[Development of chewing center at transition period from sucking to chewing].

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to identify and to characterize the peripheral movement evoked by electrical stimulation given to the masticatory area of the cerebral cortex (Control group), and to clarify the development of the chewing center by examining the change in the peripheral movement when the tooth germs have been enucleated (Enucleation group). Puppies were used in the present study which were anesthetized with a 25% solution of Urethane (4 ml/kg, i.p.). Their heads were then, fixed in a stereotaxic apparatus, and the surfaces of the orbital gyrus was surgically exposed. E

Effects of different modes of stimulation on the morphology of the first QRS complex following pacing during digitalis-induced ventricular tachycardia: observations in the conscious dog with chronic complete atrioventricular block.

During digitalis-induced, sustained, monomorphic ventricular tachycardia, programmed electrical stimulation was performed and the effect on the first post-pacing QRS morphology was determined. Ventricular tachycardia was induced in nine conscious dogs with chronic complete atrioventricular block by administering digoxin i.v. 0.1 mg/kg given in 1-1 1/2 hour. Spontaneous ventricular tachycardia most frequently had a right bundle branch block morphology and an extreme left axis suggesting an origin in the apex of the left ventricle. Less frequently, a left bundle branch block-like configuration w

Small extracellular vesicles derived from sequential stimulation of canine adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells enhance anti-inflammatory activity.

BACKGROUND: Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are recognized for their therapeutic potential in immune modulation and tissue repair, especially in veterinary medicine. This study introduces an innovative sequential stimulation (IVES) technique, involving low-oxygen gas mixture preconditioning using in vitro fertilization gas (IVFG) and direct current electrical stimulation (ES20), to enhance the anti-inflammatory properties of sEVs from canine adipose-derived MSCs (cAD-MSCs). Initial steps involved isolation and comprehensive characterization of cAD

Incidence and characteristics of facial nerve stimulation in children with cochlear implants.

OBJECTIVES: Electrical stimulation from a cochlear implant can spread beyond the auditory nerve. The aims of this study were to accurately measure facial nerve stimulation in pediatric implant users and to determine the characteristics and incidence of this unwanted activity. Part A consisted of a prospective study of a randomized sample of 44 pediatric implant users. Part B consisted of a retrospective analysis of 121 children with previously recorded electrically evoked auditory brainstem responses (EABR). STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Responses were evoked by 3 electrodes along the implant arr

Clinical application of peroneal nerve stimulator system using percutaneous intramuscular electrodes for correction of foot drop in hemiplegic patients.

Objective.  To assess the orthotic effect of a functional electrical stimulation device (Akita Heel Sensor System; AHSS) in the treatment of hemiplegic gait with foot drop. Materials and Methods.  In the AHSS, a heel sensor is attached to a small plastic heel brace, and the peroneal nerve is stimulated via percutaneous intramuscular electrodes. During the swing phase of the hemiplegic gait, the common peroneal nerve is stimulated by the AHSS. Eight patients in chronic stages of hemiplegia participated in this study. Walking speeds and step cadences on a 10-m course were compared between walkin

Closed-loop stimulation modulates attention shifting in children.

Spontaneous fluctuations in attention can impede adaptation to changing goals and environments. Endogenous control over attentional shifts, referred to as attentional flexibility, is prone to disruption in children with attention deficit disorders. Here we studied in vivo intracranial recordings in children with epilepsy to identify a reproducible neural signature of attentional control that could predict and prevent impending lapses in real time. Machine learning classifiers were trained on intracranial signals while each child performed an attentional set-shifting task and predicted delays i

Effects of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation on motor and gait performance in Parkinson's disease: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a novel noninvasive therapy for Parkinson's disease (PD). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have reported inconsistent results on their effects. This meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of taVNS on motor and gait outcomes in PD. METHODS: This systematic review followed the PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251184160). The RCTs evaluating taVNS in patients with PD were systematically searched in PubMed, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, CNKI, VIP, and Wanfang databases up

An active electronic, high-density epidural paddle array for chronic spinal cord neuromodulation.

Objective. Epidural electrical stimulation (EES) has shown promise as both a clinical therapy and research tool for studying nervous system function. However, available clinical EES paddles are limited to using a small number of contacts due to the burden of wires necessary to connect each contact to the therapeutic delivery device, limiting the treatment area or density of epidural electrode arrays. We aimed to eliminate this burden using advanced on-paddle electronics.Approach. We developed a smart EES paddle with a 60-electrode programmable array, addressable using an active electronic mult

Associating sensory cues with incoming seizures: developing an animal model of auras.

For patients with epilepsy, one of the biggest problems is the unpredictability of the time when the next seizure will occur. Interestingly, some epileptic patients experience a sensory sensation preceding seizures, called aura, which helps them move to safety before a seizure. Here, we describe the development of the first animal model of auras, which could allow for a more detailed study of this phenomenon. Specifically, in mice, we presented sensory stimuli (sound and light cues) a few seconds before kindling an animal to induce seizures. Animals were kindled by electrical stimulation in th

Left or right ear? A neuroimaging study using combined taVNS/fMRI to understand the interaction between ear stimulation target and lesion location in chronic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Implanted vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) and transcutaneous auricular VNS (taVNS) have been primarily administered clinically to the unilateral-left vagus nerve. This left-only convention has proved clinically beneficial in brain disorders. However, in stroke survivors, the presence of a lesion in the brain may complicate VNS-mediated signaling, and it is important to understand the laterality effects of VNS in stroke survivors to optimize the intervention. OBJECTIVE: To understand whether taVNS delivered to different ear targets relative to the lesion (ipsilesional vs contralesion

Non-invasive cervical vagus nerve stimulation effects on reaction time and valence image anticipation response.

BACKGROUND: Norepinephrine (NE) driven noninvasive vagus nerve stimulation (nVNS), which improves attention and reduces reaction time, augments learning. Equally important, endogenous NE mediated arousal is highly dependent on the valence (positive or negative) of the exogenous stimulus. But to date, no study has measured valence specific effects of nVNS on both functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) anticipation task response and reaction time in healthy individuals. Therefore, the aim of this pilot study was to assess whether nVNS vs sham modulates valence cortical anticipation task re

A direct comparison of voice pitch processing in acoustic and electric hearing.

In single-sided deafness patients fitted with a cochlear implant (CI) in the affected ear and preserved normal hearing in the other ear, acoustic and electric hearing can be directly compared without the need for an external control group. Although poor pitch perception is a crucial limitation when listening through CIs, it remains unclear how exactly the cortical processing of pitch information differs between acoustic and electric hearing. Hence, we separately presented both ears of 20 of these patients with vowel sequences in which the pitch contours were either repetitive or variable, whil

Reassessment of the Effect of Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation Using a Novel Burst Paradigm on Cardiac Autonomic Function in Healthy Young Adults.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) may modulate cardiac autonomic function. However, the response rate of the traditional tonic paradigm is low, and the results remain inconsistent. A recent pilot study presented a novel burst paradigm to activate the cardiac parasympathetic system, which might offer a new approach to treat cardiac autonomic function. The present study reassessed the effect of burst taVNS on modulating heart rate variability and explored the difference between burst and traditional tonic paradigms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-two young adult

Analgesic dorsal root ganglionic field stimulation blocks conduction of afferent impulse trains selectively in nociceptive sensory afferents.

Increased excitability of primary sensory neurons after peripheral nerve injury may cause hyperalgesia and allodynia. Dorsal root ganglion field stimulation (GFS) is effective in relieving clinical pain associated with nerve injury and neuropathic pain in animal models. However, its mechanism has not been determined. We examined effects of GFS on transmission of action potentials (APs) from the peripheral to central processes by in vivo single-unit recording from lumbar dorsal roots in sham injured rats and rats with tibial nerve injury (TNI) in fiber types defined by conduction velocity. Probing Sensory Readout via Combined Choice-Correlation Measures and Microstimulation Perturbation.

It is controversial whether covariation between neuronal activity and perceptual choice (i.e., choice correlation) reflects the functional readout of sensory signals. Here, we combined choice-correlation measures and electrical microstimulation on a site-to-site basis in the medial superior temporal area (MST), middle temporal area (MT), and ventral intraparietal area (VIP) when macaques discriminated between motion directions in both fine and coarse tasks. Microstimulation generated comparable effects between tasks but heterogeneous effects across and within brain regions. Within the MST and

Safety and tolerability of Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve stimulation in humans; a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve stimulation (tVNS) may be an alternative to surgically implanted VNS for epilepsy and other diseases. However, its safety and tolerability profile is unclear. OBJECTIVE: We performed a systematic review of treatment harms from tVNS in humans. METHODS: A systematic published and grey literature search was carried out to identify studies which deployed tVNS in human subjects. Study authors were contacted for safety/tolerability data if these were not available in the publication. Databases were searched from 1966 to May 2017. We noted study type, populati
