INTRODUCTION: The mandible is a commonly fractured bone in the face, a fact related to its prominent and exposed position. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of mandibular fractures has been associated with trauma to the surgical site and the surrounding tissues.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of immediate postoperative submucosal depomedrol administration on postoperative pain, edema, and trismus after ORIF for mandibular fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective, randomized, controlled, double-blind study of forty patients who requ

BACKGROUND: Olecranon fractures are one of the most commonly seen orthopaedic injuries in the emergency room. The K-wire which is used in the AO Tension Band Wiring (TBW) technique resists the shear better than the figure of eight wire alone, but, it does not add compression to the fixation strength. But, the cancellous screw plus the tension band wire, in combination, provides the strength of fixation i.e., by converting the tensile force to a compressive force at the fracture site, with additional resistance to the displacement due to the lag screw compression.
OBJECTIVE: To clinically eval

Treatment of unstable, displaced, and comminuted fractures of the proximal humerus remains challenging, and optimal treatment continues to be controversial. Fifty-six patients with displaced 3- and 4-part fractures of the proximal humerus had open reduction and internal fixation using the proximal humeral internal locking system (PHILOS) plate (Synthes, Stratec Medical Ltd, Mezzovico, Switzerland). Data were collected retrospectively, and clinical and radiological outcomes were assessed. Mean follow-up was 40 months (range, 18-62 months). The study shows that the PHILOS plate gives good result

Complex intra-articular fractures of the distal humerus (AO/ASIF type C) pose a significant challenge to the treating surgeon. This study aimed to review the functional outcome of these fractures managed with open reduction and internal fixation through a posterior triceps-sparing approach. Nine cases were treated over a 7-year period, with 7 patients available for review. Of note, the majority of cases were accompanied with significant associated injuries, including vascular and soft tissue trauma. A retrospective analysis of a consecutive series, managed by a single surgeon, was conducted at

PURPOSE: With advances in tools and techniques, percutaneous screw fixation of nondisplaced fractures of the scaphoid waist has gained increasing popularity in recent years as an alternative to prolonged cast immobilization or open reduction and internal fixation. Many reports cite low complication rates, including no complications in some series. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the complications encountered with dorsal percutaneous cannulated screw fixation of nondisplaced scaphoid waist fractures.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for 24 patients who had surgery

The treatment of three- or 4-part proximal humerus fractures is still a matter of scientific discussion. The following study presents the results of a combined procedure using limited invasive fixation techniques for reconstruction of the humerus head and retrograde intramedullary wiring with elastic nails for the treatment of displaced three- or 4-part fractures. A prospective study of 24 patients with 3-part and 4-part fractures was performed from September 1995 to December 1998. Combined biologic fixation for reconstruction of the humerus head, including intramedullary wiring, was utilized.

BACKGROUND: Unstable posterior pelvic ring fractures and dislocations are uncommon but potentially life-threatening injuries in children. Early definitive management reduces risk of immediate complications as well as chronic pain and gait dysfunction. Conventional operative therapy carries substantial risk of extensive blood loss and iatrogenic neurological and vascular injury. Minimally invasive image-guided intervention may further reduce immediate risk and improve long-term outcome.
OBJECTIVE: To describe CT-guided closed reduction and internal fixation (CRIF) and review outcomes of unstab
