Radical prostatectomy significantly impacts the inherent anatomy of the male pelvis and the functional mechanisms of urinary continence. Incontinence has a considerable negative influence on the quality of life of patients, as well as their social and psychological wellbeing. Numerous surgical techniques have been demonstrated to support the preservation of continence during robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). In this in-depth analysis, we give a general summary of the surgical techniques used in RARP and their impact on incontinence rates.

The bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex (BEEC) is an abdominal midline malformation comprising a spectrum of congenital genitourinary abnormalities of the abdominal wall, pelvis, urinary tract, genitalia, anus, and spine. The vast majority of BEEC cases are classified as non-syndromic and the etiology of this malformation is still unknown. This review presents the current knowledge on this multifactorial disorder, including phenotypic and anatomical characterization, epidemiology, proposed developmental mechanisms, existing animal models, and implicated genetic and environmental components.

The specialty evaluation of hip pain, stiffness, and/or dysfunction usually includes patient history, physical examination, and radiographic evaluation. Radiographic views of the hip are not standardized, and basic studies may include an anteroposterior pelvis, anteroposterior hip, frog lateral, and direct lateral of the hip. In this article, we discuss the importance of obtaining a direct lateral radiograph of the hip in all patients being evaluated by a specialist for hip pain and its value in hip arthroplasty care.

Fibroids are ubiquitous in women of the reproductive age group more so in midlife. The cervical fibroids are challenging to operating surgeons because it distorts the surgical anatomy of the pelvis and urogenital system. The metaphor given historically to this condition is apt as the uterus appears like a lantern sitting on the dome of cervical fibroid similar to the dome of the cathedral. Here, we report two cases of cervical fibroid in perimenopausal age group of different sizes managed by following specific steps.

The Kirschner wire (K-wire) is used in the treatment of hip fractures, and migration of a K-wire into the pelvis with resultant colon injury is a very rare complication. We report a case in which a forgotten K-wire passing across the sigmoid colon was accidentally found by screening colonoscopy in a patient with no abdominal symptoms. Surgery was performed to remove the K-wire. Although the migration of a K-wire is extremely rare, it is important for it to be considered in patients with a history of orthopedic surgery.

The problem of retained surgical bodies (RSB) after surgery is an issue for surgeons, hospitals and the entire medical team. They have potentially harmful consequences for the patient as they can be life threatening and usually, a further operation is necessary. The incidence of RSB is between 0.3 to 1.0 per 1,000 abdominal operations, and they occur due to a lack of organisation and communication between surgical staff during the process. Typically, the RSB are surgical sponges and instruments located in the abdomen, retroperitoneum and pelvis.

Buttock (gluteal) pain is commonly experienced by athletes of all ages and activity levels. Evaluation of buttock pain can be challenging because the differential diagnoses are extensive. Symptoms may originate from the pelvis or hip or be referred from the lumbosacral spine or neurovascular structures. Few articles in the literature are dedicated to the primary complaint of buttock pain. The purpose of this article is to provide a clinical algorithm to assist the sports clinician in reaching an accurate diagnosis and initiating the appropriate treatment.

Gynecologic malignancies affect more than 83 000 women in the United States, each year. Because the disease involves the pelvis, many patients have side effects distal to this area in their lower extremities. The differential diagnosis of leg pain can be divided into vascular, neurologic, and musculoskeletal causes. In this review article, we address numerous etiologies of leg pain, reviewing the prevalence of disease, physical examination findings, diagnostic as well as treatment modalities.

Recent technological achievements have enabled the transposition of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with good diagnostic quality into other body regions, especially the abdomen and pelvis. Many emerging and established applications are now being evaluated on the upper abdomen, the liver being the most studied organ. This article discusses imaging strategies for DWI on the upper abdomen, describes the clinical protocol, and reviews the most common clinical applications of DWI on solid abdominal organs.

Aggressive angiomyxoma is a rare, locally aggressive soft tissue tumor that has high propensity for local recurrence. It involves mainly the pelvis, vulva, perineum, vagina and urinary bladder in adult women in the reproductive age. Considering its locally aggressive nature, appropriate management and long-term follow-up is necessary. We describe a case of a 22-year-old young pregnant patient presenting with a large pedunculated swelling on the left labia majora.

Hemangiomas are benign lesions that occur in any part of the body. Genital hemangioma involving the entire penis and scrotum are extremely rare. More rarely they can extend in to the pelvis making preoperative imaging imperative and decisive in treatment. Very few cases have been reported in the medical literature. Hereby, a rare cavernous hemangioma that involves the entire penis, scrotum and extends into perineum and rectum in an 18-year-old male is presented with review of literature.

Actinomycosis is a rare infectious inflammatory disease caused by the bacteria of the Actinomyces species. Infection occurs following damage to the skin or mucous membrane. This report presents a case of a 50-year-old female patient with subfebrile temperature, weight loss and pain, who used to have an intrauterine device. Masses suggestive of an advanced cancer were detected in her pelvis and abdominal cavity. A diagnosis of actinomycosis was made after histopathological examination of the tissue sample.

Presacral tumors are particularly rare in the adult. Schwannomas are neurogenic neoplasms, rarely occurring in the retroperitoneum and the pelvis. Presented herein are the cases of 2 female patients with chronic pelvic pain who were discovered to have presacral schwannomas and were managed laparoscopically. Laparoscopy is a safe and efficient option in approaching benign pelvic tumors and might offer the advantage of better visualization of structures due to the magnification of laparoscopic view, especially in narrow anatomic spaces.

A domestic shorthair cat was presented with quadriparesis and lumbar hyperesthesia that progressed over 4 months. There were linear and amorphous radiopaque masses throughout the soft tissue surrounding the long bones, vertebral bodies, ribs, pelvis, and scapula. The diagnosis of osteochondromatosis was confirmed by histopathology. Unlike previously reported patients with osteochondromatosis, most of the calcified masses in this cat were not connected to the periosteum; some were linear and were arranged parallel to the long bones involved.

We report on an 8-year-old child with avulsions of the left L3, L4 and L5 nerve roots and traumatic meningoceles that were not associated with lumbar spine or pelvic girdle fractures. The patient had a history of a road traffic accident. Plain radiographs of the pelvis revealed left hip dysplasia. The magnetic resonance imaging findings of the lumbar spine are illustrated. The pathogenesis of lumbar nerve root avulsions and their association with ipsilateral hip dysplasia are discussed.

Echinococcosis, an endemic disease on the Asian continent, is caused by ecinococcus granulosus and rarely ecinococcus alveolaris. Although it occurs frequently in the liver and the lung, it can be localized in all tissues and organs. The purpose of this study is to report a rare localization and the complication of hydatid cyst in the pelvis : it pushed forward and upward the urine bladder and there was bilateral hydroureteronephrosis causing uraemia because of outflow obstruction. To our knowledge, a similar case has not been published before in English literature.

Chyluria is a urological manifestation of lymphatic system disease. Sclerotherapy of the renal pelvis (RPIS) using 1% silver nitrate, along with diethyl carbamazine, is the treatment most frequently used. Massive haematuria due to intrarenal aneurysm following RPIS has not been reported. A case is described here of arterial haemorrhage following instillation of silver nitrate which was treated by coil embolization. The haematuria was immediately stopped and the renal function returned to normal gradually.

Eleven hips in nine children were identified with acetabular dysplasia, which presented as developmental dislocation of the hip. The clinical signs of dislocation--tight abductors and a limp, associated with a plain radiograph showing the femoral head protruding from the pelvis--were not evident among this group. Arthrography showed acetabular dysplasia but no dislocation. Accurate grading of hip dysplasia can help to avoid such misdiagnoses, which have presented a recurring problem in the management tof this condition.

The problem of a foreign body left in the operative field is rarely discussed in the medical literature despite the multiple complications it might cause. The purpose of this article is to report on a patient who developed an enterovaginal fistula secondary to a pack left in the pelvis to temponade post-hysterectomy bleeding. The fistula closed spontaneously after three months of expectant management. Expectant management of enterovaginal fistulae is feasible. Adequate reporting of the operative procedures performed and the use of tagged sponges is a must.
