OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: The factors controlling the preventive effect of long-term amiodarone therapy were evaluated in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. The 55 patients (37 men and 18 women, mean age 68 +/- 9 years) with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation refractory to more than two types of Class I antiarrhythmic agents received amiodarone (100-200mg/day) after electrical or pharmacological cardioversion. A disturbingly high prevalence of single or bilateral lower extremity amputations in our program prompted us to conduct a study to identify the prevalence of risk factors that predispose patients on hemodialysis (HD) to foot problems. OBJECTIVE: The phenotypic expression of partial lipodystrophy is present in two familial syndromes: familial partial lipodystrophy type 1 (FPLD1), with fat loss from the extremities, and central obesity and FPLD type 2, with fat loss from the extremities, abdomen, and thorax. BACKGROUND: Acute pancreatitis is a severe disease with considerable morbidity and mortality. Gallstones and alcohol abuse are the most frequent causes (75% of patients). Other well-known causes are: hyperlipidemia, hypercalcaemia, abdominal surgery and drugs. In 10%-40% of patients however, no cause is identified after initial diagnostic evaluation: acute idiopathic pancreatitis. We report a 58-year-old man with slowly progressive muscle atrophy and weakness in the four extremities, accompanying cerebellar ataxia and sensory impairment of all modalities.
