Cauda equina syndrome secondary to intradural renal cell carcinoma metastasis haemorrhage.

Intradural renal cell carcinoma (RCC) metastasis is rare. We report a case of an 81-year-old female presenting with acute cauda equina syndrome (CES), secondary to intradural RCC metastasis haemorrhage. To our knowledge this is the first case of CES secondary to acute haemorrhage within an intradural RCC metastasis.

Pneumothorax in a female with renal angiomyolipoma.

Spontaneous pneumothorax occurs less in females than in males, in contrast to the relatively more commonly and incidentally found renal angiomyolipoma (AML). We report a renal AML in a 23-year-old female patient, which presented as right palpable abdominal mass. This renal tumor was removed owing to enlargement and internal hemorrhage and AML was proved by pathological examination. Three years later, she experienced a life-threatening spontaneous tension pneumothorax and pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), which was diagnosed by chest computed tomography. Clinically, she did not have tub

Robotic nephroureterectomy with partial duodenectomy for invasive ureteral tumor.

Robotic surgery is gaining acceptance in the management of diverse urological disorders. Any minimally invasive procedure carries a risk of open conversion either for complications or unexpected intraoperative findings, but the additional dexterity of robotic instrumentation may allow even complex situations to be managed laparoscopically. We report the case of an upper tract transitional cell carcinoma discovered at the time of robotic nephroureterectomy to be invading the duodenum that was successfully excised robotically.

[Primary neuroectodermal tumour of the kidney invading the wall of the inferior vena cava. Surgical strategy].

Primary neuroectodermal tumours (PNET) are very aggressive malignant tumours, rapidly progressing to metastasis and death. They rarely involve the kidney, as only 23 cases have been described in the literature. Renal tumours, regardless of their histology, spread to the inferior vena cava (IVC) in 4% to 10% of cases. Invasion of the inferior vena cava wall by tumour thrombus is rare and, when it occurs, is often limited to the ostium of the renal vein. The authors report a case of primary neuroectodermal tumour of the kidney with thrombus in the inferior vena cava ascending to the right atrium

[Bilateral pheochromocytomas and asynchronous bilateral renal cell carcinomas associated with von Hippel-Lindau disease: a case report].

A 38-year-old man who had been followed with diagnosis of dilated cardiomyopathy and retinal angioma was referred to our hospital because of incidentally detected bilateral adrenal masses. Although he was normotensive, levels of catecholamine in urine were elevated and I131-MIBG scintigraphy showed accumulation in bilateral adrenal glands. Screening of central nervous system by MRI revealed cerebellar hemangioblastoma. Right adrenalectomy and left partial adrenalectomy were performed, both of which tumors pathologically diagnosed as pheochromocytoma, followed by resection of the cerebellar hem

[Spontaneous peripelvic urine extravasation associated with ileocecal cancer: a case report].

A case of spontaneous peripelvic extravasation with ileocecal cancer is reported. A 60-year-old man with right flank pain was referred to our department. Dripinfusion pyelography showed right peripelvic extravasation. Neither computed tomography (CT) nor retrograde pyelography revealed any ureteral stones or tumors. Urinary cytology was negative. One month later, right retrograde pyelography demonstrated the filling defect in the right ureter, but no stones, ureteral tumors or other tumors related to the ureter were detected by CT. An exploratory laparotomy was done. We found an ileocecal tumo

Renal fossa recurrence of a renal cell carcinoma 13 years after nephrectomy: a case report.

Between 1980 and 1995, we performed a nephrectomy with curative intent on 183 patients with renal cell carcinoma at Nagoya University Hospital. Among these patients, 5 (2.7%) developed renal fossa recurrence (median follow-up, 65 months). We report a case of such a recurrence found 13 years after a nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma (stage pT3a, pN0, M0). A 62-year-old female presented with a nodule on her back. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass in the right back and retroperitoneum, and a biopsy revealed the tumor to be a renal cell carcinoma. Complete resec

Synchronous and metachronous contralateral adrenal metastases from primary renal cell carcinoma.

Two rare cases of contralateral adrenal metastases are reported. One with a synchronous presentation where the renal tumor was removed together with a solitary large contralateral adrenal metastasis. The second patient underwent adrenalectomy for a metastatic lesion diagnosed 4 years after nephrectomy performed for renal cell carcinoma of the contralateral kidney. Five years following the adrenalectomy the patient underwent leg amputation because of a solitary bone metastasis.

[A malignant rhabdoid tumor appearing simultaneously in the kidney and the brain of an infant: case report].

A 6-month-old female was admitted to the hospital with bad temper and decreased sucking power. CT scans revealed tumors in her right kidney and left cerebellum. The patient underwent right radical nephrectomy to excise the kidney tumor. The pathological diagnosis was malignant rhabdoid tumor (MRT). Seven days later, the patient underwent left suboccipital craniectomy for total excision of the cerebellar tumor. The cerebellar tumor existed extraaxially, and consisted of a solid mass lesion and a cystic lesion. Histological examination revealed that it was also a malignant rhabdoid tumor. A foll

Burkitt's lymphoma with mandible, intra-abdominal and renal involvement--initial presentation of HIV infection in a 4-year-old child.

Burkitt's lymphoma of the jaw was first described as a jaw tumor occurring endemically in African children. We report a case of Burkitt's lymphoma in a child presenting with a painful jaw mass which proved to be Burkitt's lymphoma; renal involvement was also noted. The child was found to be HIV positive. Burkitt's may be the initial manifestation of HIV infection in the pediatric population.

Effect of dietary protein on N-nitrosobis(2-oxopropyl)amine-induced carcinogenesis and on spontaneous diseases in Syrian golden hamsters.

For assessment of the effect of dietary protein on spontaneous diseases and on the carcinogenicity of N-nitrosobis(2-oxopropyl)amine [(BOP) CAS: 60599-38-4], Syrian golden hamsters were fed either low protein (LP; 9% casein), medium protein (MP; 18% casein), or high protein (HP; 36% casein) in a diet containing a medium fat (corn oil) level. The experimental design permitted distinguishing between the effects of protein levels on initiation and development of various lesions in hamsters, in comparison with a control group that was given MP diet for life. When fed after BOP treatment, HP diet i

[Ultrasonic diagnosis of renal lymphoma in children. A series of 18 cases].

Ultrasound tomography imaging is a very effective diagnostic examination for lymphoma of the kidneys, organs which are frequently the site of these tumors (51,5% of cases). A total of 18 cases of renal lymphoma explored by ultrasound tomography over the last 2 years were reviewed, the first patients seen in this series also undergoing intravenous urography and two others a CT scan. In most cases diagnosis from ultrasound imaging was based on findings typical of renal lymphoma and on the almost constant detection of other parenchymatous localizations (liver, spleen, pancreas) or lymph node and/

The Probability of Aggressive Versus Indolent Histology Based on Renal Tumor Size: Implications for Surveillance and Treatment.

BACKGROUND: While the probability of malignant versus benign histology based on renal tumor size has been described, this alone does not sufficiently inform decision-making in the modern era since indolent malignant tumors can be managed with active surveillance. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the probability of aggressive versus indolent histology based on radiographic tumor size. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We evaluated patients who underwent radical or partial nephrectomy at Mayo Clinic for a pT1-2, pNx/0, M0 solid renal tumor between 1990 and 2010. Pathology was reviewed by one genito
