BACKGROUND: Maternal micronutrient deficiencies are widespread in Pakistan and are potentially associated with maternal undernutrition and intrauterine growth retardation. Intervention strategies largely consist of administration of iron-folic acid supplements during pregnancy.
OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the acceptability of multiple micronutrient supplementation and its potential benefits on pregnancy outcomes and maternal micronutrient status in a cohort of pregnant women in rural and urban Sindh through a cluster-randomized design.
METHODS: We randomly assigned 2378 pregnant women to receive

A female patient in her 80s presented with chronic iron-deficiency anaemia secondary to gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE), despite repeated endoscopic treatment. Her medical history was notable for chronic myeloid leukaemia, for which she took imatinib. Due to a possible association between imatinib and GAVE described in a small number of case reports, cessation of imatinib was trialled. This led to a significant improvement in the patient's anaemia and resolution of GAVE on repeat endoscopy. GAVE is an uncommon cause of gastrointestinal bleeding, the aetiology of which is uncertain. This

There are numerous causes of iron deficiency anemia due to gastrointestinal tract bleeding in children. While a very thorough history may elucidate common etiologies, such as cow's milk protein-induced colitis and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-related gastritis or peptic ulcer disease, other less frequent causes often present a diagnostic challenge. We present the MR enterography (MRE), CT and Meckel scan findings of ileal dysgenesis coexisting with multiple enteric duplication cysts in a young child who presented with chronic iron deficiency anemia, recurrent gastrointestinal tract blee

Since the discovery of Helicobacter pylory (H. pylori), several studies have been published concerning a hypothetical role of this bacterium in different extragastric diseases, such as ischemic heart disease, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, iron deficiency anemia or other disorders. The majority of those studies may be classified as epidemiological or eradicating trials but there are also case reports or in vitro studies. Idiopathic thromobocytopenic purpura represents the disease showing a stronger link with H. pylori infection. There are also increasing evidences on the role of H. pylor

Of 152 consecutive patients with carcinoma of the right colon, 61 (40 per cent) suffered delays in treatment of more than 12 weeks from the onset of symptoms, with a mean delay of 48 weeks. The most common error was failure to initiate or complete the investigation of iron-deficiency anaemia (33 patients). False-negative barium enema investigations occurred in 16 cases. Patients with delays in diagnosis had survival rates not significantly different from those who presented early. Thirty-one patients with anaemia and no abdominal symptoms had a significantly higher survival rate than 30 presen

AbstractIron deficiency is common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Contemporary guidelines recommend the use of iron therapy only in the presence of anemia. However, patients with CKD are at increased risk of heart failure, and the coexistence of both conditions is associated with impaired quality of life, reduced physical function, and increased mortality compared with either condition alone. In this Tomorrow's Trial article, we review current evidence for intravenous iron in CKD and heart failure and propose the design of a randomized trial of intravenous iron, independent of h

Nutrition is the source of energy that is required to carry out all the processes of human body. A balanced diet is a combination of both macro- and micronutrients. "Nutritional inadequacy" involves an intake of nutrients that is lower than the estimated average requirement, whereas "nutritional deficiency" consists of severely reduced levels of one or more nutrients, making the body unable to normally perform its functions and thus leading to an increased risk of several diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Malnutrition could be caused by environmental factors, like food scarcit

Vegetarian diets are booming and, although these diets have been linked to some health benefits, the low bioavailability of some micronutrients in plant foods may result in risk of nutritional deficiencies, which makes necessary adequate planning of these diets. In this regard, vitamin B12 deficiency in vegetarians has been evidenced and there is a consensus on the need of supplementation of this vitamin. Vitamin D deficiency may be more frequent than in omnivores, particularly during the winter, when skin synthesis is minimal. The low bioavailability of iron, zinc and selenium in vegetables c

The Bedouins living in southern Israel are a Muslim-Arab population that is transitioning from a nomadic lifestyle to life in permanent settlements. The population has unique characteristics that could affect hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) measurements. The objective of this study was to describe the socio-demographic and unique morbidity characteristics of this community and their effect on HbA1c measurements. Consanguinity, especially among cousins in the Bedouin population, results in a high prevalence of autosomal recessive genetic diseases such as thalassemia (underestimate of HbA1c), hemoglobino

Although >50% of U.S. adults use dietary supplements, little information is available on the impact of supplement use frequency on nutrient intakes and deficiencies. Based on nationally representative data in 10,698 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) 2009 to 2012, assessments were made of intakes from food alone versus food plus multi-vitamin/multi-mineral supplements (MVMS) of 17 nutrients with an Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) and a Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL), and of the status of five nutrients with recognized biomarkers of deficiency. This communication was designed to determine the intake of food products and nutrients in randomly selected manual workers (women) of the textile industry, as well as to quantitatively evaluate the deficiency or excess of nutrients in their average diet. Daily nutrition was evaluated in 300 females, manual workers aged 35-44 years. Rheir nutrition was assessed by the method of a questionnaire concerning food intake during 24 h prior to the inquiry. As a result, the kind of nutrition was determined. Moreover, the nutritive value of the daily food rations, as well as the intake of the different

BACKGROUND: Insufficient iron is a common nutritional deficiency globally. It is a significant cause of anemia in pregnancy and a common problem in obstetric care due to the increased demand for iron by the developing fetus and placenta. It has been associated with adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes. To maintain iron balance, maternal iron stores before and during pregnancy have been suggested to be an indispensable factor. However, there is no consensus on the effect of iron stores in mothers on neonatal iron stores.
AIM: To establish the relationship between maternal iron stores in pre

The purpose of this study was: 1) to establish the prevalence of depleted iron stores, iron deficiency, and low serum levels for copper, zinc, calcium, and magnesium in a healthy female population; and 2) to examine the effects of iron supplementation and discontinuation on the serum levels of the above minerals. One hundred eleven healthy women between the ages of 18 and 40 yr reported for fasted morning blood sampling for iron, copper, zinc, calcium, and magnesium status. Forty-five subjects were either iron-deficient as defined by a hemoglobin level below 120 g.l-1 (four subjects) or iron d

BACKGROUND: Obesity and excess body weight are significant epidemiological issues, not only because they are costly to treat, but also because they are among the leading causes of death worldwide. In 2016, an estimated 40% of the global population was overweight, reflecting the importance of the issue. Obesity is linked to metabolism malfunction and concomitantly with altered mineral levels in the body. In this paper, we review alterations in somatic levels of iron, calcium, magnesium, copper, iodine, chromium, selenium, and zinc in relation to excess body mass.

Iron deficiency anemia in children is commonly managed with oral iron supplements, but liquid formulations are often associated with undesirable tooth staining. This in vitro study evaluated enamel discoloration on primary teeth after exposure to ferrous sulfate and iron polymaltose complex. Sixty extracted primary anterior teeth were divided into three groups and immersed daily for 21 days; with color change measured using a spectrophotometer and stereomicroscopy. Ferrous sulfate caused the highest degree of staining (ΔE = 12.6), followed by iron polymaltose (ΔE = 6.3), while controls showed

BACKGROUND: Multicellular organisms regulate the uptake of calories, trace elements, and other nutrients by complex feedback mechanisms. In the case of iron, the body senses internal iron stores, iron requirements for hematopoiesis, and inflammatory status, and regulates iron uptake by modulating the uptake of dietary iron from the intestine. Both the liver and the intestine participate in the coordination of iron uptake and distribution in the body. The liver senses inflammatory signals and iron status of the organism and secretes a peptide hormone, hepcidin. Under high iron or inflammatory c

Iron is a crucial micronutrient for plants, but its availability in soil is often limited. Iron deficiency compromises plant growth, and low iron content in crops contributes substantially to the 'hidden hunger' that affects human health globally. The elucidation of Strategy I (reduction-based) and Strategy II (phytosiderophore-based) for iron acquisition was a milestone in plant biology and enabled the development of biofortification concepts. However, recent genetic evidence reveals that the boundary between the two strategies is blurred, with many plants possessing elements of both. Here we

Iron is an essential element for all eukaryotes, since it acts as a cofactor for many enzymes involved in basic cellular functions, including translation. While the mammalian iron-regulatory protein/iron-responsive element (IRP/IRE) system arose as one of the first examples of translational regulation in higher eukaryotes, little is known about the contribution of iron itself to the different stages of eukaryotic translation. In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, iron deficiency provokes a global impairment of translation at the initiation step, which is mediated by the Gcn2-eIF2α pathway, wh

The objective of the present study was to investigate physiological effects of a marginal copper and iron supply on pigs. Therefore an experiment was conducted with 4 x 12 growing pigs of the crossbreed Pietrain x Deutsche Landrasse. The animals were fed for a period of 119 days with a diet poor of copper (1.5 mg Cu/kg diet) and/or poor of iron (35 mg Fe/kg diet). Control animals were supplied adequately with copper (4.8 mg Cu/kg diet) and iron (85 mg Fe/kg diet). The diet was given according to weight. After reaching an average weight of 102.6 +/- 3.5 kg the animals were slaughtered. Due to t

Autoimmune gastritis is an organ-specific autoimmune disease of the stomach associated with pernicious anemia. The previous work from us and other groups identified MCPIP1 as an essential factor controlling inflammation and immune homeostasis. MCPIP1(-/-) developed severe anemia. However, the mechanisms underlying this phenotype remain unclear. In the present study, we found that MCPIP1 deficiency in mice resulted in severe anemia related to autoimmune mechanisms. Although MCPIP1 deficiency did not affect erythropoiesis per se, the erythropoiesis in MCPIP1(-/-) bone marrow erythroblasts was si
