Several lines of evidence suggest that deficiency of eosinophils is not associated with any characteristic abnormality. Patients lacking eosinophils, in the setting of immunodeficiency or as a consequence of IgG-mediated eosinophil precursor destruction, do not display any distinguishing abnormalities related to eosinophil reduction. The observation that eosinophil-deficient mice do not display any distinctive syndrome or failure of their health is evidence that, under ordinary laboratory conditions, the eosinophil does not play a critical role in the well-being of mammals. Observations that m

This study aimed to analyse changes in the spatial distribution of Lutzomyia longipalpis in Posadas, an urban area located in northeastern Argentina. Data were obtained during the summer of 2007 and 2009 through two entomological surveys of peridomiciles distributed around the city. The abundance distribution pattern for 2009 was computed and compared with the previous pattern obtained in 2007, when the first human visceral leishmaniasis cases were reported in the city. Vector abundance was also examined in relation to micro and macrohabitat characteristics. In 2007 and 2009, Lu. longipalpis w

Age is a common risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Because of the increasing age of the population, these two age-related diseases have recently received a great deal of attention. In addition to age as a risk factor, AD and AMD have many characteristics in common. An important characteristic common to both diseases is the presence of amyloid β (Aβ) in the senile plaques of the AD brain and in the drusen of AMD patients. We have focused on the role of Aβ as a key regulator of the progression from drusen to AMD, and our results have shown that A

CT myelography of the T11-L2 region was performed in 8 large-breed dogs with a clinical diagnosis of degenerative myelopathy (DM) and 3 large-breed dogs that were clinically normal. CT myelographic characteristics were recorded for each dog, at each disc level. Area measurements of the spinal cord, dural sac, vertebral canal, and vertebral body were recorded at 4 slice locations for each disc level. Mean area ratios were calculated and graphically compared, by slice location and group. In all dogs, CT myelography identified morphologic abnormalities that were not suspected from conventional my

Cartilage allotransplantation has been employed for years as an effective remedy for cartilage-related disorders. The storage conditions and duration play a critical role in preserving the quality of fresh human nasal allografts. In this study, human nasal cartilages were stored in a designated medium for 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 weeks at 4 °C, and their cell viability, biomechanical properties, structural integrity, and sterility were evaluated. Cell viability remained over 70% for a duration of 12 weeks with only a gradual decline over time. Throughout the duration of the experiment, no microb

Endocasts are casts of the internal surface of skull bones created by the brain and surrounding tissues. These fossil phantoms provide the most direct evidence of the brains of extinct organisms, and are one of the many puzzle pieces that help paleoneurologists reconstruct brain evolution. The recent discovery of a small-brained, recently-extinct human species, Homo naledi, creates a timely opportunity to review what endocasts can and cannot tell us about ancient brains. We first review published evidence about the brain and behavior of H. naledi, including the suggestion that the species may

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiome has emerged as a potential contributor to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), including atherosclerosis, acute coronary syndrome (ACS), and peripheral arterial disease (PAD). While observational studies link dysbiosis to CVD, causal relationships remain uncertain.
METHODS: This narrative review synthesizes evidence from human observational studies, clinical interventions, and experimental models to distinguish association from mechanistic plausibility and clinical causality. Literature was searched through July 2026 in PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Scopus.

Fexinidazole is a ctirical treatment for Human African trypanosomiasis in Africa, but its metabolic characteristics are not fully understood. This study investigated the impacts of CYP3A4 genetic polymorphisms and (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) on the metabolism of fexinidazole in vitro (rat liver microsomes (RLM), human liver mircosomes (HLM), and nine CYP3A4 variants) and in vivo (rat) models. Ultra performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) was utilized to quantify fexinidazole and its metabolites. The results showed that fexinidazole was metabolized mainly

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a globally prevalent virus that poses a significant public health concern, especially for newborns and immunocompromised patients, causing a wide range of infections. Clinical outcomes associated with HCMV infection include congenital disease, graft rejection in transplant recipients, and life-threatening systemic infections with significant morbidity and mortality. HCMV is a member of the Beta-herpesvirinae subfamily. Distinguishing characteristics of HCMV, in particular, and herpesviruses in general are their ubiquitous presence in nature and the initial infec

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), has recently emerged as a significant global health concern. Latently infected lymphocytes, particularly CD4+ T lymphocytes and macrophages, together with organs that house these cells, serve as reservoirs for HIV. Despite the effectiveness of contemporary antiretroviral therapy (ART) in reducing circulating viral levels, these reservoirs may impede ART access, thereby deactivating latency-reversing agents and antibodies. A detailed comprehension of HIV reservoir sites in tissues is essential, as antir

Despite many efforts to understand the molecular mechanisms of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) treatment resistance, there is still no reliable method for selecting patients who could benefit from standard pharmacological treatment. Here, four PDAC patient-derived xenografts (PDAC-PDXs) with different responses to gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel (nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel) were studied to dissect the contribution of both tumor and host microenvironment to treatment response. PDAC-PDXs transplanted into the pancreas of immunodeficient mice retained the main genetic and histo

We previously described our initial efforts to develop a model for small cell lung cancer (SCLC) derived from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) that were differentiated to form pulmonary neuroendocrine cells (PNECs), a putative cell of origin for neuroendocrine-positive SCLC. Although reduced expression of the tumor suppressor genes TP53 and RB1 allowed the induced PNECs to form subcutaneous growths in immune-deficient mice, the tumors did not display the aggressive characteristics of SCLC seen in human patients. Here, we report that the additional, doxycycline-regulated expression of a trans

The existing etiological studies of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) mainly focus on genetics, environment, immunity and gut microbiota (GM). Interestingly, this review found that the first three causes are not separate, but closely related to GM. First, the genetic characteristics of GM are closely related to the pathogenesis of IBD, and multiple human genomic loci (such as LCT and ABO) have been identified to affect GM changes and increase the risk of IBD. Secondly, the composition of GM is directly related to the environment at birth. With the growth of human beings, environmental factors s

Liver tissue-resident memory T (TRM) cells play a pivotal role in hepatic immune responses. Their unique residence within liver sinusoids allow continuous antigen surveillance. In this review, we highlight the role of liver TRM cells in protective immunity and disease pathology. Comparisons between human and murine liver TRM cells reveal species-specific characteristics, suggesting the need for human-focused studies. One key finding is the involvement of liver TRM cells in viral hepatitis, where they can both control infection and contribute to liver damage. Liver TRM cells also exhibit dual r

Zoonotic opportunistic enteric protozoa represent a significant global health threat to immunocompromised populations, especially individuals with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Despite China's severe HIV burden, molecular epidemiological data on enteric protozoa remain limited in this population. In this study, we investigated the occurrence and molecular characteristics of Cryptosporidium species, Giardia duodenalis, and Enterocytozoon bieneusi among 150 AIDS patients with severe immunodeficiency in Wuhan city, Hubei Province, China. The overall test-positive rate was 5.33% (8/150), com

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and their secretome have significant potential in promoting hair follicle development. However, the effects of MSC therapy have been reported to vary due to their heterogeneous characteristics. Different sources of MSCs or culture systems may cause heterogeneity of exosomes.

Somatic variants in the ZFX gene have been found in human sporadic parathyroid adenomas. This gene encodes a transcriptional factor recently described as a transcriptional activator in multiple types of human tumors. We present the clinical and molecular characterization of three patients diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) who have germline variants in the ZFX gene. The first patient had a pathogenic missense variant (c.2321A > G; p.(Tyr774Cys)) in the heterozygous state. This patient exhibited PHPT along with ear, nose and forehead abnormalities. Additionally, she presented oth

Two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) cell models derived from human stem cells have shed light on a wide range of molecular and cellular features of Huntington's disease (HD). Here we review the use of human stem cell-derived models to explore neurodevelopmental contributions to HD. We provide a timeline of key advances made in 2D and 3D model systems, ranging from differentiated monocultures to brain-like organoids and assembloids. Models along this spectrum have advanced our understanding of various disease-associated characteristics including disease protein (huntingtin) aggregation, soma

OBJECTIVE: Human leptospirosis is an endemic disease in northern Iran. residents of northern provinces are at increased risk of exposure to Leptospira due to the region's unique geographical characteristics, occupational patterns, cultural practices, lifestyle, and recreational activities, all of which contribute to the higher burden of the disease in this area. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the epidemiological patterns of leptospirosis in Babol County over six years (2019-2024).
RESULTS: During the study period, 344 cases of human leptospirosis were reported. Of these, 86.0% occurre

The gut microbiota residing in the distal ileum and colon is the most complex, diverse, and densest microbial ecosystem in the human body. Despite its known role in human health and disease, gut microbiome diversity and function are rarely explored in vulnerable populations such as refugees. The current study aimed to explore gut microbiota diversity and sources of variation among adolescent Afghan refugees residing in Peshawar, Pakistan. Stool samples were collected from 10 - 18 years old, healthy adolescents (n=205) for 16S rRNA gene sequence (V4-V5 hypervariable region) analysis on isolated
