We reviewed 72 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens with abnormal hematopoietic cells and the clinical records of the 45 patients from whom they were obtained. Of the 72 specimens, 34 were originally diagnosed as positive for lymphoma or leukemia and the remaining 38 as "atypical cells present." Based on follow-up information of the patients, only three "atypical" specimens were from patients with CSF leukemia, but ten of the positive diagnoses were incorrect. We serially assessed the hearing sensitivity of 61 children with acute lymphocytic leukemia who were admitted to our Total Therapy IX study between December, 1975, and July, 1977. Lactic acidosis or hypoglycemia occasionally occurs in patients with neoplastic diseases. We have described a patient with monocytic leukemia who had both, apparently as a result of marked leukemic infiltration of the liver. These metabolic anomalies were greatly ameliorated by chemotherapy. Thus, in leukemia and other malignant disorders in which significant liver infiltration is present, these metabolic derangements should be looked for, as their presence may call for a prompt and intensive treatment.

A 13-year old boy with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on chemotherapy developed neutropenia and acute cellulitis progressing to fulminating septicemia due to Pseudomonas pseudomallei. Septicemic melioidosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a febrile illness in children who are susceptible to infections.

Axillary skin lesions can cause significant morbidity in patients with acute nonlymphocytic leukemia. The incidence in relation to the level of circulating granulocytes and the microbiology of 15 such lesions among 150 patients over a three year period were determined. In the study of 38 cases of leukemia, neoplastic infiltration of the brain was the most frequent lesion, occuring in 70,5%, compared to 48,5% for hemorrhage. The leptomeninges were the most frequent site of leukemic infiltration followed by the choroid plexus (57,8%) and the nervous tissue (50%). Acute lymphoblastic leukemia can be subdivided into groups with different prognoses and clinical courses by immunological cell-markers. Patients with blasts, expressing T-cell-markers in a high density (T-cell leukemia), had an increased incidence of meningeal relapses, tumor formation in abdomen or mediastinum. In 25 cases cytochemical types of acute leukemia were determined using the classification of Loeffler. Three cytochemical methods used were: p.a.S.-glycogen content, pox-peroxidase activity, and esterase activity determinatione. At the same time selective identification of lysosomes in perypheral blood blast cells was done using vital euchrisine staining and fluorescence microscopy. A correlation was observed between the cytochemical types of acute leukaemia and the lysosomal pattern. The fluorescence method of the identification of lysosomes is suggested for diagnosis of acute leukaemia.

Most of criteria on duration of chemotherapy in acute lymphoblastic leukemia of children are based upon the prolonged state of complete remission (CR). Twenty five cases of 30 months CR duration were studied for their follow-up. Maintenance therapy in these patients was made according to two modalities. For the first time a report is given on a case of chronic eosinophilic leukemia with occurence of eosinophilic pulmonary granulomas. Even after enucleation of the granulomas eosinophilia remained in the peripheral blood and in the bone marrow, and over a period of 6 years lay at a value of above 50% of the granulocytes.
