Minority stress, mental health, and substance use in transgender youth: the moderating role of positive affect.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationships between gender minority stressors and mental health outcomes among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth and explore the moderating role of positive affect. METHOD: Baseline data of 315 TGD youth (ages 12-20 years old) from the Trans Youth Care-United States study comprised the analytic sample. Youth completed three subscales of the Gender Minority Stress and Resilience Measure for Adolescents (GMSR-A; nondisclosure of gender identity/gender history, negative future expectations, and internalized transphobia), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II),

Development and evaluation of the first fertility preservation patient decision aid to support boys and young men with cancer: The Cancer, Fertility and Me for Boys and Young Men research protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Many cancer treatments can result in reduced fertility, impacting survivors' opportunities for biological parenthood. Fertility preservation (FP) methods for boys and young men, such as cryopreservation of testicular tissue or sperm, offer hope but are currently underused among young male patients with cancer. Despite guidelines recommending early discussion of fertility implications, many newly diagnosed males do not receive FP counselling or referral to fertility services. Male cancer survivors face a higher likelihood of infertility than their peers, yet focused FP decision-ma

Network analysis of monoamines involved in anxiety-like behavior in a rat model of osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is a major health problem that affects a significant number of patients, resulting in personal suffering and substantial health care costs. One of the most commonly reported causal conditions is osteoarthritis (OA). In addition to sensory symptoms, chronic pain shares an inherent overlap with mood or anxiety disorders. The involvement of the frontal cortex, striatum and nucleus accumbens, in the affective processing of pain is still poorly understood. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were divided into two groups: MIA (monoiodoacetate injected into the knee-model of OA) and s

Professional liability due to complete esophagus section during thyroidectomy: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Several diagnostic and therapeutic processes are regulated by guidelines and recommendations provided by International and National Societies which offer standardized indications for health-care practitioners, including the treatment of pathologies that may affect the thyroid gland. These documents are very important for patient health promotion and, also, for preventing adverse events associated with patient injuries and related malpractice litigations. Particularly, thyroid surgery can be a cause of professional liability due to complications from surgical errors. Even if the mos

Moving toward transdisciplinary approaches to addressing HIV and psychological trauma: Barriers and facilitators to building collaborations.

Most people living with HIV have experienced potentially traumatic events (e.g., physical assault, sexual assault, intimate partner violence) and, consequently, are at risk of trauma-related mental health difficulties, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Yet, research and clinical efforts related to HIV and psychological trauma remain siloed. Guided by the four-phase model of transdisciplinary research, the current study explored barriers and facilitators to transdisciplinary HIV/trauma clinical and research collaborations to address the overlap between HIV and psychological trauma

Role of Optical Neuromonitoring in Neonatal Encephalopathy-Current State and Recent Advances.

Neonatal encephalopathy (NE) in term and near-term infants is a significant global health problem; the worldwide burden of disease remains high despite the introduction of therapeutic hypothermia. Assessment of injury severity and effective management in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) relies on multiple monitoring modalities from systemic to brain-specific. Current neuromonitoring tools provide information utilized for seizure management, injury stratification, and prognostication, whilst systemic monitoring ensures multi-organ dysfunction is recognized early and supported wherever ne

Design Requirements for a Digital Aid to Support Adults With Mild Learning Disabilities During Clinical Consultations: Qualitative Study With Experts.

BACKGROUND: Adults with mild learning disabilities (MLDs) face a plethora of obstacles when accessing effective health care. Central to many of these barriers is communication, with medical practitioners often remaining untrained on how to interact with patients who have learning disabilities (LDs). To date, research on how to promote this communication has largely centered on the development of low-tech aids. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of utilizing tablet technologies to promote communication between general practitioners and patients with MLDs. We a

Health-related quality of life after adverse bleeding events associated with antithrombotic drug therapy - A systematic review.

Little is known about the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) following adverse bleeding events associated with antithrombotic drug therapy. This systematic review assesses the HRQOL of patients who suffered a bleeding event related to antithrombotic drug use. A literature search was performed using PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library from inception through June 16, 2017. Studies measuring HRQOL after a bleeding event related to antithrombotic drug therapy for primary or secondary prevention of a thromboembolic event were included. Four studies with a total of 13,209 patients met the i

Child neglect and abuse: a global glimpse within the framework of evidence perspective.

AIM: This systematic review was conducted in order to integrate evidence-based knowledge and experience related to child neglect and abuse into the nursing literature. BACKGROUND: The negative and intense effects of neglect and abuse on an individual can last into adulthood. Nurses who are in close contact with such cases have an important role to play in detecting child neglect and abuse and supporting the families involved. When nurses fulfil this role, it is important that evidence-based information and interventions are known to ensure that the process is a healthy one. DATA SOURCES: Med

The Neurobiology and Psychiatric Perspective of Vaginismus: Linking the Pharmacological and Psycho-Social Interventions.

Vaginismus is an involuntary muscle contraction of the outer third of vaginal barrel causing sexual penetration almost impossible. It is generally classified under sexual pain disorder (SPD). In Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, 5th edition (DSM-5), it is classified under the new rubric of Genito-Pelvic Pain/Sexual Penetration Disorder. This fear-avoidance condition poses an ongoing significant challenge to the medical and health professionals due to the very demanding needs in health care despite its unpredictable prognosis. The etiology of vaginismus is complex: through multiple biopsycho-
