Animal Models of Tinnitus Treatment: Cochlear and Brain Stimulation.

Neuromodulation, via stimulation of a variety of peripheral and central structures, is used to suppress tinnitus. However, investigative limitations in humans due to ethical reasons have made it difficult to decipher the mechanisms underlying treatment-induced tinnitus relief, so a number of animal models have arisen to address these unknowns. This chapter reviews animal models of cochlear and brain stimulation and assesses their modulatory effects on behavioral evidence of tinnitus and its related neural correlates. When a structure is stimulated, localized modulation, often presenting as dow

The COVID-19 pandemic: challenges in providing supportive care to those with cardiovascular disease in a time of plague.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: COVID-19 has permeated the very essence of human existence and society and disrupted healthcare systems. The attrition stemming from this highly contagious disease particularly affects those rendered vulnerable by age and infirmity, including those with underlying cardiovascular disease. This article critically reviews how best to integrate supportive care into the management of those affected. RECENT FINDINGS: Numerous studies have described the pathophysiology of COVID-19, including that specifically arising in those with cardiovascular disease. Potential treatment strate

The situation of vaccines for the prevention of infections in adults: An opinion paper on the situation in Spain.

The childhood immunization schedule is well known and generally well implemented in developed countries. For various reasons, the same is not true of vaccines aimed at preventing infections in adults, in which vaccination coverage is incomplete and generally very deficient. In order to assess the situation of adult vaccination in Spain, the Fundación de Ciencias de la Salud has brought together a series of experts in different fields, including doctors, nurses, representatives of patient associations, health managers and economists, health authorities and journalists to deal with this issue. The effectiveness of Korean medicine treatment in male patients with infertility: a study protocol for a prospective observational pilot study.

UNLABELLED: Male factor subfertility has increasingly been considered the cause of infertility in couples. Many men with male infertility have sperm problems such as oligozoospermia, asthenozoospermia, or teratozoospermia. Because abnormal semen parameters are idiopathic to some extent, no standard therapy has been established to date. Herbal medicine has been reported to have beneficial properties in the treatment of subfertility, especially in improving semen quality both in vivo and in human studies. Therefore, we intend to investigate the effectiveness and safety of treatment using Korean

Efficacy evaluation of an anti-caries varnish: protocol for a phase II randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries (tooth decay) is a common disease in which the products of sugar metabolism by certain bacteria that populate the tooth surface induce the development and progression of lesions (cavities). This is a phase II single-centre randomised, double-blind, active-controlled, parallel-group trial to assess the efficacy of a combination povidone iodine and sodium fluoride dental varnish to determine if it is superior to a varnish containing only sodium fluoride in the prevention of new caries lesions. The objective of this report is to describe the rationale and protocol for

Trade and health: how World Trade Organization (WTO) law affects alcohol and public health.

AIMS: The alcohol field is becoming more aware of the consequences of world trade law for alcohol policies. However, there is a need for greater clarity about the different effects of trade on alcohol-related harm. METHODS: A comprehensive review of all literature on alcohol and world trade [including World Trade Organization (WTO) disputes on alcohol], supported by a more selective review of other relevant cases, academic reports and the grey literature on trade and health. RESULTS: The burden of WTO law on alcohol policies depends upon the type of policy in question. Purely protectionist p

Effect of an artificial intelligence health education accurately linking system on self-management in young and middle-aged patients after percutaneous coronary intervention: a protocol.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery disease is a common heart disease worldwide, and the morbidity and mortality rates among Chinese residents continue to rise. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) can improve survival rates, but long-term management is required after the procedure. Traditional interventions have shortcomings such as dependence on medical institutions and the lack of personalized treatment plans. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Artificial Intelligence-based Health Education Precision Linkage System (AI-HEALS) in improving self-health management among young and

Causal discovery and treatment effect heterogeneity of futile recanalisation (CADISTH) for large vessel occlusion stroke: protocol and rationale for a multicentre prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Endovascular therapy (EVT) achieves high rates of successful recanalisation (modified Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction ≥2 b) in large vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke; however, functional recovery remains limited. Futile recanalisation (FR)—defined as poor functional outcome (modified Rankin Scale (mRS) 3–6) despite successful reperfusion—occurs in over half of patients. The underlying causal mechanisms and inter-individual heterogeneity of FR remain poorly understood, hindering effective prevention and personalised management. This study aims to apply causal discovery algorithms

The mediating and moderating roles of physical sub-health in the relationship between family functioning and mental health problems among Chinese adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent mental health is shaped by both family environments and physical well-being. However, the role of physical sub-health, a state of functional imbalance and fatigue prior to diagnosable illness, remains poorly understood in this process. This study examined whether physical sub-health serves both as a psychosomatic pathway and as a vulnerability factor linking family functioning to adolescent mental health. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 647 primary and secondary school students across China. Validated scales were used to assess family functioning, p

Program LIFT: protocol for a pilot feasibility factorial randomised controlled trial of digital single-session interventions to address self-harm and suicidal ideation in Australian community-based adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Self-injurious thoughts and behaviours (SITBs) represent a critical public and mental health challenge. Adolescents are disproportionately at risk for engaging in SITBs. Intervening early and addressing pathogenic and proximal risk/vulnerability factors is of critical importance for this vulnerable population. Digital Single-Session Interventions (D-SSIs) offer a promising solution to unmet need for accessible, scalable and engaging care. This pilot study aims to evaluate the acceptability and feasibility of the interventions and clinical trial protocol for Programme LIFT (Little

Digital Cognitive Behavioral Treatment of Insomnia in Youth: Protocol for an RCT Examining Feasibility, Acceptability, and Efficacy of LAMBI.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic insomnia is associated with negative effects for children (impaired academic performance, mood and behavioral dysregulation) and their caregivers (poor sleep, stress, fatigue). Chronic insomnia is also common (up to 20% of children, 50-80% in the context of comorbidities), but underdiagnosed/treated in pediatric primary care (<10% treated). Cognitive behavioral treatment for insomnia (CBTi) is the recommended "first-line" treatment for insomnia and systematic reviews and meta-analyses provide evidence of its short-term efficacy and safety in children with chronic insomnia
