Identification and characterization of Fe3O4/peroxodisulfate advanced oxidation products from sulfameter.

Sulfonamides (SAs) are one of the most widely used antibiotics and their residuals in the environment could cause some negative environmental issues. Advanced oxidation such as Fenton-like reaction has been widely applied in the treatment of SAs polluted water. Degradation rates of 95%-99.7% were achieved in this work for the tested 8 SAs, including sulfisomidine, sulfameter (SME), phthalylsulfathiazole, sulfamethoxypyridazine, sulfamonomethoxine, sulfisoxazole, sulfachloropyridazine, and sulfadimethoxine, in the Fe3O4/peroxodisulfate (PDS) oxidation system after the optimization of PDS concen

Dextran-Coated Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Loaded with Curcumin for Antimicrobial Therapies.

The current trend in antimicrobial-agent development focuses on the use of natural compounds that limit the toxicity of conventional drugs and provide a potential solution to the antimicrobial resistance crisis. Curcumin represents a natural bioactive compound with well-known antimicrobial, anticancer, and antioxidant properties. However, its hydrophobicity considerably limits the possibility of body administration. Therefore, dextran-coated iron oxide nanoparticles can be used as efficient drug-delivery supports that could overcome this limitation. The iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesize

Photochemical oxidation of phenols and anilines mediated by phenoxyl radicals in aqueous solution.

Reactive intermediates formed upon irradiation of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) contribute to the degradation of various organic contaminants in surface waters. Besides well-studied "short-lived" photooxidants, such as triplet state CDOM (3CDOM*) or singlet oxygen, CDOM-derived "long-lived" photooxidants (LLPO) have been suggested as key players in the transformation of electron-rich contaminants. LLPO were hypothesized to mainly consist of phenoxyl radicals derived from phenolic moieties in the CDOM. To test this hypothesis and to better characterize LLPO, the transformation ki

[Degradation of Triphenyl Phosphate in Water by UV-driven Advanced Oxidation Processes].

As a type of emerging pollutant of concern, organophosphate esters (OPEs) have posed a moderate risk to the remote Antarctic waters. Triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) is a common type of OPEs in water, which has been proven to have toxic effects, bioaccumulation, and amplification effects and pose a great threat to the environment and human health. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) were used to investigate the degradation process of TPHP in three advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs), including ultraviolet-hydrogen peroxide

Spin Trapping Analysis of Radical Intermediates on the Thermo-Oxidative Degradation of Polypropylene.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the thermo-oxidative degradation behavior of polypropylene (PP) by comparing three types of pris … droperoxide groups generated in the PP chain. In the pristine PP samples, a small amount of hydroperoxides were found to be formed unintentionally, and their homolysis produces alkoxy radicals, RO•, which then undergo β-scission to yield chain-end aldehydes or chain-end ketones. These oxidation products continue to take part in homolysis to produce their …

Thermodynamic-Kinetic Comparison of Palladium(II)-Mediated Alcohol and Hydroquinone Oxidation.

Palladium(II) catalysts promote oxidative dehydrogenation and dehydrogenative coupling of many organic molecules. Oxidations of alcohols to aldehydes or ketones are prominent examples. Hydroquinone (H2Q) oxidation to benzoquinone (BQ) is conceptually related to alcohol oxidation, but it is significantly more challenging thermodynamically. The BQ/H2Q redox potential is sufficiently high that BQ is often used as an oxidant in Pd-catalyzed oxidation reactions. A recent report (J. Am Chem. Soc. 2020, 142, 19678-19688) showed that certain ancillary ligands can raise the PdII/0 redox potential suffi

The Role of Sphingolipid Signaling in Oxidative Lung Injury and Pathogenesis of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia.

Premature infants are born with developing lungs burdened by surfactant deficiency and a dearth of antioxidant defense systems. Survival rate of such infants has significantly improved due to advances in care involving mechanical ventilation and oxygen supplementation. However, a significant subset of such survivors develops the chronic lung disease, Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), characterized by enlarged, simplified alveoli and deformed airways. Among a host of factors contributing to the pathogenesis is oxidative damage induced by exposure of the developing lungs to hyperoxia. Recent dat

Silibinin Ameliorates Formaldehyde-Induced Cognitive Impairment by Inhibiting Oxidative Stress.

Silibinin is a flavonoid extracted from the medicinal plant Silybum marianum (milk thistle), traditionally used to treat liver disease. Recent studies have shown that the antioxidative stress and anti-inflammatory effects of milk thistle are used in the treatment of neurological diseases. Silibinin has antioxidative stress and antiapoptotic effects and reduces cognitive impairment in models of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the underlying mechanism of silibinin related to improvement of cognition remains poorly understood. In this study, we used the model of lateral ventricle injection of

Piezo1 regulates shear-dependent nitric oxide production in human erythrocytes.

Mature circulating red blood cells (RBCs) are classically viewed as passive participants in circulatory function, given erythroblasts eject their organelles during maturation. Endogenous production of nitric oxide (NO) and its effects are of particular significance; however, the integration between RBC sensation of the local environment and subsequent activation of mechano-sensitive signaling networks that generate NO remain poorly understood. The present study investigated endogenous NO production via the RBC-specific nitric oxide synthase isoform (RBC-NOS), connecting membrane strain with in

The Effect of a Neuronal Nitric Oxide Synthase Inhibitor on Neurovascular Regulation in Humans.

BACKGROUND: Neurovascular coupling (NVC) is a key process in cerebral blood flow regulation. NVC ensures adequate brain perfusion to changes in local metabolic demands. Neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) is suspected to be involved in NVC; however, this has not been tested in humans. Our objective was to investigate the effects of nNOS inhibition on NVC in humans. METHODS: We performed a 3-visit partially randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, crossover study in 12 healthy subjects. On each visit, subjects received an intravenous infusion of either S-methyl-L-thiocitrulline (a sel

Quinoxaline 1,4-di-N-Oxide Derivatives: Are They Unselective or Selective Inhibitors?

BACKGROUND: For decades, the quinoxaline 1,4-di-N-oxide ring has been considered a privileged structure to develop new antibacterial, antitumoural, and antiprotozoal agents, among others; however, its mechanism of action is not clear. OBJECTIVE: The main aim of this mini-review was to analyze the mechanism of action of quinoxaline 1,4-di-N-oxide derivatives reported as antibacterial, antitumoural, and antiprotozoal agents. RESULTS: Initially, the mechanism of action of quinoxaline 1,4-di-N-oxide derivatives against bacteria, tumoural cell lines, and parasites have been described as nonspecif

Resin-based iron-manganese binary oxide for phosphate selective removal.

Adsorption technology can effectively remove phosphorus from water and realize phosphorus recovery. Hence, it is used to curb the eutrophication of water and alleviate the crisis caused by the shortage of phosphorus resources. Resin has been attracting increasing interest as an ideal adsorption material; however, its practical application is greatly affected by environmental factors. To solve the competitive adsorption and pore blockage caused by humic acid and coexisting ions during the removal of phosphorus by ion-exchange resin, this study has developed an iron-manganese oxide-modified resi

Pharmacological developments in antihypertensive treatment through nitric oxide-cGMP modulation.

Treatment of hypertension until now has been directed at inhibition of vasoconstriction, of cardiac contractility and of blood volume regulation. Despite the arsenal of drugs available for this purpose, the control of target blood pressure is still a difficult goal to reach in outpatients. The nitric oxide-cyclic guanosine monophosphate signaling is one of the most important mediators of vasodilation. It might therefore be a potential and most welcome drug target for optimization of the treatment of hypertension. In this chapter we review the problems that can occur in this signaling system, t

Design of Ru-Ni diatomic sites for efficient alkaline hydrogen oxidation.

Anion exchange membrane fuel cells are limited by the slow kinetics of alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR). Here, we establish HOR catalytic activities of single-atom and diatomic sites as a function of *H and *OH binding energies to screen the optimal active sites for the HOR. As a result, the Ru-Ni diatomic one is identified as the best active center. Guided by the theoretical finding, we subsequently synthesize a catalyst with Ru-Ni diatomic sites supported on N-doped porous carbon, which exhibits excellent catalytic activity, CO tolerance, and stability for alkaline HOR and is also

Low Concentrations of Oxidized Phospholipids Increase Stress Tolerance of Endothelial Cells.

Oxidized phospholipids (OxPLs) are generated by enzymatic or autooxidation of esterified polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) residues. OxPLs are present in circulation and atherosclerotic plaques where they are thought to induce predominantly proinflammatory and toxic changes in endothelial (ECs) and other cell types. Unexpectedly, we found that low concentrations of OxPLs were not toxic but protected ECs from stress induced by serum deprivation or cytostatic drugs. The protective effect was observed in ECs obtained from different vessels and was monitored using a variety of readouts based on

Trimethylamine N-Oxide Reduces the Susceptibility of Escherichia coli to Multiple Antibiotics.

Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), an important intestinal flora-derived metabolite, plays a role in the development of cardiovascular disease and tumor immunity. Here, we determined the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of antibiotics against Escherichia coli under gradient concentrations of TMAO and performed a bacterial killing analysis. Overall, TMAO (in the range of 10 ~ 100 mM) increased the MIC of quinolones, aminoglycosides, and β-lactams in a concentration-dependent manner, and increased the lethal dose of antibiotics against E. coli. It implies that TMAO is a potential risk for fail
