Vascular anatomy of the fifth metatarsal.

The extraosseous and intraosseous vascular anatomy to the fifth metatarsal as visualized in a group of below-the-knee amputation specimens has been described. The extrinsic circulation to the area is provided by the dorsal metatarsal artery, the plantar metatarsal arteries, and the fibular plantar marginal artery. These three source arteries supply branches to the metatarsal and adjacent joints. The intraosseous vascularity consists of a periosteal plexus, a nutrient artery, and a system of metaphyseal and capital vessels.

Microorganisms Involved in the Spoilage of Fermented Fruit Juices.

Bottled wines, ciders and perries that contain sugar are susceptible to refermentation by yeasts and the growth of lactic acid bacteria. The yeasts are strongly fermentative strains, often species of Saccharomyces , while the lactics are acid and ethanol tolerant species that grow slowly and are fastidious in their nutrient requirements. Spoilage is manifested by gas, haze and various flavor changes. Control procedures include filtration, pasteurization and the use of the preservatives sulfur dioxide and sorbic acid.

Beyond degradation: Dissecting autophagy-protease relationships in plant reproduction.

Plant reproduction requires precisely timed cellular degradation to support developmental remodeling, organelle quality control, nutrient recycling, programmed cell death (PCD), and fertilization. Autophagy and protease-mediated proteolysis are major degradative systems but are often discussed either separately or as functionally linked without sufficient evidence of direct molecular coupling. Autophagy primarily mediates cargo sequestration, vacuolar delivery, metabolic remodeling, and organelle quality control. Proteases, in contrast, execute substrate cleavage, pro-enzyme maturation, nutrie

Unraveling the biochemical and kinetic mechanisms of potassium solubilization from biotite by a Burkholderia strain.

Potassium solubilizing bacteria (KSB) represent a sustainable strategy for enhancing soil K bioavailability through the dissolution of K-bearing minerals, thereby facilitating nutrient cycling. However, the multifaceted biochemical mechanisms driving mineral weathering remain partially understood. The present study explores the K solubilization characteristic and mechanisms of KSB by analyzing the organic acids they metabolize and their interactions with mineral surfaces. Over 30 d, the strain S1 classified to genus Burkholderia achieved a maximum soluble K+ concentration of 39.8 mg/L, represe

Metabolic convergence on TOR signaling in the chestnut blight fungus and its regulation by host plant signals.

Transcriptomic analysis of the chestnut blight fungus Cryphonectria parasitica identified 22 core genes regulated by Cryphonectria hypovirus 1 (CHV1) infection and sectorization. Twelve genes with common phenocopies were analyzed: all mutants displayed restricted colonial growth, intense pigmentation, hyperbranched terminal hyphae with swollen globose cells, and reduced conidiation. Although gene-specific mutant phenotypes existed, responses to most stressors were similar to those of the wild-type. Mutant growth was highly sensitive to nutrient conditions, and growth restriction was notably al

Maternal Diet and Offspring ASD and ADHD: A Critical Narrative Review of Dietary Patterns, Choline, and Polyphenol-Related Exposures.

Maternal diet may influence fetal neurodevelopment through nutrient availability, placental function, and maternal-fetal metabolite signaling. This critical narrative review used a structured, purposive search to organize human evidence on prenatal dietary patterns, choline, and polyphenol-related exposures according to outcome directness: diagnosed autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), related dimensional traits, and general neurodevelopment. Whole-diet studies provide the most direct human evidence, but diagnostic findings are cohort-dependent and

A Dual Stressor System Negatively Impacts In vivo Luminescence from Bioluminescent Bacteria.

Cellular health requires an intricate balance of prooxidants and antioxidants. Enzymatic and non-enzymatic molecules that maintain this balance succumb to oxidative insults beyond certain levels. Therefore, it becomes necessary to probe cellular health through the estimation of antioxidant enzymes/ molecules, NADH/NAD+ and GSH/GSSG inside a viable cell. This approach demands skilled personnel, considerable time, expensive kits, and reagents. Therefore, there is a search for potent alternatives that can precisely estimate cellular health in real time. In the present study, we exposed biolumines

Programmable microalgae: Engineering sense-decide-adapt systems for dynamic environmental performance.

Microalgal strains are engineered and benchmarked under fixed conditions, yet industrial cultures experience light, temperature, CO₂, salinity and nutrient regimes that shift from seconds to seasons. Programmable microalgae, cells that sense environmental change, integrate signals and adjust their physiology (Sense-Decide-Adapt, SDA), could close this gap. Native nutrient-sensing, photoprotective, carbon-concentrating and osmotic programs already approximate SDA architectures, and genome editing, biosensors and single-cell screening make them tractable to rewire, although direct evidence that

Mechanisms of Pseudomonas spp. as plant growth promoting rhizobacteria: plant nutrition and biocontrol.

Increasing concerns over excessive agrochemical use, the emergence of resistant phytopathogens, and the impacts of climate variability on crop productivity have increased interest in plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) as promising biological alternatives for sustainable crop production. Pseudomonas spp. are among the most extensively studied PGPR due to their remarkable metabolic diversity, strong rhizosphere colonization, and multifunctional roles in enhancing plant nutrition, improving stress tolerance, and suppressing plant diseases. These Gram-negative bacteria enhance plant growt

Beyond growth: The impact of diet on body composition in the farmed cricket Gryllodes sigillatus.

The relative availability of macronutrients can shape industrially relevant traits of mass-reared insects, including their final nutrient composition. Gut-loading - temporarily enriching insects through their final meals - is widely used to enhance feeder insects for captive insectivores, yet it remains unclear whether nutrient composition reflects true assimilation or residual diet in the gut, and whether macronutrient gut-loading can enrich whole-body composition. We examined how diets with distinct protein to carbohydrate (P:C) ratios influence adult body composition and whether changes ari…

Tract-wide transcriptomic and metabolomic profiling reveals gastrointestinal regionalization in Jiekarzi semi-fine wool sheep.

Jiekarzi semi-fine-wool sheep are indigenous to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and may face substantial demands on digestive efficiency under low temperatures, hypoxia and seasonal forage limitation. However, the molecular organization of the gastrointestinal tract in this breed remains insufficiently characterized. Here, we profiled mucosal transcriptomes and digestive-fluid metabolomes from 10 gastrointestinal segments collected from six 12-month-old male Jiekarzi. The segments were grouped into four digestive regions: forestomach, true stomach, small intestine and large intestine. Transcriptome

Influence of Different Levels of a Rubber Seed Kernel Pellet Supplement on Feed Efficiency, Blood Chemistry, and Growth Performance in Beef Cattle.

The rubber seed kernel is a byproduct of rubber plantations and has potential as a source of protein and lipids. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effect of rubber seed kernel pellet (RUSKEP) supplementation on feed intake, nutrient digestibility, blood chemistry, and growth performance. Twelve crossbred (Brahman × Thai native) bulls with a body weight (BW) of 285 ± 17 kg were randomly assigned to three treatments for 60 days in a completely randomized design (CRD). RUSKEP was supplemented at 0, 200, and 400 g/animal/day. Animals were fed a total mixed ration (TMR) at 2.3% BW. T

Trypanosoma cruzi modulates its histone post-translational modifications under nutritional stress.

INTRODUCTION: Histone post-translational modifications (hPTMs) constitute one of the main regulatory mechanisms of chromatin state in eukaryotes. The presence of different hPTMs has been described in Trypanosoma cruzi; however, their roles in parasite biology and adaptation to environmental changes remain poorly understood. The nutritional stress faced by the parasite in the intestine of the invertebrate host triggers differentiation of non-infective epimastigotes into infective metacyclic trypomastigotes. METHODS: The modulation of hPTMs in epimastigotes subjected to short- and long-term nut

Friend or Foe: Dietary Restriction and Its Protective Effects on Responses to Ionizing Radiation.

Dietary restriction (DR) has been extensively investigated for its capacity to extend lifespan and mitigate age-associated pathologies. In the context of ionizing radiation (IR), DR-implemented through caloric reduction, selective nutrient restriction, or fasting-based regimens-has emerged as a significant modulator of both cellular and systemic responses to radiation exposure. Growing evidence suggests that DR influences radiation outcomes in a highly context-dependent manner, exerting either protective or sensitizing effects depending on tissue type, metabolic status, timing of intervention,

Bacterial and Fungal Communities Associated with the Ectomycorrhizospheric Soil and Stem Endosphere of the Mycoheterotrophic Plant Monotropa uniflora.

The mycoheterotrophic plant Monotropa uniflora relies on fungal symbionts for carbon and nutrient acquisition. However, its interactions with other microbial groups, beyond ectomycorrhizal fungi, remain unexplored. Here, we characterized bacterial and fungal communities associated with M. uniflora across two compartments: ectomycorrhizospheric soil linked to the mycorrhizal network and the surface-sterilized lower stem endosphere. Microbial community composition was assessed using high-throughput amplicon sequencing of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene and the fungal ITS region. Fungal richness was

Cell cycle reprogramming in plant symbiotic and pathogenic interactions.

Intracellular plant-microbe interactions rely on host-derived interface membranes: as sites for reciprocal nutrient and signal exchange during symbiosis, or as conduits for asymmetrical nutrient acquisition and effector delivery by pathogens. Sustaining these dynamic structures places substantial metabolic and vesicular trafficking demands on host cells. This review examines how cell cycle reprogramming may help plants meet these demands. During plant-pathogen interactions, biotrophic pathogens can reprogram host cell cycle pathways to establish metabolically favorable niches, whereas plant im

Lactobacillus casei TH14 and Hydrolysable Tannin as Corn Silage Additives Modify In Vitro Rumen Fermentation and Reduce Methane Production.

This study evaluated L. casei TH14 (TH14) and two levels of hydrolysable tannin (HT; sweet chestnut, Castanea sativa) as corn ensiling additives, hypothesising that their combination would improve fermentation quality and reduce in vitro CH4. Whole-plant corn was ensiled for 21 days in a completely randomised design (seven treatments, four replicates) combining Molasses, TH14, and HT at 20 or 40 g/kg DM. Silage pH was significantly affected by treatment (p < 0.01), with T4 reaching the lowest final pH (3.83), whereas the primary nutrients (DM, OM, CP, and NDF) were unchanged (p > 0.05). Hydrol…

Resolving root and mycorrhizal strategies in response to soil phosphorus addition in forest ecosystems: a global meta-analysis.

Phosphorus (P) is a key and often scarce element for the growth and regeneration of trees. Formation of diversified roots and collaboration with different mycorrhizal fungi are crucial mechanisms for nutrient acquisition and species coexistence in forest ecosystems. However, how soil P enrichment modifies functional traits and mycorrhizal symbioses of absorptive tree roots remains unclear. We conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of 601 observations from 108 studies to assess how fine root morphological, chemical, mycorrhizal, and enzymatic traits respond to soil P addition. We revealed that
