Chorea-acanthocytosis (ChAc) is a rare genetic disorder characterised by a hyperkinetic movement disorder, dystonia, cognitive and neuropsychiatric deficits and seizures. We report the case of a 30-year-old patient who presented with a decade of episodic neurological dysfunction and seizures. The condition was initially suspected to be an immunotherapy-responsive seronegative autoimmune encephalitis but progressed to oromandibular dystonia, raising suspicion of a neurodegenerative condition. Neuroimaging showed bilateral caudate atrophy and acanthocytes were seen on blood film microscopy in as

GNB1-related disorder is characterized by intellectual disability, abnormal tone, and other variable neurologic and systemic features. GNB1 encodes the β1 subunit of the heterotrimeric G-protein, a complex with a key role in signal transduction. Consistent with its particularly high expression in rod photoreceptors, Gβ1 forms a subunit of retinal transducin (Gαtβ1γ1 ), which mediates phototransduction. In mice, GNB1 haploinsufficiency has been associated with retinal dystrophy. In humans, however, although vision and eye movement abnormalities are common in individuals with GNB1-related disord

Hashimoto's Encephalopathy (HE), also known as steroid responsive encephalopathy associated with autoimmune thyroiditis (SREAT), is a proteiform disorder known for its wide spectrum of presentations from subtle neuropsychiatric manifestations, movement disorders, seizures, stroke-like episodes to coma. Here, we report a case of HE which initially masqueraded as bipolar affective disorder (BPAD) and ultimately progressed to generalized tonic clonic seizures and coma. Although SREAT is characterized by exquisite responsive to steroid, in our case it was unresponsive to pulse methylprednisolone t

Neck-tongue syndrome (NTS) is a rarely reported disorder characterised by paroxysmal episodes of intense pain in the upper cervical or occipital areas associated with ipsilateral hemiglossal dysaesthesia brought about by sudden neck movement. The most likely cause of this clinical entity is a temporary subluxation of the lateral atlantoaxial joint with impaction of the C2 ventral ramus against the articular processes on head rotation. NTS is an under-recognised condition that can be debilitating for patients and challenging for the treating physicians. Here, we report a 47-year-old man who ful

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder. In 2015, The Movement Disorder Society Clinical Diagnostic Criteria for PD was published. In the criteria, the absolute exclusion criteria and red flags were designed to minimize diagnostic error, in particular to differentiate from neurodegenerative or secondary parkinsonism. Here, we reviewed neurodegenerative disorders that we should differentiate from PD. The common differential diagnoses, such as multiple system atrophy, progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal degeneration, dementia with Lewy bodies, and essential tremo

The term "work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs)," refers to musculoskeletal disorders to which the work environment contributes significantly, or to musculoskeletal disorders that are made worse or longer lasting by work conditions or workplace risk factors. In recent years, there has been an increase in reporting WMSDs for dental persons. Risk factors of WMSDs with specific reference to dentistry include - stress, poor flexibility, improper positioning, infrequent breaks, repetitive movements, weak postural muscles, prolonged awkward postures and improper adjustment of equipment. The attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is an heterogeneous, complex and common childhood disorder that causes significant impairment of child's functioning. This paper reviews the epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis, comorbidity, course and treatment of ADHD. Special attention is paid to sleep problems both because these 2 conditions frequently co-exist and because there is substantial evidence that ADHD psychopathology and sleep-wake regulation share common neurobiologic mechanisms. Moreover, there could be an overlap between symptoms of ADHD and certain sleep problems such as obst

Behavioral impairments in parkinsonian patients include agitation, hypersexuality, stereotypic movement, pathological gambling, abuse of antiparkinsonian drugs, REM sleep behavioral disorder, and restless legs syndrome. Dementia, psychoses, and emotional disorders, such as depression and anxiety/panic disorder, also impair behavior. Symptoms may be produced by dysfunction of the central nervous system, medication, and/or the psychosocial problems associated with Parkinson's disease. Treatment therefore should be based on the cause of the symptoms seen. In some cases, the reduction or change of

Structural and functional images of the brain play an important role as powerful adjuncts in the management of an increasing number of neurologic and psychiatric diseases. Brain SPECT, in particular, with perfusion agents or with neuroreceptor imaging radiopharmaceuticals, is rapidly becoming a clinical tool in many places. For many neurologic and psychiatric conditions, this imaging modality has been used in diagnosis, prognosis assessment, evaluation of response to therapy, risk stratification, detection of benign or malignant viable tissue, and choice of medical or surgical therapy. Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neuropsychiatric movement disorder characterized by the presence of multiple motor and phonic tics. Monoamine neurotransmitter dysfunction has been implicated in the expression of the condition. Standard as well as novel pharmacologic treatments for TS as a sole entity or as a condition co-morbid with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and/or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) target these presumed neurotransmitter abnormalities. Choice of a specific medication is also predicated upon an individual patient's symptom profile, a cost-benefit analysis of

The disorders of ocular motility seen in association with brainstem or cerebellar disorders may point to rather specific anatomical or pathological correlations. Pontine gaze palsy reflects involvement of the pontine paramedian reticular formation. Internuclear ophthalmoplegia signifies a lesion in the medial longitudinal fasciculus. Skew deviation may result from a lesion anywhere in the posterior fossa. Ocular bobbing typically results from a pontine lesion. The Sylvian aqueduct syndrome is characteristic of involvement in the upper midbrain-pretectal region, usually a pinealoma. Cerebellar

Chorea is caused by a number of conditions, including genetic, metabolic derangements, infections, drugs, toxins, tumors, and disorders of the immune and inflammatory system of the body. Huntington's disease (HD) is the most common genetic cause of chorea. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune condition. Common symptoms include oral ulcers, joint pain, malar or discoid rashes, photosensitivity, and blood dyscrasias. It can involve the heart, lungs, kidneys, and brain. SLE can cause neuropsychiatric manifestations like psychosis, seizures, headache, confusion, and stroke. Chorea i

PURPOSE: This study evaluated eye movements (i.e., regressions, fixations, and saccades) in a variety of reading contexts in school-age children with and without reading disorders (RDs).
METHOD: This study used an experimental design with two groups: peers with RDs and typically developing (TD) peers. A Tobii Pro Spectrum system was used to capture eye movement data for all participants during the reading tasks under the following conditions: (a) single words without cognitive demand, (b) single-word reading with cognitive demand, and (c) grade-level paragraph reading text.
RESULTS: The resu

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are highly prevalent among children, the signs and symptoms of which include muscle pain, ringing in the ears, limited vertical movement of the jaw and deviated mouth opening. Recent studies have demonstrated that low level laser irradiation of the blood stream, which is denominated vascular photobiomodulation (VPBM), can diminish pain and inflammation and has sedative and systemic effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of VPBM on the reduction in pain and increase in the vertical movement of the jaw in children with TMDs. Chil

OBJECTIVE: Dystonia is a movement disorder that causes involuntary muscle contractions and abnormal movements. Often, repeated practice does not lead to motor improvement in children with acquired dystonia, likely because of sensory deficits, which may contribute to their impairment. Therefore, improvements in sensory function might improve motor performance. In this study, we propose that augmented vibrotactile biofeedback may improve motor learning in children with acquired dystonia but not in children with genetic dystonia who do not have associated sensory deficits. Understanding the motion characteristics of cervical spine through biomechanical analysis aids in the identification of abnormal joint movements. This knowledge is essential for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of related disorders. However, the anatomical structure of the cervical spine is complex, and traditional medical imaging techniques have certain limitations. Capturing the movement characteristics of various parts of the cervical spine in vivo during motion is challenging. The dual fluoroscopic imaging system (DFIS) is able to quantify the motion and motion patterns of individu

This is a comprehensive review of the literature regarding the use of Deutetrabenazine in treating chorea associated with Huntington's disease. Unfortunately, treatment has been limited for many aspects of this neurodegenerative disease. The present investigation presents the background, evidence, and indications for the use Deutetrabenazine in the setting of Huntington's disease. Huntington's disease is characterized by a variety of motor, psychiatric, and cognitive symptoms with chorea being one of the more notable ones. Chorea is a movement disorder present in multiple neurologic diseases t

Limb-kinetic apraxia (LKA) is an execution disorder of movements caused by an injury to the secondary motor area (the supplementary motor area and premotor cortex) with preservation of an intact corticospinal tract (CST). A precise diagnosis of LKA is often limited because it is made based on the clinical observation of movement characteristics with confirmation of the CST state, and no specific clinical assessment tools for LKA have been developed. Diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) enables a three-dimensional estimation of the neural tracts related to LKA, such as the CST and corticofugal t
