OBJECTIVE: To document haemopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) activity and trends among paediatric patients in Australia and New Zealand.
DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A retrospective analysis of data reported to the Australasian Bone Marrow Transplant Recipient Registry by the seven paediatric HSCT institutions in Australia and New Zealand over the 9-year period 1998-2006, with particular focus on the most recent years (2002-2006).

One hundred eleven patients who received 125 hematopoetic stem cell transplantations (HSCT) with myeloablative conditioning regimens were retrospectively evaluated for the development of cardiac toxicity (CT). The aims of this study were to assess the frequency of cardiac complications in patients receiving HSCT and to investigate the value of pretransplantation variables to predict posttransplantation CT. Severe grade III-IV CT was not observed in this cohort, in whom pretransplantation eligibility criteria excluded the patients with a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) of 50% or less.

Invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (IFR) is a life-threatening infection. Its onset is subtle and a late diagnosis leads to severe complications. Death may occur within a few weeks notwithstanding treatment. We describe a comprehensive pre- and post-operative approach to care for haematological patients with IFR. This paper describes an approach to summarize the data arising from studies investigating the pattern of disease onset within a calendar year. Cranial MRI was used to study treatment-related changes in children undergoing therapy for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) or lymphoma. Nineteen children (18 with ALL, 1 with lymphoma) underwent MRI at the beginning of treatment and at intervals during it, to a total of 105 imaging studies and a minimum of 3 per case. The incidence of hematological malignancies during pregnancy is low, and treatment in this setting is problematic. This study observed 21 pregnancies in 18 patients with hematological malignancies. Patients' ages were between 19 and 43 (median 25) years. The response of Philadelphia chromosome (Ph(+)) acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) to treatment by BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) has been disappointing, often resulting in short remissions typified by rapid outgrowth of drug-resistant clones. Therefore, new treatments are needed to improve outcomes for Ph(+) ALL patients. In a mouse model of Ph(+) B-lineage ALL, MCL-1 expression is dysregulated by the BCR-ABL oncofusion protein, and TKI treatment results in loss of MCL-1 expression prior to the induction of apoptosis, suggesting that MCL-1 may be an essential prosurvival molecule.
