Asterixis after unilateral stroke: lesion location of 30 patients.

The author describes 30 consecutive patients with unilateral stroke who had asterixis on presentation. The lesion location was as follows: thalamus in 19 (mostly, ventrolateral nucleus), frontal lobe in six, lenticulocapsular area in one, midbrain in two, and the cerebellum in two patients. Four patients had bilateral asterixis, and two patients with cerebellar lesions had ipsilateral asterixis. The asterixis may be caused by the abnormal control of arm posture maintenance due to functional dysregulation of the brainstem-spinal tracts from the cerebello-brainstem-thalamo-frontal lobe system.

Overuse syndromes of the hand and wrist.

Overuse syndromes are one of the most common occupational illnesses treated by primary care providers. Their pathophysiology parallels that of tenosynovitis. Occupational risk factors for overuse syndromes include repetition, high force, awkward joint posture, direct pressure, and vibration. Initial treatment is aimed at preventing fibrosis through rest, immobilization, and anti-inflammatory agents. Treatment must include identification and adjustment of occupational risk factors. Specific overuse syndromes are discussed, including tenosynovitis of the dorsal wrist extensor compartments and fl

[The cervicobrachial syndrome in women in the metal-working industry].

All metal workers from a metal-working industry (eight women) who operated pressing, cutting and boring machines were found to have cervicobrachial syndrome. Their job involved forced-sitting body posture and repetitive movements. These are particularly important risk factors at the workplace for the occurrence and development of cervicobrachial syndrome. The workers demanded medical assistance at 12 years of work and an average age of 32.1 years. The working chair of poor ergonomic design was established as a major cause of the early occurrence of cervicobrachial syndrome.

Suspected lead toxicosis in a bald eagle.

An immature bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) was submitted to the University of Maryland, College Park, for clinical examination. The bird was thin, had green watery feces, and was unable to maintain itself in upright posture. Following radiography, the bird went into respiratory distress and died. Numerous lead shot were recovered from the gizzard, and chemical analysis of liver and kidney tissue revealed 22.9 and 11.3 ppm lead, respectively. The clinical signs, necropsy findings, and chemical analysis of the eagle were compatible with lead toxicosis.

Gastric emptying following vagotomy and antrectomy and proximal gastric vagotomy.

Gastric emptying of solid meals labelled with 129Cs was studied in patients for up to one year after vagotomy and antrectomy or after proximal gastric vagotomy. Significant delay was found one month after vagotomy and antrectomy but this had returned to normal by six months. No delay was found after proximal gastric vagotomy. The effect of posture on gastric emptying was also studied in the same subjects. No significant differences were found between gastric emptying in the supine or sitting positions after solid meals.

Responsiveness and minimal clinically important changes of surface topography parameters in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis: results from the schroth exercise trial.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) affects 2-3% of adolescents, causing spinal curvature and functional limitations. Traditional assessment using the Cobb angle may only partially capture patient concerns about aesthetics. The Schroth scoliosis-specific exercises (SSE), focusing on posture correction, have shown promise for reducing the Cobb angle and preventing progression, though research on its cosmetic impact is limited. Surface topography (ST) offers a radiation-free alternative to assess AIS, but determining what is a meaningful change for patients remains underexplored.

Association between intermittent low-back pain and superior cluneal nerve entrapment neuropathy.

OBJECT Superior cluneal nerve (SCN) entrapment neuropathy (SCNEN) is a cause of low-back pain (LBP) that can be misdiagnosed as a lumbar spine disorder. The clinical features and etiology of LBP remain poorly understood. In this study, 5 patients with intermittent LBP due to SCNEN who had previously received conservative treatment underwent surgery. The findings are reported and the etiology of LBP is discussed to determine whether it is attributable to SCNEN. METHODS Intermittent LBP is defined as a clinical condition in which pain is induced by standing or walking but is absent at rest. Betw

Effect of rest duration on recovery from repeated exercise in near-market-weight pigs.

The process of transportation can be seen as a succession of stressors, from which pigs may not have time to recover before slaughter. The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which the duration of the rest time given to near-market-weight pigs after an initial exposure to exercise affected their recovery from subsequent exercise. Eighteen groups of 3 gilts were exercised (Ex1) through a standard handling course, including two 19° ramps, and then were held in a holding pen for either 35 (RT35), 75 (RT75), or 150 (RT150) min (Rest Period 1, RP1). Afterward, pigs were exercised a sec

Atlas-based whole-body segmentation of mice from low-contrast Micro-CT data.

This paper presents a fully automated method for atlas-based whole-body segmentation in non-contrast-enhanced Micro-CT data of mice. The position and posture of mice in such studies may vary to a large extent, complicating data comparison in cross-sectional and follow-up studies. Moreover, Micro-CT typically yields only poor soft-tissue contrast for abdominal organs. To overcome these challenges, we propose a method that divides the problem into an atlas constrained registration based on high-contrast organs in Micro-CT (skeleton, lungs and skin), and a soft tissue approximation step for low-c

Effectiveness of Telerehabilitation in Individuals with Upper Crossed Syndrome Across Diverse Age Demographics: Study Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Upper crossed syndrome (UCS), characterized by muscular imbalances and postural misalignments such as forward head posture and rounded shoulders, is increasingly prevalent among sedentary populations. Traditional rehabilitation often lacks adherence and supervision, whereas telerehabilitation enhances both through real-time remote supervision. However, limited evidence exists comparing the effectiveness of telerehabilitation and home exercise programs for managing UCS across age groups, particularly regarding age-specific adherence and clinical outcomes. This study aims to compare

Not just alignment: body shape influences adult spinal deformity biomechanics.

PURPOSE: Adult spinal deformity (ASD) alters sagittal alignment and trunk centre of mass location, increasing spinal loading. Current clinical assessment of ASD primarily focuses on alignment parameters disregarding patient's body shape variability. This study aimed to evaluate the relative effects of spinal sagittal alignment and body mass distribution (i.e., body shape) on spinal loads and trunk centre of mass location in upright-posture and forward flexion. METHODS: Sagittal alignments of 754 patients with ASD were obtained from clinical data. Trunk mass distributions were assessed in adul

Ab Initio Binocular Formulation of Listing's Law.

Human eyes do not have perfectly aligned optical components; the fovea is displaced from the posterior pole, and the crystalline lens is tilted away from the eye's optical axis. Important in the study of vision quality, it is included here in binocular and oculomotor research. In the binocular system, with the eye's optical asymmetry, all axes differ. The eye's posture change is decomposed into the torsion-free part that gives the change in visual axis direction and the torsional part that best approximates the rotation about the lens's optical axis. This geometric formulation, supported by co

Detecting physiological stress responses in daily life using additional heart rate: Association with individual characteristics and affective states.

Repeated physiological stress responding in daily life is a main mediator of the association between chronic stress and somatic disease. Scalable methods to detect physiological stress responses in daily life are lacking. A potential solution is "additional heart rate" (aHR), which estimates cardiac autonomic responses to psychological stress by subtracting the expected heart rate based on physical activity and posture from the observed heart rate. Here, we identified prolonged periods (>6 min) of substantial increases (>10 BPM) in aHR (aHR periods) in 24-hour recordings of electrocardiogram a

A novel multimodal AI framework for early diagnosis of idiopathic Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder marked by motor symptoms, but early diagnosis is challenging due to symptom overlap with other conditions and a lack of definitive biomarkers (clinical assessments). In this study, we propose a novel multimodal artificial intelligence (AI)-based decision support system aimed at the early diagnosis of idiopathic PD. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first framework to enable the synchronous analysis of four distinct modalities: walking, facial expression, voice, and posture, whereas prior studies have typically focused

Effects of dual-axis orientation disparities and visuo-vestibular cue conflicts on perspective taking.

Spatial perspective taking is critical for collaboration in extreme environments such as space and deep-sea operations, yet previous studies have only considered single-axis orientation disparities. This study investigates the effects of dual-axis orientation disparities and visuo-vestibular cue conflicts on this ability. We combined level-2 perspective taking (VPT-2) and own body transformation (OBT) tasks, incorporating eight longitudinal and sagittal axis orientation disparities (0°, 45°, 90°, 135°, 180°) between the avatars and the participants, and three participant postures (upright, 30°

Seamless vital sign monitoring with fiber optic sensing technology: validating the sitting SMART MAT for community health in static and mobile conditions.

BACKGROUND: Continuous vital sign monitoring is critical but often labor-intensive. Fiberoptic technologies, like the SMART MAT, offer non-invasive assessment. Adapting this for a seated posture addresses clinical needs by promoting safe patient mobilization and reducing complications associated with prolonged bed rest. OBJECTIVES: To validate the accuracy of the sitting SMART MAT for respiratory rate (RR), heart rate (HR), oxygen saturation (SpO2), and systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP/DBP) against established clinical reference standards. METHODS: This cross-sectional study compar

Clinical Effectiveness of Continuous Pressure Monitoring Systems for Pressure Ulcer Prevention: A Scoping Review.

There are many circumstances where individuals with limited mobility are exposed to prolonged postures increasing the risk of pressure ulcers. Technologies have been developed to monitor posture, mobility and pressure exposure; however, their effectiveness in different clinical settings is unknown. The aim of this scoping review was to assess clinical studies using continuous pressure monitoring for the prevention and/or treatment of pressure ulcers. A scoping review of the literature was conducted using the PRISMA-ScR framework. Clinical-based studies were included which used continuous press

Regional lumbar alignment, physiological variation, and pelvic incidence in healthy adults: Emphasis on the lumbosacral junction.

The acquisition of habitual bipedal posture required substantial reorganization of the human spine and pelvis, including the development of lumbar lordosis. While global lumbar alignment has been extensively studied, the anatomical relationship between regional lumbar lordosis and pelvic incidence in healthy adults remains incompletely understood. In this cross-sectional study, 154 rigorously screened healthy adults aged 20-76 years underwent standing whole-body EOS imaging, simultaneous force plate balance assessment, and body composition analysis. Early Motor Signs in Pathologically Verified Alzheimer's Disease and Lewy Body Disease.

BACKGROUND: The neuropathologies of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Lewy body disease (LBD) commonly co-occur. Parkinsonism is the hallmark feature in LBD but it can be difficult to predict the presence of these co-pathologies early in the course of clinical disease. Timely diagnosis has crucial implications, especially with the advent of disease-modifying therapies. OBJECTIVES: We sought to define early motor features that predict the ultimate neuropathological diagnoses of normal, AD, AD with concurrent LB pathology, and pure LB. METHODS: We examined the associations between individuals' earl
