Pleural effects of indium phosphide in B6C3F1 mice: nonfibrous particulate induced pleural fibrosis.

The mechanism(s) by which chronic inhalation of indium phosphide (InP) particles causes pleural fibrosis is not known. Few studies of InP pleural toxicity have been conducted because of the challenges in conducting particulate inhalation exposures, and because the pleural lesions developed slowly over the 2-year inhalation study. The authors investigated whether InP (1 mg/kg) administered by a single oropharyngeal aspiration would cause pleural fibrosis in male B6C3F1 mice. By 28 days after treatment, protein and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were significantly increased in bronchoalveolar lavag

Systemic translocation of (70)zinc: kinetics following intratracheal instillation in rats.

Mechanisms of particulate matter (PM)-induced cardiotoxicity are not fully understood. Direct translocation of PM-associated metals, including zinc, may mediate this effect. We hypothesized that following a single intratracheal instillation (IT), zinc directly translocates outside of the lungs, reaching the heart. To test this, we used high resolution magnetic sector field inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to measure levels of five stable isotopes of zinc ((64)Zn, (66)Zn, (67)Zn, (68)Zn, (70)Zn), and copper in lungs, plasma, heart, liver, spleen, and kidney of male Wistar Kyoto rats…

Biochemical parameters of plants as indicators of air pollution.

In the present study species like Mangifera indica, Linn., Cassia fistula, Linn., and Eucalyptus hybrid were exposed to different air pollution load for short duration (active biomonitoring). Variation in biochemical parameters like chlorophyll, protein, soluble sugar free amino acid, ascorbic acid, nitrate reductase, superoxide dismutase and peroxidase in the leaves were found to be pollution load dependent. These variations can be used as indicators of air pollution for early diagnosis of stress or as a marker for physiological damage to trees prior to the onset of visible injury symptoms. J

Runs of ventricular and supraventricular tachycardia triggered by air pollution in patients with coronary heart disease.

OBJECTIVE: The authors conducted an investigation of the association between air pollution and arrhythmia. METHODS: A prospective panel study (October 2000-April 2001) was conducted in Erfurt, Germany. Fifty-seven men with coronary heart disease were subjected to six 24-hour electrocardiogram recordings. Runs of supraventricular and ventricular tachycardia were associated with continuous ultrafine particle counts (UFP), accumulation mode particle counts (ACP), PM2.5, and gaseous pollutants. Poisson and linear regression models were applied adjusting for trend, weekday, and meteorologic data.

Air pollution and health in urban areas.

In this paper, recent reviews of the World Health Organization, other review papers, and more recent literature on the human health effects of current air pollution trends in urban areas are reviewed and summarized as follows: Sulphur dioxide. Some studies, but not others, found associations between sulphur dioxide (SO2) exposure and daily mortality and morbidity. Single-pollutant correlations sometimes disappeared when other pollutants, especially suspended particulate matter (SPM), were included. Cross-sectional studies with asthmatics revealed significant, non-threshold relations between SO…

Bioconversion of Agricultural Residues into Nutrient-Enriched Biofertilizers Using Trichoderma sp.: Effects of Substrate Type and Incubation Time.

Improper disposal or open burning of agricultural waste releases smoke, particulate matter, and greenhouse gases, contributing to air pollution and climate change. The utilization of agricultural wastes as substrates for biofertilizer production offers a sustainable approach to waste valorization and nutrient recycling. This study evaluated the effects of agricultural waste type and contact time on the nutrient composition of Trichoderma sp.-based biofertilizer produced from sawdust, rice husk, and guinea corn husk. A factorial experiment was conducted using four substrates and four incubation…

Differential Toxicity of Water-Soluble Versus Water-Insoluble Components of Cowshed PM2.5 on Ovarian Granulosa Cells and the Regulatory Role of Txnip in Overall Toxicity.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5)-induced ovarian damage has attracted widespread attention, but differences in cytotoxicity and underlying mechanisms of water-soluble (WS-PM2.5) and water-insoluble (WIS-PM2.5) fractions are unclear. To investigate potential effects of PM2.5 from livestock farming environments on animal ovaries, PM2.5 samples were collected from large-scale cattle barns. There were significant differences between fractions regarding elemental composition, proportion of water-soluble ions, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon content, and endotoxin concentrations. Novel Approach to Assess the Toxicity of PM2.5 on a Subway Platform Using a Mobile Air-Liquid Interface System and Submerged Exposure.

Subway stations are enclosed environments that can have elevated concentrations of PM2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of <2.5 μm). These particles are primarily generated by mechanical wear from trains and are therefore rich in transition metals and suspected to affect health upon inhalation. To simulate real-world inhalation scenarios, this study aimed to assess the toxicity of airborne subway PM2.5 using a mobile air-liquid interface (ALI) exposure system directly on the platform, using monoculture (A549) and coculture (A549 + dTHP-1) cell models, alongside laboratory sub…

Online characterisation of oxidative potential and reactive oxygen species of fresh and aged aircraft turbine and ship engine particulate emissions.

Anthropogenic particulate matter (PM) emissions from the transport sector are a major contributor to global air pollution and associated adverse health effects. While the health impacts of PM are well-documented, the specific chemical and physical properties driving its toxicity, such as oxidative potential (OP) remain poorly understood and quantified. This study investigates the OP activity of PM emissions from a small jet engine combustion chamber (using JP-8 fuel) and a marine diesel engine (using low sulfur Heavy Fuel Oil, LS-HFO, and Marine Gas Oil, MGO) under fresh and photochemically ag…

Air pollution and undernutrition induce rat alveolar macrophages functional dysregulation and compromise their response to a viral challenge.

Air pollution and undernutrition are major global health problems that frequently coexist in vulnerable populations and may interact to impair pulmonary immune defenses. We investigated how chronic undernutrition influences alveolar macrophage (AM) responses to subchronic particulate matter (PM) exposure and their subsequent responsiveness to a viral-like stimulus. Male Wistar rats were assigned to control or nutritional growth retardation (NGR) groups, either ad libitum feeding or a 20% caloric restriction for 4 weeks, respectively. During this period, animals received intranasal Residual Oil…

Inhalation Bioaccessibility, Pollution Assessment, and Speciation of Heavy Metals in PM2.5RD Road Dust from Urban and Semi-Urban Areas of Pakistan.

Ambient exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) remains a critical global public health concern; however, the speciation and bioaccessibility mechanisms of particle-bound heavy metals within the lung environment are still insufficiently understood. In particular, the role of soluble and insoluble metal species in simulated lung fluids requires further clarification. Road dust, a major contributor to PM2.5, contains heavy metals that pose significant inhalation risks, leading to oxidative stress, DNA damage, and systemic toxicity. This study investigated the contamination characteristics, b…
