Intoxication with Fireball Whiskey causing severe lactic acidosis.

Propylene glycol is a viscous, colorless liquid that has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use as a preservative in foods and as a solvent in pharmaceuticals. Compared with methanol and ethylene glycol, it is regarded as a relatively safe alcohol. There have been several reports of severe lactic acidosis in the setting of iatrogenic unintentional overdosing of medications that use propylene glycol as a diluent, including lorazepam and diazepam. The laboratory findings may include high metabolic acidosis and high osmolal gap. Propylene glycol is also one of the ingredient

Tuning the Friction of Graphene on Mica by Alcohol Intercalation.

The friction of graphene on mica was studied using lateral force microscopy. We observed that intercalation of alcohol molecules significantly increases the friction of graphene, as compared to water. An increase of 1.8, 2.4, and 5.9 times in friction between the atomic force microscopy tip and  single-layer graphene was observed for methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol, respectively. Moreover, the friction of graphene is found to be higher for single-layer graphene than for multilayer graphene. We attribute the increase in friction to the additional vibrational modes of alcohol molecules. The si

The effect of alcohols as the third component on diffusion in mixtures of aromatics and ketones.

With laboratory and numerical work, we demonstrate that one of the main diffusion coefficients and the smaller eigenvalue of the Fick diffusion matrix are invariant to the number of methylene groups of the alcohol in ternary mixtures composed of an aromatic (benzene), a ketone (acetone) and one of three different alcohols (methanol, ethanol or 2-propanol). A critical analysis of the relationship between the kinetic and thermodynamic contributions to the diffusion coefficients allows us to explain this intriguing behaviour of this class of mixture. These findings are reflected by the diffusive

Larvicidal and ovicidal activity of Cassia fistula Linn. leaf extract against filarial and malarial vector mosquitoes.

Methanolic leaf extract of Cassia fistula was tested for larvicidal and ovicidal activity against Culex quinquefasciatus and Anopheles stephensi. The extract was found to be more lethal to the larvae of A. stephensi than C. quinquefasciatus with LC(50) values of 17.97 and 20.57 mg/l, respectively. Mean percent hatchability of the ovicidal activity was observed 120 h after treatment. The percent hatchability was inversely proportional to the concentration of extract and directly proportional to the eggs. The egg raft of C. quinquefasciatus was found to be more hatchable than A. stephensi. The r

Simultaneous determination of cyanide and thiocyanate in blood by ion chromatography with fluorescence and ultraviolet detection.

An ion chromatographic method for the simultaneous determination of cyanide and thiocyanate in blood has been developed. After extraction by adding water and methanol to blood, cyanide was derivatized with 2,3-naphthalenedialdehyde and taurine to give a fluorescent product of 1-cyanobenz[f]isoindole. This compound was detected with high sensitivity by fluorometry and the underivatized thiocyanate was detected by ultraviolet absorption. The detection limits were 3.8 pmol ml(-1) for cyanide and 86 pmol ml(-1) for thiocyanate, and the recoveries from blood were ca. 83% and ca. 100%, respectively.

Separation of gangliosides by anion-exchange chromatography on Mono Q.

A new type of strong anion-exchange resin, Mono Q, has been used in the separation of brain gangliosides. The resin consists of monodisperse particles (9.8 micron) and was used in prepacked columns with a bed volume of 1 ml. The gangliosides were separated into mono-, di-, tri- and tetrasialoganglioside fractions by a discontinuous gradient of potassium acetate in methanol. The separation was complete in a volume of 50 ml. The major advantages of the new procedure compared to conventional methods are the shorter separation time, higher loading capacity and recovery of separated ganglioside fra

Interaction of bromine vapor with nitrogen-based electron-donor molecules: thermodynamic, kinetic, and DFT investigations.

CONTEXT: Molecular bromine (Br₂) is an important halogen in atmospheric chemistry and is also associated with environmental contamination. Nitrogen-containing donor molecules in methanolic solutions interact selectively with Br₂, leading to the formation of donor-bromine complexes. The diffusion and reactivity of bromine vapor were investigated using UV-visible spectroscopy in the 200-600 nm range. Bromine concentrations and reaction products were quantified through calibration curves and mathematical modeling. Photophysical and thermodynamic parameters, including molar extinction coefficients
