Effects of estradiol administration on feto-placental growth in rat.

BACKGROUND: To clarify the effect of estradiol benzoate on placental structure and its consequences for fetal survival and fetoplacental growth. STUDY DESIGN: Estradiol benzoate (0, 0.1, 1, 10, 100 microg/day) was infused intraperitoneally into pregnant Wistar rats from 12 to 19 days' gestation. Survival rate, weight of pups and placentas at 20 days' gestation, and plasma levels of estrogen and progesterone were measured. Pathological changes in the placenta were also examined. RESULTS: Estradiol benzoate reduced fetal survival (1 microg/day: 100%, 10 microg/day: 70%, 100 microg/day: 14.6%)

[Acute fatty liver in pregnancy. Current concepts].

The acute pregnancy liver fat (APLF) is an illness that occurs exclusively during pregnancy. Its cause is unknown and it only appears during the second half of pregnancy, specially between 32 and 36 weeks. Usually the APLF symptoms starts one to two weeks before hospitalization with nausea, emesis, general uneasiness, jaundice, epigastric pain and other symptoms. As to the laboratories: white cells count, bilirubin, transaminase, coagulation period and amonio increases; on the other hand, the platelets, hemoglobin, glycemia, fybrinogen and antitrombin III decreases. The hepatic biopsy should b

Unexplained elevations of maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein.

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a commonly used prenatal screening test for congenital anomalies. However, when anomalies are excluded after high resolution ultrasound and/or amniocentesis, an elevated maternal serum AFP (MSAFP) has been found to be associated with a 2- to 4-fold increase in low birthweight resulting from both preterm delivery and intrauterine growth retardation. Unexplained MSAFP elevations are also associated with up to 10-fold increase of placental abruption and a 10-fold increase in perinatal mortality. Results from studies of over 225,000 screened pregnancies indicate that 20

Patterns and risk factors of birth defects in Bangladesh: evidence from a neonatal intensive care unit.

INTRODUCTION: Birth defects constitute substantial contributor to neonatal mortality and morbidity particularly in low and middle income countries. In Bangladesh, limited screening and low awareness contribute to delayed diagnoses and inadequate care. This study aimed to delineate the patterns of birth defects and identify associated risk factors to provide baseline data in a tertiary care neonatal intensive care unit in Bangladesh to support future surveillance, inform policy development, and guide preventive strategies. METHODS: This hospital based prospective observational study was conduc

Birth weight is inversely associated with incident coronary heart disease and stroke among individuals born in the 1950s: findings from the Aberdeen Children of the 1950s prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Birth weight is inversely associated with cardiovascular disease risk factors, but few studies have examined the association with disease end points, in particular with stroke risk. Furthermore, previous studies demonstrating an inverse association between birth weight and coronary heart disease (CHD) risk have been conducted on populations born in the early part of the 20th century, when infant mortality rates were high. If the environmental factors associated with improvements in infant mortality rates over the last century explain the inverse association between birth weight and

Developing comprehensive perinatal quality of care instruments in Mexico: An inclusive, multidisciplinary, and culturally sensitive approach.

Ensuring high-quality care during pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and the newborn period is essential for reducing maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. In Mexico, a significant gap exists in comprehensive, culturally relevant instruments to assess quality of care (QoC) across these critical stages. This study aimed to develop robust, context-specific instruments to evaluate key dimensions of maternal and neonatal care, including patient experience, clinical processes, and hospital infrastructure. Using a modified Delphi method, we conducted two national workshops with 78 unique na

A Study to Evaluate the Efficacy of Second-trimester Serum Beta-human Chorionic Gonadotropin in the Prediction of Pregnancy-induced Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) is a significant cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Early prediction of PIH could facilitate timely intervention and improved outcomes. Among biochemical markers, maternal serum beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) has been suggested as a potential predictor, especially when measured during the second trimester. Identifying its predictive accuracy in clinical settings could enhance antenatal risk stratification protocols. AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of second-trimester maternal se

Multifetal gestation and long-term maternal health.

Multifetal gestations account for 2% to 3% of births in high-resource settings and impose substantially greater cardiovascular and metabolic stress than singleton pregnancies. Women carrying twins experience approximately 15% higher cardiac output, greater plasma volume expansion, and elevated placental angiogenic factors, translating into approximately twofold higher rates of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and variable rates of gestational diabetes mellitus. The early postpartum period represents heightened cardiovascular and mental health vulnerability, with increased rates of cardiopul

Molecular detection of Neospora caninum in the placenta and blood of postparturient cows and their full-term precolostral calves.

Neospora caninum is a major cause of abortion and neonatal mortality in cattle worldwide. While vertical transmission is considered the primary route of infection, the precise relationship between maternal parasitemia, placental infection, and congenital transmission remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the associations between maternal serological and molecular status, placental infection, and neonatal infection in precolostral calves to better understand the mechanisms of vertical transmission. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 53 postparturient clinically healthy Holstein
