Integrating harm reduction and addiction care in HIV prevention among persons who inject drugs in the United States-a narrative review.

New human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases related to injection drug use (IDU) in the United States increased between 2016 and 2022. The uptake of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is exceedingly low in persons who inject drugs (PWID) despite its efficacy to prevent HIV. There are multilevel barriers in the PrEP care cascade for PWID. We need a combination of effective HIV prevention strategies, including PrEP, treatment for substance use disorder, and syringe services programs (SSP) to reverse the trend. A major challenge is the lack of knowledge and skills in harm reduction practices and addi

The Rise of Clinical Decision Support Algorithms in Pain Management 2009-2024.

This paper examines the rise of clinical decision support algorithms used to assess risk in pain management and the opioid industry's influence on their development and implementation. To understand this influence, we conducted a qualitative study of documents related to the development of a tool that relied on artificial intelligence (AI) to suggest modifications in opioid prescribing, called NarxCare. The study began with keyword searches of the Opioid Industry Document Archive (OIDA), which contained over 3 million documents at the time of the study, to examine the pharmaceutical industry's

Experiences and perceptions of employees and healthcare professionals on a multidisciplinary program for the secondary prevention of low back pain.

Low back pain (LBP) can lead to disability and sick leave, impacting work participation and overall health. Given the complex and multifactorial nature of LBP, Belgium's Federal Agency for Occupational Risks (FEDRIS) promotes a secondary prevention strategy for LBP among workers engaged in ergonomically demanding tasks. This strategy includes multidisciplinary-based rehabilitation (MBR) and an optional workplace intervention. This paper explored the experiences and perceptions of employees and healthcare professionals (HCPs) regarding the secondary prevention program with a focus on the MBR co

Interdisciplinary Oral Nutrition Support and Supplementation After Hip Fracture Surgery in Older Adult Inpatients: A Global Cross-Sectional Survey (ONS-STUDY).

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition predicts poor outcomes following hip fracture, affecting patient recovery, healthcare performance, and costs. Evidence-based guidelines recommend multicomponent, interdisciplinary nutrition care to improve intake, reduce complications, and enhance outcomes. This study examines global variation in oral nutrition support for older (65+ years) hip fracture inpatients. METHODS: A global survey was conducted as part of a broader program to improve interdisciplinary nutrition care. The protocol was based on evidence-based guidelines, reviewed by experts, and piloted for val

Diagnosis and management of secondary adrenal crisis.

Adrenal crisis (AC) is a life threatening acute adrenal insufficiency (AI) episode which can occur in patients with primary AI but also secondary AI (SAI), tertiary AI (TAI) and iatrogenic AI (IAI). In SAI, TAI and IAI, AC may develop when the HPA axis is unable to mount an adequate glucocorticoid response to severe stress due to pituitary or hypothalamic disruption. It manifests as an acute deterioration in multi-organ homeostasis that, if untreated, leads to shock and death. Despite the availability of effective preventive strategies, its prevalence is increasing in patients with SAI, TAI an

Potential role of immunotherapy and targeted therapy in the treatment of cancer: A contemporary nursing practice.

Immunotherapy and targeted therapy have emerged as promising therapeutic options for cancer patients. Immunotherapies induce a host immune response that mediates long-lived tumor destruction, while targeted therapies suppress molecular mechanisms that are important for tumor maintenance and growth. In addition, cytotoxic agents and targeted therapies regulate immune responses, which increases the chances that these therapeutic approaches may be efficiently combined with immunotherapy to ameliorate clinical outcomes. Various studies have suggested that combinations of therapies that target diff

Disproportionately High Rates of Burnout Among Disabled Caregivers During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Burnout is exhaustion caused by exposure to chronic stress. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, people with disabilities experienced high levels of burnout due to discrimination, barriers to accessing resources, and lack of accommodations. Caregivers have also experienced high levels of burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic. BACKGROUND: While researchers have examined burnout among caregivers of disabled children, less research has focused on the experiences of disabled caregivers. We examined the association between caregiver disability and burnout during the pandemic. METHODS: We di
