Clonal mesenchymal stem cells derived from human bone marrow can differentiate into hepatocyte-like cells in injured livers of SCID mice.

There is increasing evidence that human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) can be a valuable, transplantable source of hepatocytes. Most of the hMSCs preparations used in these studies were likely heterogeneous cell populations, isolated by adherence to plastic surfaces or by density gradient centrifugation. Therefore, the participation of other unknown trace cell populations cannot be rigorously discounted. Here we report the isolation and establishment of a cloned human MSC line (chMSC) from human bone marrow primary culture, through which we confirmed the hepatic differentiation capability of a

Population structure of the lyme borreliosis spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi in the western black-legged tick (Ixodes pacificus) in Northern California.

Factors potentially contributing to the lower incidence of Lyme borreliosis (LB) in the far-western than in the northeastern United States include tick host-seeking behavior resulting in fewer human tick encounters, lower densities of Borrelia burgdorferi-infected vector ticks in peridomestic environments, and genetic variation among B. burgdorferi spirochetes to which humans are exposed. We determined the population structure of B. burgdorferi in over 200 infected nymphs of the primary bridging vector to humans, Ixodes pacificus, collected in Mendocino County, CA. This was accomplished by seq

Intervention with a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet does not influence the timing of menopause.

BACKGROUND: Later age at menopause is associated with a greater risk of breast cancer. Dietary factors may at least partially influence breast cancer risk through an effect on the age at menopause. OBJECTIVE: We studied the effect of a low-fat, high-carbohydrate (LFHC) dietary intervention on the timing of menopause in women with greater risk of breast cancer. DESIGN: The study population included participants from an LFHC dietary intervention trial for the prevention of breast cancer in women with extensive mammographic density, a strong risk factor for breast cancer. Women who were premeno

Changes in field potentials and membrane currents in rat sensorimotor cortex following repeated tetanization of the corpus callosum in vivo.

Repeated, daily tetanization of the corpus callosum induces lasting changes in sensorimotor cortex field potential responses, but the synaptic populations that mediate these responses and support long-term potentiation (LTP) have not been characterized. Current source density analyses of field responses were compared between control animals and those in which LTP was induced by 10 daily series of tetanizations. Tetanization and paired-pulse stimulation (100 ms interval) enhanced the duration of initial (approximately 3 ms onset) deep-negative population spike activity generated by a current si

The epidemiology of schistosomiasis in Burundi and its consequences for control.

This paper summarizes the results of a series of studies on the epidemiology, morbidity and transmission of Schistosoma mansoni in Burundi, and discusses their consequences for control. The main endemic area is the Imbo lowland, consisting of the Rusizi plain, the urban focus of Bujumbura, and the shores of lake Tanganyika; a small, new focus was discovered in the highlands, around lake Cohoha. Distribution studies on 5-10% population samples with duplicate 28 mg Kato smears in these 4 foci showed prevalences of 33%, 26%, 17%, 19% and mean (positive) egg loads of 110, 105, 92, 144 eggs/g, resp

District-level ecological analysis of the association between stunting and infectious diseases among children under 2 years in Rwanda, 2020-2024.

BACKGROUND: Stunting among children under 2 years remains a major public health problem in Rwanda despite substantial investments in nutrition, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), and maternal-child health. Infectious diseases, particularly diarrheal diseases, malaria, respiratory infections, and schistosomiasis, significantly contribute to growth faltering; however, their association and interconnectivity with stunting in Rwanda have not been comprehensively examined. METHODS: This district-level ecological study analyzed data from 2020 and 2022--2024 by combining aggregated stunting prev

Wildlife hunting and the increased risk of leprosy transmission in the tropical Americas: a pathogeographical study.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy remains a persistent public health challenge, where human-to-human transmission of Mycobacterium leprae via respiratory droplets is well established. In the tropical Americas, growing evidence implicates armadillos as important zoonotic reservoirs, particularly through direct contact during hunting and handling. However, such transmission has so far been considered rare and highly localised. This study provides a comprehensive spatial analysis of the role of armadillo hunting in human leprosy transmission, quantifying its contribution to disease prevalence and identifying g

Assessment of the Safety, Efficacy, and Benefit of Empagliflozin in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and Heart Failure With Reduced Ejection Fraction (HFrEF) at High Risk for Cardiovascular Events.

Background Since the increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), heart failure coexisting with it has had a significant impact on clinical management and prognosis. Patients with T2DM and heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) have increased mortality and morbidity. Empagliflozin, a sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, is widely acknowledged to reduce cardiovascular risk in T2DM patients. We wanted to assess the composite outcomes of heart failure, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization following the start of empagliflozin therapy in the Saudi popula

Detection of germinal center B-cell lymphoma in archival specimens: critical evaluation of Bcl-6 protein expression in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the tonsil.

Expression of Bcl-6 and CD10, markers for the tumor of the germinal center (GC) B-cell derivation, has been studied in primary diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCLs) of the lymph node, gastrointestinal tract, and mediastinum. In these studies, the coexpression rate of CD10 and Bcl-6 was relatively constant at 30% approximately 40%, but the frequency of Bcl-6+ tumors varied from 55% to 100%, raising doubts about the usefulness of Bcl-6 expression in identifying the tumor of GC B-cell derivation. Because the expression of Bcl-6 in tumors of non-GC B-cell origin has recently been reported, we cr

Risk factors for perimenopausal fractures: a prospective study.

This prospective study was aimed at determining the risk factors for the development of fractures in perimenopausal women. The study group (n = 3068) was comprised of a stratified population sample of women aged between 47 and 56 years. During the follow-up period of 3.6 years, 257 (8.4%) of the women sustained a total of 295 fractures. After adjustment for covariates, the relative risk (RR) of sustaining a fracture was found to be 1.4 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.2-1.6] for a 1 standard deviation (SD) decrease in the spinal and femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD). Women with a previous

Outcomes following intravenous bisphosphonate infusion in pediatric patients: A 7-year retrospective chart review.

INTRODUCTION: Intravenous bisphosphonates (IV BP) have been used to treat children with osteoporosis for many years. Favorable side effect profile and improvements in bone mineral density (BMD) have been demonstrated in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a primary form of osteoporosis in pediatrics. Less is known about the safety of IV BP in children with secondary osteoporosis or glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIO). We aimed to determine the prevalence of both acute and long-term side effects and assess the efficacy of IV BP treatment to increase bone mineral density in pediatr
