Changes of plasma renin activity (PRA) were studied in 45 patients with renovascular hypertension. Peripheral PRA was assayed by Serebovskaya's modification of Pickens' biological method; in 13 patients it was additionally assayed in blood samples taken from both renal veins. Giving an intravenous diuretic during urography (furosemide-augmented urography, vasodilated urography) causes renal swelling which is easily measured. Review of haemodynamic data of 151 cases with isolated aortic valve disease revealed severe pulmonary hypertension (pulmonary arterial systolic pressure of 60 mmHg or more) in 17 (11%). The left ventricular end-diastolic pressure was high in all but one case, suggesting that the severe pulmonary hypertension was a reflection of the late stages of aortic valve disease. The Pneumatonometer of Langham was used to monitor intraocular pressure in the operating theatre and in the early postoperative period after cataract surgery. Both indomethacin and aspirin were shown to prodcue a significant reduction in the acute ocular hypertension which can be expected to follow 6 hours after routine cataract surgery. It is suggested that the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis by these drugs is probably responsible for this effect.

A prospective study was designed to determine the course of ocular hypertension without visual field loss if untreated and to estimate the value of various clinical findings in prediction the course of ocular hypertension. Cyclically fluctuating intracranial pressure (ICP) with periodic breathing was first described by Nils Lundberg in 1960. While Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSR) frequently accompanies severe cerebrovascular accidents, it is not commonly appreciated that cycles of severe intracranial hypertension can complicate this abnormal ventilation pattern. We recently treated a patient with a hemorrhagic stroke in whom episodes of elevated ICP were synchronously associated with CSR.

Systolic time intervals were measured in 54 hypertensive patients divided into three groups according to severity of hypertension, variability of blood pressure levels and presence or absence of a hyperkinetic heart. The three groups were: borderline hypertension (BLH), fixed essential hypertension (FEH) and hyperkinetic essential hypertension (HEH). Systolic time intervals (STI) provided information indicating an increased cardioadrenergic drive in BLH and HEH. This was supported by finding that propranolol abolished the increased contractility found at rest in BLH and HEH.
