AIM: To find and describe the total population of persons in New Zealand born before 1940 with lifelong intellectual disability and to provide health and services data for regional health authorities.
METHOD: An intensive community based case finding process identified 197 (19%) people not known to the two major service producers, the public hospitals and New Zealand Society for the Intellectually Handicapped (IHC). Prime caregivers provided information about personal characteristics, health status, and services utilisation and needs.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) may remain clinically silent and undiagnosed until patients reach advanced age. Theory and empirical evidence support a relationship between the eating disorders (anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa) and alcoholism. This study examines the co-prevalence and characteristics of these disorders among two populations of adult women: those presenting for treatment of alcoholism and those referred to a specialized eating disorders programme. Clustering of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease has been reported in several countries. The authors review these reports, and they describe their statistical analysis of clustering among 329 cases that died in France during 1968-1982. Paris was found to have a much higher case rate than the rest of France, while some large areas in the north and west had remarkably few cases relative to their populations.
