A proven case of human infection caused by Angiostrongylus costaricensis is reported for the first time in Venezuela. The patient was a 57-year-old female surgically operated because of signs of peritonitis with a palpable mass at the lower right quadrant of the abdomen. BACKGROUND: Bezoars usually present as a mass in the stomach. The patient often has a preceding history of some psychiatric predisposition. Presentation could be in the form of trichophagy followed by trichobezoar (swallowing of hair leading to formation of bezoar), orphytobezoar (swallowing of vegetable fibres). Rapunzel syndrome is a condition where the parent bezoar is in the stomach and a tail of the fibres or hair extends in to the jejunum. Presentation as intestinal obstruction due to a bezoar in the intestine without a parent bezoar in the stomach is rare, therefore we report it here.

We present the case of a 50-year old patient, operated on for three adjoining annular strictures in the jejunum with proximal dilatation. He presented with a one-year history of recurrent cramping in the upper abdomen and vomiting, with two episodes of intestinal obstruction. Using the ODS rat (genotype od/od) as a model, we investigated the effect of ascorbic acid deficiency on the expression of the apolipoprotein A-I gene. Male ODS rats (7 wk old, body weight approximately 140 g) were fed a basal diet containing ascorbic acid (300 mg/kg) or a diet without ascorbic acid for 14 d. Ascorbic acid deficiency lowered the serum apolipoprotein A-I concentration. The authors report their experience with transhiatal esophageal resection accumulated during the period between January 1978 and March 1990. Indications for the procedure included cancer of the gastric cardia (26.3%), cancer of the hypopharynx (3.8%), cancer of the esophagus (59.2%), and benign esophageal disease (9.8%). Phytobezoars are composed of fruit or vegetable matter, including seeds, nuts, and pits, and are the most common type of bezoar associated with gastrointestinal obstruction. Eleven gastrointestinal phytobezoar in children (less than 15 years old) seen within a period of 8 years (1981-1988) were analysed. Six were boys and 5 were girls. On history, 6 patients developed symptoms after ingestion of persimmon. All cases except one occurred in late fall and winter.
