Management of Scaphoid Nonunion (SNU) With Ilizarov Ring Fixator Using Two Olive Wire Compression Without Bone Grafting: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND: The scaphoid is the most commonly fractured bone among the carpal bones seen in orthopedic practice. The majority have good favorable prognosis, but some develop nonunion of fracture despite optimal treatment, which can lead to further complications if left untreated. It is recommended that displaced scaphoid nonunions (SNUs) should be reduced and fixed to prevent degenerative changes from occurring, even if they are asymptomatic. Many treatments have been described, from a percutaneous fixation with a k-wire or screw to open reduction and internal fixation with or without bone gra

Bone plate fixation ability on the dorsal and lateral sides of a metacarpal shaft transverse fracture.

BACKGROUND: Metacarpal shaft fractures are a common hand trauma. The current surgical fixation options for such fractures include percutaneous Kirschner wire pinning and nonlocking and locking plate fixation. Although bone plate fixation, compared with Kirschner wire pinning, has superior fixation ability, a consensus has not been reached on whether the bone plate is better placed on the dorsal or lateral side. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fixation of locking and regular bone plates on the dorsal and lateral sides of a metacarpal shaft fracture. MATERIALS AND METH

Single Injection AAV2-FGF18 Gene Therapy Reduces Cartilage Loss and Subchondral Bone Damage in a Mechanically Induced Model of Osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a highly debilitating, degenerative pathology of cartilaginous joints affecting over 500 million people worldwide. The global economic burden of OA is estimated at $260-519 billion and growing, driven by aging global population and increasing rates of obesity. To date, only the multi-injection chondroanabolic treatment regimen of Fibroblast Growth Factor 18 (FGF18) has demonstrated clinically meaningful disease-modifying efficacy in placebo-controlled human trials. Our work focuses on the development of a novel single injection disease-modifying gene therapy,

Locking plate fixation combined with iliac crest bone autologous graft for proximal humerus comminuted fracture.

BACKGROUND: Although the use of an intramedullary fibular allograft together with locking plate fixation can provide additional medial support and prevent varus malalignment in displaced proximal humeral fractures with promising results, the fibular autograft donor site often sustains significant trauma and cannot restore the articular surface of comminuted fractures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of a locking plate and crest bone autologous graft for treating proximal humerus comminuted fractures. METHODS: We assessed the functional outcomes and

99mTc-sestamibi imaging and bone marrow karyotyping in the assessment of multiple myeloma and MGUS.

AIM: The first pathogenetic step in multiple myeloma is the emergence of a limited number of clonal plasma cells, clinically known as monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). Patients with MGUS do not have symptoms or end-organ damage but they do have a 1% annual risk of progression to multiple myeloma or related malignant disorders. With progression of MGUS to multiple myeloma, complex genetic events occur in the neoplastic plasma cell. Karyotyping and fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) were shown to be of prognostic value in patients with multiple myeloma. Tc-sestami

Geometry and cell density of rat craniofacial sutures during early postnatal development and upon in vivo cyclic loading.

Cranial sutures are unique to skull bones and consist of multiple connective tissue cell lineages such as mesenchymal cells, fibroblast-like cells, and osteogenic cells, in addition to osteoclasts. Mechanical modulation of intramembranous bone growth in the craniofacial suture is not well understood, especially during postnatal development. This study investigated whether in vivo mechanical forces regulate sutural growth responses in postnatal rats. Cyclic compressive forces with a peak-to-peak magnitude of 300 mN and 4 Hz were applied to the maxilla in each of 17-, 23-and 32-day-old rats for

Biological effects of aluminum on normal dogs: studies on the isolated perfused bone.

Although it is well known that aluminum (Al) plays a role in the development of osteomalacia in patients with chronic renal failure, the mechanisms are not fully understood. Since the osteoblasts are the cells responsible for the formation of osteoid tissue, which is greatly affected in patients with Al-induced osteomalacia, it is possible that Al could affect the number of osteoblasts or interfere with their function. To further characterize this potential mechanism, we performed studies in isolated perfused tibiae from normal and Al-treated dogs. In this system, when PTH is added to the perf

The expression characteristics of miR-206-3p in musculoskeletal tissue and its clinical significance.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Osteosarcopenia, a comorbidity of osteoporosis and sarcopenia in the elderly, involves bone-muscle crosstalk, but its core molecular mechanism remains unclear. miR-206 is traditionally considered muscle-specific; this study explores miR-206-3p's expression in musculoskeletal tissue and correlation with clinical parameters. METHODS: A prospective cohort of 158 elderly hip fracture patients (79 osteosarcopenia, 79 controls) was enrolled. qRT-PCR, in situ hybridization, and scRNA-seq were used to analyze miR-206-3p's expression, distribution, and cell specificity.
