[Disparity of fixation in asthenopic syndrome].

This study provides the first description of a test of fixation disparity that can be used in daily clinical practice. Exploration of this problem lays a basis for understanding, and allows rational prescription of the use of small prisms for the treatment of asthenopia associated with horizontal heterophoria. The fixation disparity is opposite to the heterophoria in almost 30% of cases. The test has a specificity of 71,5% for a study population of 55 patients. When the disparity test was abnormal, use of this examination demonstrated that the prescription of an adapted prism was effective in

Primary adherence to medications for the treatment of major depressive disorder: A descriptive study using real-world data.

BACKGROUND: Primary adherence (PA) to a medication occurs when a patient fills a newly prescribed medication within a predefined window. Failing to fill a necessary medication can have adverse downstream clinical consequences and increased costs. The extent of PA to major depressive disorder (MDD)-related medications in the United States is not well understood. OBJECTIVE: To describe overall primary adherence rates to MDD-related medications, both the initial prescription and at each subsequent switch in the patient's treatment journey. METHODS: We used deidentified electronic health record

Prescribing Patterns and Adverse Reactions of Antipsychotics in a North Indian Psychiatry Outpatient Department.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacovigilance research in India remains at an infantile phase, especially in the pattern of prescription of antipsychotics at the tertiary care level. Given the clinical value of antipsychotic drugs, research on their utilization, trends of prescription, and frequent adverse events associated with them will help to reduce adverse drug events. The proposed study is thus intended to discuss the prescription pattern and adverse drug reactions (ADRs) of antipsychotic drugs in the Psychiatric Outpatient unit in Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi, one

Psychedelic use in individuals living with eating disorders or disordered eating: findings from the international MED-FED survey.

BACKGROUND: There are few effective treatments for eating disorders (EDs), and new interventions are urgently needed. The MEDication and other drugs For Eating Disorders ("MED-FED") survey investigated the lived experience of adults with EDs regarding their prescription and non-prescription drugs use. Psychedelic drugs were highly rated in this survey for their impact on ED symptoms and general mental health. Here, we provide a more granular analysis of a subset of the data pertaining to psychedelic drug use from this survey. METHODS: The MED-FED survey recruited adults who self-reported eith

Effects of Substance Use on Condomless Anal Sex in a Large Sample of Adolescent Men Who Have Sex with Men: A Within and Between Relationship Design.

Substance use is a significant risk factor for HIV infection among adolescent men who have sex with men (AMSM). Substance use may reduce the use of HIV prevention measures or increase the likelihood of engaging in activities with a higher risk of HIV transmission, but there is a lack of studies dedicated to analyzing these mechanisms in adolescents and young MSM. This study aimed to explore the impact of substance use on condomless anal sex (CAS) in a large, racially diverse sample of AMSM. Additionally, we investigated how an individual's general level of substance use moderated the associati

Postoperative Opioid Prescribing Practices and Patient Opioid Utilization in Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Amid a national opioid epidemic, it is essential to review the necessity of opioid prescriptions. Research in adults has demonstrated patients often do not use their entire postoperative opioid prescription. Limited data suggest that the trend is similar in children. This study investigated the prescription volume and postoperative utilization rate of opioids among pediatric orthopaedic surgery patients at our institution. METHODS: We identified pediatric patients (ages below 18 y old) who presented to our institution for operating room intervention from May 24, 2021, to Decembe

Patterns of hypnotic prescribing for residual insomnia and recurrence of major depressive disorder: a retrospective cohort study using a Japanese health insurance claims database.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is highly prevalent in Japan and frequently accompanied by insomnia that may persist even with MDD remission. Hypnotics are used for the pharmacological treatment of insomnia, but their influence on MDD recurrence or residual insomnia following MDD remission is unclear. This retrospective, longitudinal, cohort study utilized a large Japanese health insurance claims database to investigate patterns of hypnotic prescriptions among patients with MDD, and the influence of hypnotic prescription pattern on MDD recurrence. METHODS: Eligible patients (20-56

Use of antiepileptic drugs and lipid-lowering agents in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: The extent to which enzyme-inducing antiepileptic drugs (EIAEDs) are used as first-line treatment in the United States remains unknown. Studies suggest that EIAEDs produce elevation of serum lipids, which could require additional treatment. We assessed the current use of EIAED in monotherapy for epilepsy in the U.S., as well as the correlation between the use of EIAEDs and subsequent new prescriptions for HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors ("statins") for hyperlipidemia. METHODS: We queried the MarketScan databases between July 2009 and January 2013, covering 66 million patients with

Provider knowledge of treatment policy and dosing regimen with artemether-lumefantrine and quinine in malaria-endemic areas of western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Due to widespread anti-malarial drug resistance in many countries, Kenya included, artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) has been adopted as the most effective treatment option against malaria. Artemether-lumefantrine (AL) is the first-line ACT for treatment of uncomplicated malaria in Kenya, while quinine is preferred for complicated and severe malaria. Information on the providers' knowledge and practices prior to or during AL and quinine implementation is scanty. The current study evaluated providers' knowledge and practices of treatment policy and dosing regimens with AL

Modeling symptom-acupoint interactions via a heterogeneous graph learning framework for intelligent acupoint recommendation.

OBJECTIVE: Acupuncture prescriptions involve complex compatibility mechanisms grounded in multi-symptom and multi-acupoint interactions, embodying millennia of clinical experience. Despite growing interest in computational acupoint recommendations, significant challenges persist due to sparse clinical data and the insufficient modelling of symptom-acupoint relationships, posing considerable hurdles to effective prediction. METHODS: We introduced an acupoint compatibility prediction framework with graph neural networks (GNN) and fine-tuned bidirectional encoder representations from transformer

Do patients with migraine and obesity receive different treatments? Insights from real-world data.

BACKGROUND: Patients with obesity often experience stigma in healthcare, which may lead to underdiagnosis or undertreatment. In the context of pain management, and migraine specifically, patients with obesity are more likely to receive both opioid and non-opioid analgesics. However, little is known about their use of preventive treatments. METHODS: We conducted a large retrospective cohort study using propensity score matching for sex and age, utilizing data from the Clalit Health Services database in Israel. The study compared newly diagnosed patients with migraine with and without obesity,
