Stimulation of lymphocytes from rheumatoid arthritis patients by mitogens and IgG.

In the first part of this work patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), 36 cases and normal subjects, 49 cases have been studied by lymphocyte cultures stimulated by phytohaemagglutinin (PHA), Concanavalin A (Con A), pokeweed mitogen (PWM) and Con A convalently bound to sepharose 4 B (Con A-S). The comparisons between the two groups have shown a significant difference between the RA lymphocytes and the control lymphocytes stimulated by PHA and Con A. However no statistical difference has been found between the two lymphocytes populations stimulated by PWM and Con A-S. In view to determining th

Social contact patterns in the United Kingdom following the COVID-19 pandemic: The Reconnect cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Close-contact and respiratory infectious diseases are spread through social interactions. Measuring these interactions has transformed our ability to understand transmission and control these infections. Social contact patterns were disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic and have been affected by wider demographic, cultural, and workplace changes since then. METHODS AND FINDINGS: To estimate post-pandemic social contact patterns in the United Kingdom, we conducted a cross-sectional social contact survey from November 2024 to March 2025 on a nationally representative sample of part

Ankylosing spondylitis: an independent risk factor for nephrolithiasis and the prognostic value of follow-up CT.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates nephrolithiasis frequency in Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients compared to general population. Additionally, longitudinally assessing changes in renal CT abnormalities, it seeks to provide radiological evidence for early diagnosis of nephrolithiasis in AS patients. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 115 patients fulfilling the Modified New York Criteria for AS and 115 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were included. Renal ultrasound and/or CT imaging were carried out to evaluate presence of nephrolithiasis. Participants were categorized into three

Characteristics and causes in patients presenting with convulsions in the Danish prehospital setting.

BACKGROUND: Convulsing patients are one of the most common reasons for dispatch in the prehospital system. Determining the underlying cause of symptoms is paramount for both patient safety and determining the correct patient course. This study aims to describe the population of patients presenting with convulsions at first contact with an anesthesiologist-staffed mobile emergency care unit, to uncover the underlying reason for the convulsions, and to establish the outcome of the patient and correlate this to patient age. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was conducted through a manual

Group-based trajectory modeling to assess adherence to chronic urate-lowering therapies among commercially insured US adults with gout.

BACKGROUND: The benefits of urate-lowering therapies (ULTs) for the long-term management of gout are well established. However, suboptimal adherence remains a significant challenge, resulting in increased gout flares and higher health care utilization. The proportion of days covered (PDC) is commonly used to assess adherence but provides only a single value that fails to distinguish among individuals with differing and dynamic adherence patterns over time. Understanding fluctuations in adherence and their associated characteristics can inform interventions aimed at improving adherence. OBJECT

Brain Health Outcomes in Sexual and Gender Minority Groups: Results From the All of Us Research Program.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) groups have been historically underrepresented in neurologic research, and their brain health disparities are unknown. We aim to evaluate whether SGM persons are at higher risk of adverse brain health outcomes compared with cisgender straight (non-SGM) individuals. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in the All of Us Research Program, a US population-based study, including all participants with information on gender identity and sexual orientation. We used baseline questionnaires to identify sexual minority (lesbian, gay, b

The relationship between university student help-seeking intentions and well-being outcomes.

University represents a time of both great uncertainty and change as well as a time of opportunity and learning. University students represent a population both at a higher risk of experiencing poor mental health and diagnosis and a population with relatively greater access and communication of both mental health literacy resources and mental health support services. Despite this, we consistently see low intention of help-seeking for mental health services or health services, with a clear preference shown for personal contacts such as friends or parents. To understand help-seeking intentions a

Improving health-care planning for fracture patients in Türkiye: insights from a nationwide study.

BACKGROUND: The distribution of fractures may vary according to age and gender. In a country like Türkiye, which has high population density and covers a large geographical area, it is important to understand the regional variations in fractures and identify the health institutions in which patients seek treatment to plan new health-care investments effectively. The objective of our study was to investigate the distribution of fractures across the seven regions of Türkiye considering age, gender, and the level of health institutions the patients visited. METHODS: Between January 2021 and May

Modifiable risk factors for multiple sclerosis have consistent directions of effect across diverse ethnic backgrounds: a nested case-control study in an English population-based cohort.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis is a leading cause of non-traumatic neurological disability among young adults worldwide. Prior studies have identified modifiable risk factors for multiple sclerosis in cohorts of White ethnicity, such as infectious mononucleosis, smoking, and obesity during adolescence/early adulthood. It is unknown whether modifiable exposures for multiple sclerosis have a consistent impact on risk across ethnic groups. AIM: To determine whether modifiable risk factors for multiple sclerosis have similar effects across diverse ethnic backgrounds. METHODS: We conducted a nest

Clinical significance of hepatic function in Graves disease with type 2 diabetic mellitus: A single-center retrospective cross-sectional study in Taiwan.

Graves disease (GD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) both impair liver function; we therefore explored the possibility of a relationship among diabetic control, thyroid function, and liver function. This retrospective, cross-sectional study compared serum liver function biomarkers of primary GD patients in a single center between 2016 and 2020, derived from clinical databases, and clarified the correlation of liver function in GD patients with or without T2DM. Furthermore, the diabetes mellitus group was divided into glycated hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) <6.5% group and ≥6.5% group to further ana

Optimal Endometrial Preparation Protocols for Frozen-thawed Embryo Transfer Cycles by Maternal Age.

This retrospective cohort study aimed to explore the optimal endometrial preparation protocols among different maternal age groups. A total of 16,867 frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) cycles were categorized into three groups based on endometrial preparation protocols: Natural cycle (NC n = 3893), artificial cycles (AC, n = 11456) and AC with GnRH-a pretreatment (AC+GnRH-a, n = 1518). To account for repeat cycles, a generalized estimating equation (GEE) method was applied to examine the associations between cycle regimens and pregnancy outcomes. Subgroup analyses were conducted to evaluate t

Effect of prebiotic and synbiotic supplementation in diet on growth performance, small intestinal morphology, stress, and bacterial population under high stocking density condition of broiler chickens.

The current study investigated the effect of prebiotic mannan-oligosaccharide (MOS) and synbiotic (MOS mixed with Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis) on growth performance and bacterial population under high stocking density (HSD) conditions in broilers. A total of 605 one-day-old male Arbor Acres broiler chickens were randomly assigned to 4 treatments: normal stocking density (NSD; 30 kg/m2 fed basal diets), HSD (40 kg/m2 fed basal diets), HSD chickens fed 0.1% prebiotic (HSDp), and HSD fed 0.1% synbiotic (HSDs). At 35 D of age, the body weight of HSD and HSDp were poorer than NSD g

Lipoprotein(a) Levels and the Risk of Myocardial Infarction Among 7 Ethnic Groups.

BACKGROUND: Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] levels predict the risk of myocardial infarction (MI) in populations of European ancestry; however, few data are available for other ethnic groups. Furthermore, differences in isoform size distribution and the associated Lp(a) concentrations have not fully been characterized between ethnic groups. METHODS: We studied 6086 cases of first MI and 6857 controls from the INTERHEART study that were stratified by ethnicity and adjusted for age and sex. A total of 775 Africans, 4443 Chinese, 1352 Arabs, 1856 Europeans, 1469 Latin Americans, 1829 South Asians, and 12

High dose vitamin D supplementation does not rescue bone loss following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in female rats.

Postoperative bone loss and increased fracture risk associated with Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) have been attributed to vitamin D/calcium malabsorption and resultant secondary hyperparathyroidism (HPT). Adequate vitamin D supplementation (VDS), particularly in an older female population, reduces incidence of secondary HPT but the effect on bone loss and fracture risk remains unclear. To investigate whether VDS corrects the RYGB bone phenotype, 41 obese adult female rats were randomized to RYGB with 1000 IU (R1000) or 5000 IU (R5000) vitamin D/kg food or a sham surgical procedure with eithe

Targeting under-diagnosis in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia: a model approach for rare diseases?

BACKGROUND: Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), a rare autosomal dominant disease, is considered under-diagnosed. Our primary objective was to provide evidence of under-diagnosis of HHT in a North American population. We hypothesized that variation would exist in the diagnosed prevalence (D-prevalence) across regions in the province of Ontario, Canada and across age groups, due to under-diagnosis in certain groups. Our secondary objective was to collect data regarding contact and local access to consult specialists by HHT patients to help guide potential future diagnostic programs. M

Prevalence of common disease-associated variants in Asian Indians.

BACKGROUND: Asian Indians display a high prevalence of diseases linked to changes in diet and environment that have arisen as their lifestyle has become more westernized. Using 1200 genome-wide polymorphisms in 432 individuals from 15 Indian language groups, we have recently shown that: (i) Indians constitute a distinct population-genetic cluster, and (ii) despite the geographic and linguistic diversity of the groups they exhibit a relatively low level of genetic heterogeneity. RESULTS: We investigated the prevalence of common polymorphisms that have been associated with diseases, such as ath

Decline in the prevalence of spina bifida and anencephaly by race/ethnicity: 1995-2002.

OBJECTIVE: In an effort to reduce the occurrence of neural tube defects (NTDs), folic acid fortification of US enriched grain products was authorized by the Food and Drug Administration in March 1996 and required by January 1998. Fortification has been shown to result in an important decline in the prevalence of spina bifida and anencephaly in the general US population; however, fortification's impact on specific racial/ethnic groups has not been well described. We sought to characterize the decline in the prevalence of spina bifida and anencephaly among specific racial/ethnic groups during th

Associations of aortic and mitral regurgitation with body composition and myocardial energy expenditure in adults with hypertension: the Hypertension Genetic Epidemiology Network study.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that aortic regurgitation, mitral valve regurgitation, or both are associated with lower body mass index, an index of body adiposity. However, the relations of valvular regurgitation to body composition and myocardial bioenergetic expenditure have not been previously investigated in a population-based sample. METHODS: We selected 1496 patients with hypertension who did not have diabetes mellitus to participate in the Hypertension Genetic Epidemiology Network (HyperGEN) study. We excluded participants with severe aortic or mitral stenosis or with known coronary

Trends in Cardiovascular Disease Prevalence by Income Level in the United States.

IMPORTANCE: Income disparity between persons with the most resources (the top 20% of earners) and the remainder of the population in the United States has dramatically widened over the past few decades. Given the well-established association between income and health, this increasing income gap may provide insights into the dynamics of cardiovascular disease (CVD) burden among adults in the US. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the contribution of people in the highest-resources group and the remainder of the population to the burden of CVD, and to estimate the trends in the prevalence of CVD for the 2
