Occurrence, Phenotypic and Molecular Characteristics of Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase-Producing Escherichia coli in Healthy Turkeys in Northern Egypt.

Poultry is one of the most important reservoirs for zoonotic multidrug-resistant pathogens. The indiscriminate use of antimicrobials in poultry production is a leading factor for development and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance. This study aimed to describe the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of E. coli isolated from healthy turkey flocks of different ages in Nile delta region, Egypt. In the current investigation, 250 cloacal swabs were collected from 12 turkey farms in five governorates in the northern Egypt. Collected samples were cultivated on BrillianceTM ESBL agar media s

Association between antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance of Streptococcus uberis causing clinical mastitis.

It is unknown whether overuse of antimicrobials against clinical mastitis (CM) from Streptococcus uberis is associated with increased antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the association between antimicrobial use (AMU) and AMR in relation to the Strep. uberis causing CM in dairy herds. A total of 83 Strep. uberis isolates were selected from a collection created during a previous study evaluating the epidemiology of CM in dairy herds (n = 17) of southeastern Brazil. For each case of CM identified on farm, the following information was recorded: cow's

Serotypes and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Nasopharyngeal Isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae from Children Less Than 5 Years Old in Egypt.

PURPOSE: Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) is the etiology of severe and life-threatening infections in children less than 5 years old. Though pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) are effective in the prevention of pneumococcal infections, yet they are not included in the National Immunization Program in Egypt pending the identification of pathogenic serotypes. As S. pneumoniae colonization of the pharynx predisposes to pneumonia and invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) caused by the colonizing serotypes, identification of the nasopharyngeal (NP) serotypes can be a surrogate to the inv

Pharyngeal colonization and drug resistance profiles of Morraxella catarrrhalis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Haemophilus influenzae among HIV infected children attending ART Clinic of Felegehiwot Referral Hospital, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic pharyngeal colonization by potential bacteria is the primary reservoir for bacterial species within a population and is considered a prerequisite for development of major childhood diseases such as sinusitis, otitis media, pneumonia, bacteremia, and meningitis. However, there is dearth of data on the colonization and drug resistance pattern of the main bacterial pathogens in the pharynx of HIV infected children in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study determined the pharyngeal colonization and drug resistance profile of bacterial pathogens in HIV infected children attending

Impact of "Raised without Antibiotics" Beef Cattle Production Practices on Occurrences of Antimicrobial Resistance.

The specific antimicrobial resistance (AMR) decreases that can be expected from reducing antimicrobial (AM) use in U.S. beef production have not been defined. To address this data gap, feces were recovered from 36 lots of "raised without antibiotics" (RWA) and 36 lots of "conventional" (CONV) beef cattle. Samples (n = 719) were collected during harvest and distributed over a year. AMR was assessed by (i) the culture of six AM-resistant bacteria (ARB), (ii) quantitative PCR (qPCR) for 10 AMR genes (ARGs), (iii) a qPCR array of 84 ARGs, and (iv) metagenomic sequencing. Generally, AMR levels were

Antimicrobial activity of buffalo milk whey hydrolysates against multidrug-resistant bacteria isolated from dairy products.

BACKGROUND: Dairy products are nutritionally rich food items that are potentially reservoirs for food pathogenic microorganisms, especially multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, if produced and/or handled under poor hygienic conditions. In addition to the fear of acquiring antimicrobial resistance within the dairy production chain, bioactive peptides from milk whey are attracting attention as natural substitutes for antimicrobial agents and as potential replacements for traditional antibiotics. AIM: The current study attempts to isolate and describe different bacterial species from various freq

Prevalence, Antimicrobial Resistance, and Genetic Diversity of Non-Typeable Streptococcus pneumoniae Carriage: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Non-typeable Streptococcus pneumoniae (NT-Sp) strains lack detectable capsules and are often missed by traditional serotyping. While associated primarily with asymptomatic carriage, NT-Sp has emerged as a key player in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) gene dissemination and serotype replacement in the post-vaccine era. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesize global evidence on NT-Sp carriage, its prevalence, antimicrobial resistance patterns, and genetic diversity. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect was condu

Critical genomic insights into vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium in Lebanon.

UNLABELLED: Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE) poses a global public health threat, with particularly severe ramifications in low-resource settings. While E. faecium is commonly a commensal organism in the human gut, the acquisition of vancomycin resistance has contributed to the emergence of VRE as a major cause of hospital-acquired infections, especially in vulnerable populations. This study investigates the genetic characteristics of VRE isolated from hospitalized patients in Lebanon, focusing on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) phenotypes and the underlying resistome. We collect

Septic Arthritis of the Elbow: A 10-Year Retrospective Clinical and Microbiological Review From a Single Center.

Introduction In industrialized nations, the incidence of septic arthritis (SA) varies depending on geographic region, socioeconomic status, and age group. The condition is more frequently observed in male individuals, the elderly, and children. Additionally, its prevalence may have increased due to a rise in orthopaedic procedures, an aging population, and higher rates of immunosuppression. Hence, understanding the evolving clinical and epidemiological patterns of SA is crucial, along with identifying the common microbiological causes and pathogens involved. Industrial dog food is a vehicle of multidrug-resistant enterococci carrying virulence genes often linked to human infections.

The increase in the number of pets in recent years has been followed by an exponential growth of the industrial pet food sector, which has been accompanied by new food safety risks, namely antibiotic resistance. The aim of this study was to investigate whether dog food commercially available in Portugal is a reservoir of clinically-relevant antibiotic resistant Enterococcus. Fifty-five samples (25 brands; 22 wet, 14 raw frozen, 8 dry, 7 treats and 4 semi-wet) were collected on 9 commercial surfaces in the Porto region (September 2019 to January 2020). Most samples were obtained from brands tha
