INTRODUCTION: Only few procedures for Lisfranc ligaments reconstruction to treat subtle injury of the Lisfranc joint have been reported. We have developed a novel technique for Lisfranc ligaments reconstruction, which was applied to treat chronic symptomatic subtle injuries that had failed to respond to initial treatment or were misdiagnosed. This article describes the technique and its operative outcome in a small case series.
METHODS: Between April 2011 and October 2013, 5 (4 male and 1 female) athletes with a mean age of 19.4 (range 17-21) years were diagnosed with chronic subtle injury of…

[Purpose] After an anterior cruciate ligament injury and subsequent reconstruction, quadriceps muscle weakness and disruption of proprioceptive function are common. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a 4 weeks preoperative exercise intervention on knee strength power and function post-surgery. [Subjects and Methods] Eighty male patients (27.8±5.7 age), scheduled for reconstruction surgery, were randomly assigned to two groups, the preoperative exercise group (n=40) and a no preoperative exercise group (n=40). The preoperative exercise group participated in a 4-week preoper

We evaluated the long-term clinical results of acute complete acromioclavicular dislocations treated by reconstruction of the acromioclavicular and coracoclavicular ligament using trapezius muscle fascia. Open reduction and internal fixation was performed using the clavicular hook plate in 12 patients with acute complete acromioclavicular joint dislocation, and the acromioclavicular and coracoclavicular ligaments were reconstructed using trapezius muscle fascia. Radiographic evaluations were conducted postoperatively. We evaluated the functional results with constant scoring system and radiolo…

OBJECTIVE: Assess clinical results using two different protocols, 10 years after ACL reconstruction surgery with the central third of quadriceps muscle tendon (QT).
METHOD: Between November /1997 and April/1998, 25 patients were submitted to 25 ACL reconstructions with QT by transtibial technique. The bone portion of the graft was fixated on femoral tunnel with interference screw and the tendinous portion of tibial tunnel with screw with washer. Two patients injured the new when playing soccer. Six patients were not available for follow-up (24%). Seventeen patients were evaluated, 15 men and

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: In contrast to the majority of outcome data, many consider C1 fractures to be benign injuries and so have advocated for conservative management, except in the case of concomitant transverse atlantal ligament (TAL) injury where C1-C2 or occiput-C2 fusions are recommended.
PURPOSE: Our goal was to evaluate a series of unstable C1 fractures treated with C1 open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) to assess clinical and radiographic outcomes by determining the success of reduction and pain relief.
STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: This is a retrospective cohort review.

BACKGROUND: In the present study, we aimed to compare clinical and radiographic outcomes between hook plate fixation and coracoclavicular (CC) ligament reconstruction for the treatment of acute unstable acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocation.
METHODS: Forty-two patients who underwent surgery for an unstable acute dislocation of the AC joint were included. We divided them into two groups according to the treatment modality: internal fixation with a hook plate (group I, 24 cases) or CC ligament reconstruction (group II, 18 cases). We evaluated the clinical outcomes using a visual analog scale

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the usefulness of 3-dimensional (3D) measurement of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL), and identify the reliability of a novel 3D method of measurement.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: OPLL is not a 2-dimensional (2D) disease, but rather a 3D disease. Therefore, conventional measurement of parameters using radiography may not be suitable for evaluating OPLL. However, there is no study that investigated the correlation between 3D parameters of OPLL and clinical outcomes.
METHODS: 50 patients (40 males and 10 femal

BACKGROUND: Many invading oral bacteria are known to produce considerable amounts of hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The toxic activity of exogenous H2S in periodontal tissue has been demonstrated, but the role of endogenous H2S in the physiologic function of periodontal tissue remains poorly understood. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the biologic functions of H2S in the proliferation and differentiation of human periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs).
METHODS: PDLSCs were isolated from periodontal ligament tissues of periodontally healthy volunteers or patients with periodontit

BACKGROUND: Recent literature has demonstrated that involvement in pivoting sports at the time of injury, increased posterior-inferior tibial slope (PITS), anterolateral capsular ligament (ALCL) disruptions, and combined lateral meniscal lesions all contribute to a higher grade of pivot shift after acute anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries.
PURPOSE: To identify risk factors associated with grade 3 pivot shift after acute ACL injuries.
STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: A database of patients undergoing primary ACL reconstruction from 2009 to 2015 after ac

Isolated traumatic oculomotor nerve palsy caused by a trivial fall is extremely rare. We report a case of this condition. A 49-year-old woman had distal radius fracture and ptosis on the same side after having a trivial domestic fall. She did not show any clinical or radiological signs of head injury. Computerized tomography revealed a calcified posterior petroclinoid ligament which has direct anatomical and pathological relation with the oculomotor nerve.

After teeth are replanted, there are two possible healing responses: periodontal ligament healing or ankylosis with subsequent replacement resorption. The purpose of this study was to compare the fatigue resistance of vertically fractured teeth after bonding the fragments under conditions simulating both healing modes. Thirty-two human premolars were vertically fractured and the fragments were bonded together with Super-Bond C&B. They were then randomly distributed into four groups (BP, CP, CA, BA). The BP and CP groups were used to investigate the periodontal ligament healing mode whilst the

BACKGROUND: Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) may increase the risk of spinal cord injury (SCI) with various neurological deficits after minor trauma. However, few studies have investigated the influence of OPLL on neurological outcome after acute cord injury. We examined whether severe spinal canal stenosis caused by OPLL affects neurological outcome after SCI based on intramedullary signal intensity (SI) changes on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
METHODS: From June 2006 to July 2013, we treated 246 patients with cervical cord injury. Fifty-one (20.7%) patients had

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this case report is to describe the diagnostic value of ultrasonography (US) in a patient with injury to the lateral ligaments of the ankle with concomitant ankle joint osteoarthritis and anterior impingement.
CLINICAL FEATURES: A 28-year-old male had a history of an inversion injury of the left ankle. Diagnostic US of the left ankle using an 8- to 15-MHz linear array transducer demonstrated a full thickness tear of the anterior talofibular ligament, partial thickness tearing of the calcaneofibular ligament, and laxity of the ankle with varus stress testing. In addit…

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is an important risk factor for development of knee osteoarthritis (OA). To identify those ACL injured patients at increased risk for knee OA, it is necessary to understand risk factors for OA.
AIM: To summarise the evidence for determinants of (1) tibiofemoral OA and (2) patellofemoral OA in ACL injured patients.
METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science and CINAHL databases were searched up to 20 December 2013. Additionally, reference lists of eligible studies were manually and independently screened by two reviewers. 2348 studies were ass

BACKGROUND: The incidence of the patellofemoral joint chondral lesions after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is disturbingly high. Few studies have assessed the factors affecting patellofemoral joint chondral lesions postoperatively.
HYPOTHESIS: The recovery of quadriceps strength after ACLR could be associated with patellofemoral joint cartilage damage.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: A total of 88 patients who underwent arthroscopic anatomic double-bundle ACLR with hamstring autografts received second-look arthroscopy at the time of metal staple

We studied the effects of autologous biomedical cell product (bone marrow multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells and their conditioned media) on the parameters of the microcirculatory bed in the broad ligament of the uterus of normal Wistar rats were studied. The parameters of microcirculation and lymph drainage in the broad ligament changed in opposite directions in response to injection of autologous biomedical cell product via different routes. This fact should be taken into consideration when prescribing cell therapy for inflammatory degenerative processes in the pelvic organs.

Prophylactic salpingectomy at the time of hysterectomy has been recommended for women at average risk for ovarian cancer. Vaginal hysterectomy is considered the preferred approach to a benign hysterectomy, and adnexectomy should not be considered a contraindication to this approach. This paper with accompanying video describes and demonstrates the round ligament technique and use of a vessel-sealing device to facilitate removal of the entire fallopian tube at the time of vaginal hysterectomy.

BACKGROUND: Patients generally choose to undergo anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) to return to their active lifestyles. However, returning to their previous activity level may result in a retear of their reconstructed knee or an injury to their contralateral anterior cruciate ligament (CACL).
PURPOSE: To determine the risk factors associated with revision ACLR and contralateral ACLR (CACLR), compare the survival of the reconstructed ACL with the CACL, and determine how the risk factors associated with revision ACLR compare with those for CACLR.
