Social influence, marriage, and the heart: cardiovascular consequences of interpersonal control in husbands and wives.

Human and experimental animal research suggests that social stress in general--and chronic, effortful attempts to exert social control in particular--may contribute to cardiovascular disease. We examined the effects of exerting social influence or control on cardiovascular responses in married couples. Compared to husbands discussing a problem with their wives, husbands attempting to influence or persuade their wives displayed larger increases in systolic blood pressure (SBP) before and during the discussion. Furthermore, these physiological effects were accompanied by increases in anger and a

A psycho-social study on genito-urinary fistula.

This study was done on a series of 132 vesico-vaginal fistula (V.V.F.) cases to assess the social factors that are related to this morbidity and its psycho-social effects on them. About 54% of the respondents developed VVF as an outcome of their first pregnancy and none of them had a living child. Of this 39% were in the age group of 15-20 years. About 68% were illiterate and 22% had received formal education for up to 5 years. Fifty two per cent of the subjects had a family income of up to Tk. 1,000 only per month. Almost all were Muslims (94.7%). Of the respondents 64.6% had home delivery by

Outcome following physical trauma: a comparative approach.

This study aimed to examine physical and psychosocial changes after injury in a range of trauma patients. Three groups were selected for comparison purposes: severely head-injured patients, patients with major trauma, and those with minor trauma (n = 102). Outcomes were assessed by questionnaires and inventories administered to a family member or friend of the trauma survivor, approximately 1 year post-injury. Severely head-injured patients were reported to have the greatest degree of difficulty in self-care and mobility, and in community living skills, followed by other major trauma patients

An examination of the borderline diagnosis in children.

A retrospective study of 86 children aged 6-12 years who had been hospitalized for psychiatric reasons revealed that adult criteria for borderline personality disorder could identify a group of children with many of the features attributed in the literature to the borderline child. The relative paucity of significant differences between the children identified as borderline and those identified as nonborderline raises questions about the validity and utility of the term. Further work is necessary to clarify the meaning of a vulnerability to psychotic regression in the disturbed child and the r

The treatment of extreme shyness in maladjusted children by implosive, counselling and conditioning approaches.

This article deals with the reason why little research has been conducted into the area of timidity or shyness in children, and the effect this has on their socialisation and learning. The study attempts to define and treat the problem of timidity by: reducing anxiety both general and specific; developing greater assertiveness in the child's behaviour; promoting the ability to communicate effectively with other people; discovering and treating the areas which are creating feelings of inadequacy by reducing or eliminating them; investigating parental background and trying to influence this, and

Survivors of the holocaust and their children: current status and adjustment.

A group of 52 concentration camp and other survivors of World War II were compared with a control group of 29 persons of similar European and religious background. Forty-seven children of these survivors and 16 children from the comparison group were also evaluated. The psychological adjustment of both group of adults and their children was within the normal range. Cultural rather than specific survivor influences were noted in the present attitudes and behaviors of the parents. There were no significant differences between the survivor and control group children on any of the psychological va

Nonsomatic treatment of depression.

There is solid evidence that active and goal-oriented cognitive-behavioral or relationship-focused therapies are generally superior to more generic therapies or to no treatment for clinically diagnosed and for undiagnosed but symptomatic youths. Between 50% to 87% of diagnosed youths who received a targeted treatment had recovered from their depressive episodes, in comparison to 21% to 75% of those who received some other generic therapy and 5% to 48% of wait-listed youths. The cognitive behavioral and relationship-oriented interventions that were tested tended to be even more successful in re

Patient experiences of benzodiazepine tapering: a qualitative study of treatment in addiction care.

BACKGROUND: Tapering by gradual dose reduction is a key component of treatment for individuals with addiction to benzodiazepines. Although many patients recover, treatment dropouts and relapses are common. Few studies have explored how benzodiazepine tapering is experienced from the patient perspective. METHODS: This qualitative study involved semi-structured interviews with 19 adults with addiction to benzodiazepines who were undergoing tapering treatment at a publicly funded outpatient addiction clinic. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Participants describ

Multilevel Barriers and Facilitators to HIV Care Engagement Among Virally Unsuppressed People Living With HIV in the U.S. Deep South: A Qualitative Study.

The U.S. South experiences disproportionate HIV-related morbidity and persistently lower viral suppression rates. Achieving Ending the HIV Epidemic goals requires understanding multilevel influences on care engagement among virally unsuppressed people living with HIV. We conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with 30 virally unsuppressed people living with HIV receiving care across Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Guided by the Modified Social Ecological Model, we examined individual, interpersonal, clinic, community, and policy-level factors shaping engagement and antiretroviral therap

Strain transmission links human microbiomes along the oral-gut axis and across cohabiting individuals.

Interpersonal strain transmission shapes the human microbiome, yet a comparative understanding of the transmission dynamics across body sites is lacking. We analyzed 1,644 paired oral and fecal metagenomes to investigate microbiome transmission among healthy cohabitants and intra-individual oral-gut overlap. Cohabitants shared significantly more oral and gut strains than non-cohabitants. Romantic partners exhibited the highest oral strain-sharing rates, exceeding their gut strain sharing. Higher oral transmissibility was associated with increased longitudinal strain replacement, while the most

Trends, disparities, and multilevel interventions: A global review of HPV vaccination among university students.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is a critical yet underutilized strategy for preventing HPV-related cancers in young adults. University students represent a key demographic for catch-up vaccination owing to their risk profile and transitional healthcare access. This review synthesized data from January 2015 to February 2026 to examine the trends, disparities, and determinants of HPV vaccine uptake in this population. Vaccination rates remain suboptimal worldwide, with pronounced disparities across sex, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and geographic regions. Key barriers operate at

Closer People Hurt You More: How Social Distance Modulates Deception-Triggered Trust Decline and Trust Repair.

Close relationships generally help foster and sustain interpersonal trust, but also intensify harm when trust is violated by deception. Based on Expectancy Violation Theory and Decision System Theory, this study explored how social distance moderates the impact of deception on trust through three experiments. In Study 1 (N = 86), deception by acquaintances (vs. strangers) resulted in a higher decline in trust. Building on this, Study 2 (N = 202) further examined mediating mechanisms, indicating that the deception of acquaintances reduces trust more by causing negative emotions, while deception

Atypical Neural Plasticity and Behavioral Effects of Trustworthiness Learning in Borderline Personality Disorder Features.

This study distinguishes interpersonal trust learning with a novel trust learning paradigm in participants high (H-BPD) and low (L-BPD) in BPD features. Neutral faces were paired with trust-relevant behaviors in four conditions: trustworthy, untrustworthy, ambiguously trustworthy, and mixed trustworthiness. After training, participants rated faces on untrustworthiness as electroencephalographic measures were recorded. H-BPD rated neutral faces as significantly more untrustworthy than L-BPD at both time periods. Negative and ambiguous trustworthiness pairing conditions led to higher ratings of

Examining the Intersection of Housing Instability and Violence Among LGBTQ Adults.

To assess the relationship between LGBTQ status and (1) current, recent, and lifetime experiences of housing instability, (2) risk of housing instability due to fears of interpersonal violence, and (3) perceived housing challenges, this study examined online survey data from individuals with a household income <$35,000 (N = 1,270). Analyses compared LGBTQ and cisgender heterosexual respondents using chi-square tests and logistic regression. Over their lifetime, LGBTQ respondents had increased odds of sleeping outdoors (adjusted odds ratios [AOR] = 1.580) or in a car (AOR = 1.465) because they

Social Support and Subjective Health in Fibromyalgia: Self-Compassion as a Mediator.

Individuals with fibromyalgia report lower levels of health-related quality of life (HRQL) compared to other chronically ill populations and interpersonal factors (i.e., social support) may influence risk. What is less understood is how intrapersonal factors (i.e., self-compassion) may impact the social support-HRQL linkage. We examined the association between social support and HRQL in a sample of persons with fibromyalgia and tested the potential mediating role of self-compassion. Self-identified adults in the United States with fibromyalgia (N = 508) were recruited from state, regional, and
