragmatic, randomized-controlled trial to compare our tailored multi-disciplinary perioperative pathway against current standard of care practices. We will recruit a total of 6

Cholinergic denervation in patients with idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cholinergic dysfunction appears to play a role in the cognitive impairment observed in Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. The occurrence of cholinergic dysfunction in the early stages of these conditions, however, has not been investigated. The objective of this study was to investigate cholinergic function in patients with idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder (iRBD), a disorder recognized to be an early stage of both Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. METHODS: A total of 21 patients with polysomnography-confirmed iRBD

Comparison of brain connectivity between Internet gambling disorder and Internet gaming disorder: A preliminary study.

Background and aims Given the similarities in clinical symptoms, Internet gaming disorder (IGD) is thought to be diagnostically similar to Internet-based gambling disorder (ibGD). However, cognitive enhancement and educational use of Internet gaming suggest that the two disorders derive from different neurobiological mechanisms. The goal of this study was to compare subjects with ibGD to those with IGD. Methods Fifteen patients with IGD, 14 patients with ibGD, and 15 healthy control subjects were included in this study. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data for all participa

Visual memory uniquely predicts anhedonia in schizophrenia but not bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Deficits in memory have been suggested as an influential mechanism of anhedonia, because while pleasant experiences may be enjoyed in-the-moment, the cognitive processes involved in reporting anticipated or remembered enjoyable experiences is thought to be impaired. This study will determine whether any aspects of memory, including visual memory, verbal memory or working memory, are significantly predictive of anhedonia in a sample of schizophrenia, psychotic bipolar disorder and healthy controls. METHODS: The study included 38 individuals with schizophrenia, 19 individuals with bi
