BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To perform a review of the literature comparing the safety of bilateral simultaneous lensectomies in children versus the risk of more than one general anesthesia within a short time frame, and to study the results of bilateral surgery in a small group of patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Bilateral simultaneous lensectomies were performed in 9 children (18 eyes), in whom increased anesthetic risks warranted this approach.
RESULTS: There were no postoperative complications for at least 6 months.

To determine the value of "Low Back Pain Rating Scale" as a postal questionnaire, a retrospective study was undertaken of patients who had undergone first-time lumbar disc surgery 14-72 months previously. This study evaluates the role of intraocular lens exchange procedures in the management of major implant-related complications. Medical records of 30 patients undergoing intraocular lens exchange at the Leeds General Infirmary from 1 January 1984 to 30 November 1991 were reviewed. Details of their primary implantation surgery, intervening ophthalmic history, lens exchange surgery and outcome were analysed. Follow-up ranged from 3 to 210 weeks. During the period 1966-1985, 66 patients were submitted for curative treatment of a carcinoma of the base of the tongue in the Netherlands Cancer Institute. Treatment consisted of radiotherapy (59 patients), surgery and post-operative radiotherapy (4 patients) and surgery alone (3 patients). We present a retrospective study on 610 patients with colorectal cancer diagnosed over a 10 year period; 21 patients (3.4%) had synchronous multiple primary carcinomas. In 79 patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery the preoperative condition of the popliteal vein valves was assessed by Doppler ultrasonography. Presence of postoperative deep vein thrombosis was determined by bilateral ascending phlebography seven to ten days after surgery. We report our experience of spinal anesthesia using pethidine at doses of 1 ml/5 kg applied to the surgery of the vesico-vaginal fistulas in the african woman. The sensitive block lasts 80.5 +/- 15.5 min. at its maximal block stage and its recovery lasts 25.6 +/- 12.6 min. BACKGROUND: Sex differences in infective endocarditis (IE) remain underexplored in large-scale studies. Current findings on clinical outcomes, particularly in surgical IE, are inconsistent, highlighting critical knowledge gaps.
METHODS: We conducted a nationwide cohort study using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (2001-2022) and a total of 28 976 adults with IE were identified. Subgroup analysis focused on 4133 patients undergoing valve surgery. Primary outcomes included in-hospital mortality and long-term survival, analyzed using logistic regression and Cox models.
