BACKGROUND: Angiostrongylus daskalovi is a rare cardiopulmonary nematode infecting badgers. The parasite was described in 1988 and, since then, found only once in mustelids in Europe. The present study aims to report new cases of patent A. daskalovi infection in badgers from northern Romania and to provide new information on its ultrastructure, molecular diagnosis, and pathology.
METHODS: Eight road-killed or hunted badgers originating from Maramureș and Alba counties in Romania were collected and necropsied. Adults and larvae of cardio-pulmonary nematodes were collected and examined by light

Hyponatraemia is the most common electrolyte disorder seen in clinical practice and the consequences can range from minor symptoms to life-threatening complications including seizures and cardiorespiratory distress. These effects occur as a result of fluid shifts due to deranged serum tonicity and subsequent cerebral oedema. The appropriate assessment and management of patients with hyponatraemia is not always achieved in clinical practice, which is partly related to challenges in teaching with limited clinical guidance. Recently, the European Society of Endocrinology, European Society of Inte

Tronchin's main importance lies in his contribution to personal hygiene, more than to pioneering research. He was an industrious promotor of the inoculations of smallpox against all opposition offered by conservative physicians politicians and theologists. As an inoculator he was most successful in France, the Netherlands and Switzerland. He always tried to suppress malpractice committed by his colleagues and never ran away from conflicts.

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a chronic cerebrovascular disease involving progressive bilateral stenosis of the intracranial segments of the internal carotid arteries. It results in the development of a rich, but friable collateral supply, prone to rupture. The disease is well described in Japanese literature and was originally thought to be a predozminantly Eastern disease. However, the recent literature describes a Western phenotype that may present with a different clinical course. This review aims to describe the variations in the epidemiology of the MMD between Eastern and Western populations

Babesiosis is an emerging parasitic, anthropo-zoonotic tick-borne disease, seldom diagnosed in humans. Caused by Protozoa, Babesia (also called Piroplasma) intraerytrocytic piriform microorganism. Infection of vertebrates is transmitted by ticks. Out of more than 100 Babesia species/genotypes described so far, only some were diagnosed in infected humans, mostly B. microti, B. divergens and B. venatorum (Babesia sp. EU1). Infection in humans is often asymptomatic or mild but is of a particular risk for asplenic individuals, those with congenital or acquired immunodeficiencies, and elderly. Infe

Anorectal malformations (ARM) have a low prevalence, patients need specialized surgical care, and in many cases, patients born with ARM even need life-long aftercare. Due to its low prevalence most patients are still treated in low-volume pediatric surgical centers without any adequate monitoring of the outcome. Data on prevalence, comparison of different surgical techniques, and prospective outcome measurements are still scarce and difficult to interpret. In 2010, a consortium was founded (ARM-Net consortium) including several European pediatric surgical centers to collaborate more in researc

The frequency of occurrence of tick-borne encephalitis has increased significantly in Europe and Finland during the past twenty years. There has been a suspicion that the Finnish cases have at least over the last few years been more severe than described in the literature. We analyzed the approximately one hundred cases of tick-borne encephalitis diagnosed in Finland over a three-year period. In two thirds of the patients general physical condition deteriorated clearly, the disease caused permanent disability or the patients required supportive measures in the hospital, such as ventilator ther

Neisseria meningitidis is a Gram-negative β-proteobacterium responsible for an endemic worldwide infection. The epidemiology and serogroup distribution can change very quickly. The incidence of meningitis infection varies from very rare to more than 1000 cases per 100,000 of the population yearly. The carriage of N. meningitidis, which represents an exclusive human commensal, is asymptomatic, but in rare cases bacteria proliferate in the CNS and rapidly lead to the death of the affected subjects. Host genetic factors, such as single nucleotide polymorphisms, can promote meningococcal disease,

This article reviews the life and work of Sir William O'Shaughnessy Brooke (formerly Sir William Brooke O'Shaughnessy), an Edinburgh doctor of medicine and Fellow of the Royal Society who as a young doctor in London analysed the blood and excreta of cholera victims, an action which led to the first successful use of intravenous replacement therapy. His career in India was distinguished in several spheres: chemistry, pharmacology in which he introduced cannabis indica to Europe, and in the field of electric telegraphy where he became the superintendent of telegraphs for India.

BACKGROUND: In view of the current epidemic of contact allergy to methylisothiazolinone (MI), it is important to clarify the extent of use of MI and related isothiazolinones in paints currently available for the consumer and worker in Europe.
OBJECTIVES: To elucidate the use and concentrations of MI, methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI) and benzisothiazolinone (BIT) in paints on the European retail market.
METHODS: Wall paints (n = 71) were randomly purchased in retail outlets in five European countries. The paints were quantitatively analysed for their contents of MI, MCI and BIT by high-perfo

Bats are being increasingly recognized as reservoir hosts of highly pathogenic and zoonotic emerging viruses (Marburg virus, Nipah virus, Hendra virus, Rabies virus, and coronaviruses). While numerous studies have focused on the mentioned highly human-pathogenic bat viruses in tropical regions, little is known on similar human-pathogenic viruses that may be present in European bats. Although novel viruses are being detected, their zoonotic potential remains unclear unless further studies are conducted. At present, it is assumed that the risk posed by bats to the general public is rather low. I

There are currently limited data on the trends in case reporting of poisoned patients undergoing enhanced elimination with an extracorporeal treatment (ECTR). The present manuscript specifically reviews the longitudinal trends of reports according to technique, poison, and country of publication. To identify case reports of ECTR use in the management of poisoning, multiple databases were searched. There were no limitations on language and year of publication. All case reports describing individual patients undergoing ECTR with the intent of enhancing the elimination of a poison were included i

Measles and rubella persist in the World Health Organization European Region despite long-standing and widespread use of vaccines against them. Our aim was to review the epidemiology of measles and rubella in relation to the goal of eliminating these diseases from the Region by 2015. We report on the number of measles and rubella cases by country in 2012 and present an analysis of preliminary measles and rubella surveillance data for 2013. We analysed data of these diseases for 2013 by age group, diagnosis confirmation (clinical, laboratory-confirmed and epidemiologically linked), and vaccinat

Mosquitoes represent a major and global cause of human suffering due to the diseases they transmit. These include parasitic diseases, i.e. malaria and filariasis, and viral infections such as dengue, encephalitis, and yellow fever. The threat of mosquito-borne diseases is not limited to tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Trade and climate changes have opened new niches to tropical vectors in temperate areas of the world, thus putting previously unaffected regions at risk of disease transmission. The most notable example is the spread of Aedes species, particularly the Asian tiger m

OVERVIEW: Over 22 Bartonella species have been described in mammals, and Bartonella henselae is most common worldwide. Cats are the main reservoir for this bacterium. B henselae is the causative agent of cat scratch disease in man, a self-limiting regional lymphadenopathy, but also of other potentially fatal disorders in immunocompromised people.
INFECTION: B henselae is naturally transmitted among cats by the flea Ctenocephalides felis felis, or by flea faeces. A cat scratch is the common mode of transmission of the organism to other animals, including humans. Blood transfusion also represen

Several diseases have been clinically or genetically related to cystic fibrosis (CF), but a consensus definition is lacking. Here, we present a proposal for consensus guidelines on cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR)-related disorders (CFTR-RDs), reached after expert discussion and two dedicated workshops. A CFTR-RD may be defined as "a clinical entity associated with CFTR dysfunction that does not fulfil diagnostic criteria for CF". The utility of sweat testing, mutation analysis, nasal potential difference, and/or intestinal current measurement for the differential dia
