This study was initiated to understand why talc was found in the entrance wounds and pericapsular scars of patients with silicone breast implants. Twenty-five surgical gloves made between 1977 and 1992 by a major glove manufacturer were evaluated with infrared spectroscopy. Seven gloves manufactured before early 1983 contained talc. Some patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) present with sudden onset of nephrotic syndrome and biopsy findings may be of minimal change disease or focal segmental glomerulosclerosis with diffuse foot process effacement on electron microscopy but without significant immune deposits. This entity is termed lupus podocytopathy. Clinicians and renal pathologists need to be aware of this condition. Though steroid sensitive, it needs follow-up to recognize flare and class change, thereby optimizing therapy.

We report a case of facultative intestinal myiasis due to larvae of the drone fly Eristalis tenax, also named the rat-tailed maggots. The development of larvae in the lower bowel was responsible for non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms that resembled ulcerative proctitis. The diagnosis was established upon the observation of four spontaneously excreted mobile larvae. The definite identification of the E. tenax species was made possible by scanning electron microscopy. The clinical outcome was satisfactory.

MYH9 mutations cause the inherited macro-thrombocytopenic syndromes of May-Hegglin anomaly, Fechtner syndrome, Sebastian syndrome, and Epstein syndrome, collectively referred to as MYH9-related disease. We present the case of a girl with MYH9-related disease whose diagnosis was facilitated by platelet electron microscopy and MYH9 sequencing. We discuss our patient's clinical presentation, now with 12 years of follow-up. We also discuss management and her possible prognosis given her specific MYH9 mutation.

We present a case of a 58-year-old man who experienced Bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia after a 3-month exposure to polyester powder paint. Mineralogical analysis by transmission electron microscopy of a pulmonary sample and the polyester powder paint he was exposed to showed the presence of titanium dioxide nanoparticles in both. We suggest that exposure to titanium dioxide nanoparticles should be added to the etiology of Bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia.

Faulty ventral openings of the urethra constitute a broad spectrum of malformations that are subsumed under the term "hypospadia." The normal development of the urethra and the genitals critically depends on the following events: (a) formation of the external genitalia, (b) fate of the cloacal membrane, and (c) formation of the distal urethra. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate these events using microsurgical techniques and scanning electron microscopy in staged rat embryos.

We discuss a 9-month-old male baby, submitted to surgery for correction of aortic coarctation, who showed severe bronchospasm, hypoxaemia, and cardio-respiratory arrest, and who died on the fifth postoperative day. The autopsy revealed histological signs of severe pulmonary vasoconstriction, possibly as a consequence of hypoxaemia secondary to bronchiolitis due to infection with the respiratory syncytial virus. This supposition was confirmed when viruses were detected in pulmonary tissue by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy.

OBJECTIVE: To report on a patient with clear gelatinoid deposits on the iris and in the anterior chamber (AC).
DESIGN: Observational case report.
METHODS: Examination of AC aspirate and iris and conjunctival biopsies by light and transmission electron microscopy.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Clinical and histopathological findings.
RESULTS: Analysis of the aqueous humor and iris ultrastructure disclosed the presence of urate deposits.

We report a boy, born to healthy first cousin parents, with diffuse hyperpigmentation of the skin and guttate hypomelanotic lesions, photophobia, abnormal hair, developmental delay, and recurrent bronchitis. Skin histology showed pigmentation incontinence with numerous melanophages. Electron microscopy showed a very high number of melanosomes and some degenerating keratinocytes. These features correspond to a rare genodermatosis, the X-linked reticulate pigmentary disorder with systemic manifestations. Skewed X-inactivation patterns were detected in the mother's lymphocytes.

Three related patients from Colombia presented with a juvenile-onset neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis. Electron microscopy of one case showed condensed fingerprint profiles, and genetic analyses identified a novel missense mutation in CLN5. The authors demonstrate the existence of pathogenic CLN5 mutations outside northern Europe and that mutations in this gene can lead to an atypical late-onset neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis disease, in addition to the late infantile form first described in Finland.

A virus was isolated from the liver and stomach of a leaf-tailed gecko (Uroplatus fimbriatus) with granulomatous lesions on the tongue and hepatitis. The virus was identified as an iridovirus on the basis of morphology by electron microscopy, restriction endonuclease assay, and sequencing of a large portion of the major capsid protein gene. Comparative analysis revealed that this isolate is related to frog virus 3, the type species of the genus Ranavirus.

A 40 year old man with AIDS had memory deficit and visual impairment. The brain magnetic resonance images showed abnormalities in the white matter not enhanced with gadolinium. JC-virus DNA was detected in the cerebrospinal fluid. He died after a few weeks of progressive neurologic deterioration. Histologic examination showed changes compatible with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. Polyoma virus etiology was confirmed by immunostaining of brain tissue sections and electron microscopy of infected oligodendrocytes.
