Reported neurological symptoms after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 infection: A systematic diagnostic approach.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Following increasing demands of patients with suspected neurological symptoms after infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the Department of Neurology at the Medical University of Vienna established a new outpatient clinic to systematically assess, diagnose, and document neurological complaints potentially associated with a prior SARS-CoV-2 infection. METHODS: The data presented here include prospectively collected 156 outpatients from May 2021 to April 2022. Patients underwent semistandardized interviewing about symptoms with

Suicides in the Centre of Portugal: seven years analysis.

As one of the more specific and distinctive problems of human beings, suicide has been investigated with increasing attention all over the world. Several risk factors have been described as well as limitations arising from their study. The World Health Organization estimates that this scourge affects one million people annually, which corresponds to one death every 40s worldwide. According to recent studies, Portugal, despite the good rates (10 suicide deaths per 100,000 inhabitants), had shown an increasing trend among younger people. This work aims to characterize the evolution of the suicid

Structural brain scanning in psychiatric patients: a further look.

BACKGROUND: Indications for computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) scans of the brain in psychiatric patients are not clearly defined. This survey attempted to refine indications suggested by an earlier survey. METHOD: All brain scans ordered in a psychiatric teaching hospital were surveyed over a period of approximately 23 months. A revised order sheet provided information about the assumed need for scanning as well as indicated those factors from the previous survey most likely to reveal pertinent information. Scan results were later correlated with this information. RESULTS

Non-fatal burden of disease due to mental disorders in the Netherlands.

PURPOSE: To estimate the disease burden due to 15 mental disorders at both individual and population level. METHODS: Using a population-based survey (NEMESIS, N = 7,056) the number of years lived with disability per one million population were assessed. This was done with and without adjustment for comorbidity. RESULTS: At individual level, major depression, dysthymia, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, social phobia, eating disorder and schizophrenia are the disorders most markedly associated with health-related quality of life decrement. However, at population level, the number of affected

The effectiveness of a group-based acceptance and commitment additive therapy on rehabilitation of female outpatients with chronic headache: preliminary findings reducing 3 dimensions of headache impact.

OBJECTIVE: Examine whether acceptance and commitment additive therapy is effective in reducing the experience of sensory pain, disability, and affective distress because of chronic headache in a sample of outpatient Iranian females. BACKGROUND: Chronic headaches have a striking impact on sufferers in terms of pain, disability, and affective distress. Although several Acceptance and Commitment Therapy outcome studies for chronic pain have been conducted, their findings cannot be completely generalized to chronic headaches because headache-related treatment outcome studies have a different emph

Othello syndrome. Preventing a tragedy when treating patients with delusional disorders.

Othello syndrome, sometimes referred to as delusional, pathological, morbid, or erotic jealousy, is a rare delusional disorder with high-risk implications. This article provides an overview of Othello syndrome and includes an individual example as well as a review of the literature. Pharmacological interventions and dialectical behavior therapy are discussed as options for pathological jealousy. Nursing considerations and assessment strategies of delusional jealousy are described for identification and evaluation of risk factors. Patient safety is addressed, and collaborative interventions are

Involuntary commitment and detainment in adolescent psychiatric inpatient care.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether adolescents committed to psychiatric inpatient care are the most disturbed, and whether psychosocial factors other than psychiatric symptoms are associated with commitment to and detainment in psychiatric care among adolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The case histories of 187 13- to 17-year-old adolescents consecutively admitted to the study clinic were scrutinized with the help of a structured data collection form. Psychiatric, demographic and family-related characteristics of those referred involuntarily (n = 93) and voluntarily (n = 94), and those detained i

Development of the Bipolar Inventory of Symptoms Scale: concurrent validity, discriminant validity and retest reliability.

Scales used in studies of bipolar disorder have generally been standardized with major depressive or hospitalized manic patients. A clinician rated scale based on a semi-structured interview for persons with bipolar disorder, with comprehensive coverage of bipolar symptomatology, is needed. We report concurrent, divergent and convergent psychometric reliability, discriminant validity and relationship to a measure of overall function for a new psychometric rating instrument. A primarily outpatient sample of 224 subjects was assessed using the Bipolar Inventory of Symptoms Scale (BISS). The BISS

A comparative evaluation of panicogenic processes and quality of life in a sample of non-clinical panickers and age and sex matched non-panicking controls.

Contemporary models of panic attacks suggest that panic problems exist on a continuum and highlight the need to understand what differentiates persons who have never had a panic attack versus persons who have had panic attacks but have not yet developed panic disorder (i.e., non-clinical panickers). Accordingly, the present study evaluated several theoretically-relevant factors that were expected to distinguish a sample of (conservatively defined) non-clinical panickers (n=72) from an age and sex-matched comparison sample of non-panicking controls (n=72). As expected, panickers were characteri

The moderating role of health fear on the relation between smoking status and panic symptoms among adolescents.

The present study examined the moderating role of health fear on the concurrent relation between smoking status and panic attack symptoms among 249 adolescents (132 females, M(age)=14.86 years). As hypothesized, youth high in health fear reported elevations in panic attack symptoms, whereas this relation was relatively weak among those low in health fear. Importantly, these associations were significant after controlling for age, gender, negative affectivity, and anxiety sensitivity. Also as expected, health fear did not moderate the association between smoking status and depressive symptoms,

The emotion reactivity scale: development, evaluation, and relation to self-injurious thoughts and behaviors.

Prior research has examined the relations between various facets of emotion and psychopathology, with a great deal of recent work highlighting the importance of emotion regulation strategies. Much less attention has been given to the examination of emotion reactivity. This study reports on the development and evaluation of the Emotion Reactivity Scale (ERS), a 21-item self-report measure of emotion sensitivity, intensity, and persistence, among a sample of 87 adolescents and young adults. Factor analysis revealed a single factor of emotion reactivity best characterized the data. The ERS showed

Comparison of scores for abused and nonabused young adults on the Psychological Trauma and Resources Scale.

The Psychological Trauma and Psychological Resources Scale has been developed to identify adolescents and adults who have experienced traumatic events, i.e., physical, sexual, or emotional abuse and neglect. The scale also attempts to identify the presence of compensatory or resource factors such as social support that may serve to ameliorate the effects of traumatic events. 98 college participants who reported a history of abuse were compared with 464 nonabused students on the seven subscales. As predicted, the abused participants reported significantly more incidents of abuse and neglect tha

Eating disorders among children and adolescents.

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa represent extreme manifestations of weight control patterns in adolescents. When they occur in children, they often are associated with more severe psychiatric or family dysfunction. However, rather than framing these conditions as purely psychiatric problems, it is more useful to approach them in terms of development. Then, the pediatrician can be positioned to address the various biologic, psychological, and social issues presenting in the individual. Furthermore, the pediatrician already is familiar with the principles of managing chronic illnesses, and

A follow-up of chronic patients committed to outpatient treatment.

Data collected in a statewide study of psychiatric patients involved in civil commitment hearings in North Carolina were used to evaluate the effectiveness of outpatient commitment as a less restrictive alternative to involuntary hospitalization. Six months after the commitment hearings, outcome data for patients who were committed to outpatient treatment were compared with outcome data for patients who were released and patients who were involuntarily hospitalized. All three groups comprised patients who were chronically mentally ill, had previously been hospitalized, and had histories of med

Modulation of aggression by neuropeptide Y: receptor pharmacology, neural circuitry, and psychiatric relevance.

Violence and aggression arise from dynamic interactions among genetic liability, neurobiological regulation, and environmental stressors, mediated by a distributed "core aggression circuit" encompassing the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, hypothalamus, and brainstem. Neuropeptide Y (NPY), a highly conserved 36-amino acid neuromodulator, has emerged as a key stress-buffering and emotion-regulatory agent with relevance to impulsive and reactive aggression. This review synthesizes translational evidence linking NPY biology to aggression and violence by integrating molecular mechanisms, receptor phar
