Barriers and facilitators of brace compliance in adolescents with spinal deformities: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and Scheuermann's kyphosis (SK) are common spinal deformities affecting different aspects of teenagers' lives. Conservative treatments such as bracing and exercise are key for managing these spinal deviations before skeletal maturity. This qualitative descriptive study explored factors influencing adolescents' adherence to brace treatment for spinal deformities, with the goal of identifying barriers and facilitators to compliance. METHODS: Seventy-four participants, including 32 adolescents, their parents (27 mothers and 5 fathers), and health

Association between problematic smartphone use and gaming and disruptive behavioral disorder symptoms among Korean adolescents: a nationwide representative study.

BACKGROUND: Problematic smart device use is a growing public health concern among adolescents and is often associated with disruptive behavioral disorders (DBDs). However, little is known about how these associations depend on parental and residential factors in nationally representative populations. METHODS: Data were obtained from the 2022 Korean National Mental Health Survey of Children and Adolescents. The analysis was performed on the data of adolescents aged 12-17 years who completed the DBD questionnaire (n=3,084 for problematic smartphone use [PSU]; n=2,393 for problematic gaming [PG]

From Peer Victimization to Depressive Symptoms Through Acculturative Stress in South Korean Multicultural Adolescents: The Complex Moderating Roles of Family Support.

Background/Objectives: Adolescents from multicultural families in South Korea, most with foreign-born mothers and Korean fathers, may be vulnerable to peer victimization due to cultural, linguistic, or appearance-related differences. Grounded in minority stress theory, this study examined whether acculturative stress mediated the prospective association between peer victimization and depressive symptoms and whether family support, perceived across T1 (Year 1 of middle school) and T2 (Year 2 of middle school), moderated these pathways among adolescents from multicultural families. Methods: The

Care for the Caregiver: How Caregiver Mortality Affects Treatment Outcomes-An Observational Cohort Study.

Despite improvements in HIV management, children and adolescents living with HIV remain vulnerable. Caregiver mortality in a large paediatric and adolescent HIV clinic in Johannesburg is described and the effect of the death of a caregiver on children and adolescents' HIV treatment outcomes was investigated. We analysed retrospective longitudinal data and included children or adolescents attending the clinic between 01 January and 31 December 2021 divided into those with documented primary caregiver mortality and those without (ever documented). Viral load, treatment regimens, CD4, and anthrop

Effects of Loneliness and Subjective Well-Being on Depression in Female Adolescents: A Longitudinal Moderated Mediation Model of the Parental Relationship.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescent depressive symptoms are increasingly recognized as a global concern for youth mental health. Female adolescents consistently report higher levels of depressive symptoms than their male counterparts, yet the psychological mechanisms underlying depressive symptoms remain insufficiently understood. Our longitudinal study examined the relationship between loneliness and depressive symptoms in female adolescents and investigated the mediating effect of subjective well-being (SWB) and the moderating influence of the parental relationship. METHODS: Data were drawn from the Kore

Awareness and knowledge of familial breast and ovarian cancer among German general practice patients.

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to describe the awareness and knowledge of familial breast and ovarian cancer among German males and females. Participants were patients ≥18 years from six general practices in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Between April 26 and July 11, 2024, all patients in the waiting room of the practices were systematically approached by a study assistant and invited to an anonymous self-administered survey on familial cancer prevention and health behaviors. A total of 479 (67.0%) patients participated, and 437 with complete outcome data were analyzed (mean age =

"The system's not getting my grandchild": A qualitative study of caregiver relationship formation for children born to incarcerated mothers.

Women who give birth during their incarceration in most states in the US are separated from their newborns, who are placed with non-maternal caregivers. Infants of incarcerated mothers are a highly vulnerable population for which caregiving relationships may be particularly important for their wellbeing. Despite this, incarcerated mothers may be responsible for selecting a caregiver with no formal guidance. However, this process is poorly understood. The goal of this study was to understand how families form caregiving relationships during a mother's incarceration in state prisons in Georgia.

Children's Caregiving and Growth in Northwestern Tanzania: Limited Evidence That Support From Specific Caregivers Is Associated With Better Growth.

Receiving care from individuals other than one's mother (i.e., allomothering) is a universal aspect of raising children, but whether and how such care impacts children's health remains subject to debate. Existing studies in low-income societies largely use broad proxies for caregiving behaviors rather than measuring childcare activities, which may mask variation in allomothering and, thus, its impact on children's health. Using data collected to address these limitations we measure, for 808 children under 5 years in Northwestern Tanzania: (a) Maternal residence, (b) receipt of two childcare ty

Parent-child communication and third generation's difficulties: Roles of parental depression and self-efficacy.

This study examines whether parents' past communication with their own parents is associated with children's psychological difficulties and whether this association is mediated by parents' depression and self-efficacy. Evidence of the intergenerational transmission of parent-child relationships is well-documented in the literature, but few studies have explored the intergenerational paths between grandparents' and parents' (first and second generations, G1-G2, respectively) communication, parents' depression and sense of efficacy, and children's (third generation, G3) psychological difficultie

Parents' experiences of paediatric end-of-life care in the UK: a multisite qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the marked improvement in child mortality over the last two decades, more than 7 million infants, children and young people still die worldwide every year. In the UK, four National Health Service settings care for more than 60% of the children who die each year: neonatal and paediatric intensive care units and children and teenager cancer principal treatment centres. There is limited evidence on how end-of-life care is experienced by parents and how this differs across settings. We aimed to explore parents' experiences of receiving end-of-life care for their child in these

"Knock me down a little bit more": Support networks of parents impacted by the child welfare system, a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Families impacted by the child welfare system (CWS) face increased risks of poverty, family dysfunction, and poor child outcomes. Strong support networks, comprised of formal support from government programs or service providers and informal support from family and friends, are an under-researched potential mechanism to facilitate family engagement and protect against child maltreatment. OBJECTIVE: This study's objective was to describe formal and informal supports among parents with substantiated maltreatment who recently entered the CWS to understand parents' situations and cond

Aggression, Suicidality, and Emotion Profiles in Youth: Links to Early Life Adversity.

Suicidality and physical aggression are leading, related youth public health concerns. Yet, whether adolescents who harm themselves, others, or both differ emotionally and etiologically remains unclear. To address this, adolescents from a prospective population-based birth cohort reported their suicidality, physical aggression, depression/anxiety symptoms, anger, and callousness (N = 1637). Distinct latent harm-emotion profiles were identified, which were linked to perinatal and childhood experiences. A six-profile solution was retained: Low harm (79.5%), moderate suicidality (6.5%), high suic

Vaccination Coverage and Determinants Among Children Aged 12-35 Months Following Internal Conflict in Yemen: Insights from a Nationwide Population-Based Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Child vaccination is a crucial public health indicator, especially in conflict-affected regions. Despite the benefits, vaccination rates in Yemen remain suboptimal. This study evaluates vaccination coverage and its correlates among children aged 12-35 months in Yemen. METHODS: Data from the Yemen Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) 2022-23 were used. The survey covered 22 governorates, using a two-stage household selection process, and included 7,796 children. Vaccination status was assessed using a binary composite variable for full immunization. Multilevel logistic regres

Success Rates of Assisted Reproduction for Men With Cystic Fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: The vast majority of men with CF (mwCF) are infertile. Improvements in assisted reproductive technology (ART) have made it possible for these patients to become biological fathers. METHODS: Data were examined for all male CF patients attending a large adult CF center over a 23-year period. Azoospermia was confirmed via laboratory analysis of semen and was defined as complete absence of sperm in the ejaculate. Outcome of surgical sperm retrieval (SSR) procedure, post SSR complications, success rate of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and embryo transfer and subsequent live b

Parental status and gender are associated with differences in Tdap vaccination rates among United States adults.

Professional societies recommend all caregivers of neonates be vaccinated to Tdap to prevent neonatal pertussis. Limited data exist as to whether parents, including female parents (i.e. mothers) and male parents (i.e. fathers), are compliant with Tdap recommendations. We utilized individual-level self-reported Tdap vaccination information from the 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BFRSS) to assess the extent to which parental status was associated with Tdap vaccination status. Among reproductive age individuals (19-49 years old) with known parental status, only 28 % had Tdap vac
