Detection of Circulating Tumor Cells by Cell Block Technique in Malignant Tumors.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide and is a major cause of morbidity. To deal with this magnitude of cancers and their diagnostic and prognostics, a multitude of prognostic biomarkers for various cancers have been explored over the decades, with detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in the peripheral blood being one of them. This study was undertaken to explore the routine procedure of cell block in the cytopathology lab to isolate and detect CTCs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 112 peripheral blood samples sent for routine blood investigat

Differences in personality functioning impairment in mood, anxiety, and personality disorders: a cluster analysis.

BACKGROUND: The Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders and the latest eleventh version of the International Classification of Diseases implement the level of impairment in self and interpersonal personality functioning (Level of Personality Functioning Scale - LPFS) as a core feature of personality pathology. However, some studies have indicated that personality functioning is also impaired in other mental disorders, but a more thorough exploration is missing. Thus, this study aims to develop profiles of levels of personality functioning in people with personality disorders and some

Nationwide incidence of central retinal artery occlusion in Japan: an exploratory descriptive study using the National Database of Health Insurance Claims (2011-2015).

AIMS: The latest evidence in the incidence of central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is needed to support the development of novel treatments as orphan drugs. However, up-to-date information on the incidence of CRAO in the ageing or aged population is limited. We aimed to investigate the nationwide epidemiological and clinical characteristics of CRAO in Japan, using nationwide health insurance claims data. METHODS: We analysed a total of 16 069 762 claims data in the sampling dataset of the National Database of Health Insurance Claims and Specific Health Checkups of Japan (NDB), which is the

Clinical Presentation and Outcomes of Children With Human Granulocytic Anaplasmosis.

BACKGROUND: Adults with the tick-borne disease human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) have a spectrum of acute febrile illnesses that, if untreated, might be severe. Clinical presentation and outcomes of children with HGA have been poorly described. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted to determine the frequency, presentation, and outcomes of pediatric patients with HGA between 1994 and 2015 in a region of Wisconsin in which HGA is highly endemic. Patients with related International Classification of Diseases Ninth and Tenth Revision (ICD-9 and ICD-10, respectively) codes or positiv

IDENTIFICATION OF POTENTIAL MARKERS FOR CUSHING DISEASE.

OBJECTIVE: Cushing disease (CD) causes a wide variety of nonspecific symptoms, which may result in delayed diagnosis. It may be possible to uncover unusual combinations of otherwise common symptoms using International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) codes. Our aim was to identify and evaluate dyads of clinical symptoms or conditions associated with CD. METHODS: We conducted a matched case-control study using a commercial healthcare insurance claims database designed to compare the relative risk (RR) of individual conditions and dyad combinations of

How Will the Transition to ICD-10 Affect Urology Coding? An Analysis of ICD-9 Code Use from a Large Group Practice.

INTRODUCTION: On October 1, 2015 the ICD (International Classification of Diseases)-10-CM (10th Revision, Clinical Modification) code set replaced ICD-9 (9th Revision) for coding medical encounters in the United States. The introduction of this unique, expanded code set will change the way medical encounters are coded, and may affect specialties and subspecialists to different degrees. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed evaluating ICD-9 codes used at a large urology group. The most commonly used codes were evaluated in the office and hospital settings, and also from 3 individual su

Accuracy of cancer death certificates in Spain: a summary of available information.

OBJECTIVES: Differences in mortality rates within Europe might be partly due to the quality of mortality statistics. The present article summarizes the available data on the quality of cancer death certification in Spain. A short description of the temporal distribution of the proportion of deaths due to ill-defined tumors in Spain -an indirect indicator of the quality of cancer death certification- is also provided. METHODS: Relevant studies were identified from electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, IME and IBECS) and from manual searches of the references contained in the articles retrieve

Colombian ocular diseases epidemiology study (CODES): glaucoma incidence and sociodemographic characterisation 2015-2020.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Glaucoma encompasses a group of eye diseases that progressively damage the optic nerve, leading to vision loss and blindness. Understanding the incidence and demographic distribution is vital for public health planning and patient care. BACKGROUND: Previous small-scale studies in Colombia have reported the prevalence of glaucoma in individuals over 40 years between 1.1% and 5.29%. These data may not fully capture the true extent of the disease. Furthermore, with the ageing population, the incidence of glaucoma is likely to increase, highlighting the need for up-to-date inc

Genetic basis and molecular profiling in myeloproliferative neoplasms.

BCR::ABL1-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are clonal diseases originating from a single hematopoietic stem cell that cause excessive production of mature blood cells. The 3 subtypes, that is, polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET), and primary myelofibrosis (PMF), are diagnosed according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and international consensus classification (ICC) criteria. Acquired gain-of-function mutations in 1 of 3 disease driver genes (JAK2, CALR, and MPL) are the causative events that can alone initiate and promote MPN disease without requiring addi

End-of-life care in illicit drug users: mapping medication use.

BACKGROUND: While clinical wisdom has long provided suggested guidance around caring for people who use illicit drugs (referred to as PWUD) at the end of life, there is striking paucity of empirical evidence underpinning these practices. Understanding medications and doses required to manage symptoms at the end of life is essential to provide effective end-of-life care for these patients. This study aimed to examine the type and dose of medications prescribed to hospitalised patients who use illicit drugs at the end of life, compared with patients without previous or current illicit drug use.

Incidence and risk factors for umbilical cord prolapse in labor when amniotomy is used and with spontaneous rupture of membranes: A Swedish nationwide register study.

INTRODUCTION: Umbilical cord prolapse (UCP) is a rare but severe obstetric complication in the presence of a rupture of the membranes. Although it is not possible to prevent a spontaneous rupture of the membranes (SROM), it is possible to prevent an amniotomy, which is a commonly used intervention in labor. This study aimed to explore the incidence and risk factors that are associated with UCP in labor when amniotomy is used vs SROM. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective nationwide register study was conducted of all births in Sweden from January 2014 to June 2020 that were included in the Sw
