Chronic haemolytic anaemia associated with adenylate kinase (AK) deficiency is very rare and only seven cases in five families have been described. We present six children of one family who are deficient of this enzyme and in three of them a combined G6PD deficiency was found. AK deficiency was transmitted by an autosomal recessive gene and heterozygous state was not accompanied by disease, whereas homozygously affected individuals present a congenital chronic non-spherocytic haemolytic anaemia with haemoglobin levels of 8-9 g/dl. Patients also deficient in G6PD suffer from a more severe haemo

Eight hundreds and fifteen patients of the Prof. Edgard Santos Hospital, Salvador, Bahia, were studied for G6PD deficiency by the spot test. The frequencies of deficients were 11,39% for the blacks, 7,85% for the dark mulattoes and 6,98% for the medium mulattoes. There was no difference in the percentage of deficients between out patients and patients in the wards. Also, there was no difference in the means for hematocrit, hemoglobin, frequency of hospitalization and type of disease between patients with the deficiency and the control patients. However, a past history for jaundice was signific

Opioid use in HIV infection has been associated with an increased frequency of neurological disease and cognitive impairment and vitamin A deficiency has been linked to progressive HIV disease in drug users. In this report the potential effects of these factors, alone and in combination, on gamma amino butyric acid (GABA)-expression interneurons in hippocampus in the HIV-1 transgenic rat (TG) model were studied. TG and wild-type (WT) F344 Fisher rats deficient in vitamin A from birth were implanted either with a 37.5 mg morphine tablet or with a matching placebo and total numbers of neurons an

BACKGROUND: Hypogammaglobulinemia is a condition that can be related to both primary and secondary immunodeficiencies. While the role of primary immunodeficiency in immune-mediated diseases is well known, its occurrence in systemic sclerosis is not reported.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to describe the clinical features associated with hypogammaglobulinemia in a cohort of limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis patients.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed medical records of systemic sclerosis patients from two Italian referral centres (2010-2024). Included patients had limited cutaneous system

The thyroid gland is an endocrine organ whose hormones enable the proper functioning of the organism. The normal function of this organ is influenced by internal and external factors. One of the external factors is trace elements. Trace elements in appropriate concentrations are necessary for the proper functioning of the thyroid. Fe, Cu, Mn, I, Zn, and Se are part of the enzymes involved in oxidative stress reduction, while Cd, Hg, and Pb can increase ROS production. Cu and Fe are necessary for the correct TPO synthesis. An imbalance in the concentration of trace elements such as Fe, Cu, Co,
