This study examined the factor structure of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) in low socioeconomic status African Americans (n=426). Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the four factors-(1) depressed affect, (2) positive affect, (3) somatic complaints, and (4) interpersonal problems-of the CES-D scale previously found in the general population were supported in this sample. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this report was to describe epidemiological, clinical, and bacteriological findings in cases of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia at the Infectious Diseases Clinic in Dakar.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was carried out on data recorded between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 2002. The diagnosis of bacteremia was based on isolation of bacteria from blood culture. Bacterial susceptibility was studied with an antibiogram. Infections with Schistosoma mansoni and hookworms are widespread in sub-Saharan Africa and the burden of disease associated with both parasites is enormous. Although there is a large overlap in their geographic distribution, little is known about the association between S. mansoni and hookworm infections and the underlying mechanisms. We explored this association among 325 schoolchildren from Côte d'Ivoire, by screening multiple stool specimens over consecutive days. A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for biomonitoring of occupational wood dust exposure based on nasal lavage as a biomonitoring matrix was developed. We experienced 142 cases with community-acquired pneumonia between April 1998 and March 2000. By measuring the titers of respiratory viruses for these cases, we were able to identify acute phase infections of influenza A virus in 10 cases and RS virus in 6 cases and determined that there was an increase in community-acquired pneumonia during both winter seasons.
