Patient radiation dosimetry for fluoroscopically guided interventions - a review of the history and limitations.

Fluoroscopically guided interventions (FGIs) play a critical role in modern medicine, though they potentially deliver high radiation doses that require accurate and patient-specific dosimetry for risk assessment and patient management. This review provides a historical overview of radiation dosimetry in fluoroscopy, tracing the evolution from rudimentary dose estimation methods to modern tools leveraging standardized dose indices and radiation dose structured reports (RDSRs) for radiation dosimetry at the skin surface as well as at depth in soft tissue. Despite these advancements, substantial

Influence of Infrared Laser Radiation on Morphometric Parameters of the Gingival Mucosa in Rats.

Optimal parameters of low-intensity laser radiation (LILR) in the infrared range for stimulation of the angiogenesis mechanisms in the gingival mucosa were determined in an experiment on rats. Following exposure of rat gingival mucosa to laser radiation at a wavelength of 970 nm and a power of 0.5 W, a significant increase in the number of mast cells expressing VEGFR1, endothelial cells of blood vessels expressing CD34 receptor, as well as an increase in the diameter and area occupied of blood vessels were noted. These data and the obtained strong correlations (r = 0.75-0.97; p < 0.05) indicat

The Cost of a Word: Radiation Therapy Versus Radiotherapy and Public Treatment Preferences.

PURPOSE: Patient perceptions of radiation treatment may influence acceptance of this therapy, yet the impact of treatment terminology on these perceptions has not been experimentally tested. We aimed to determine whether labeling the treatment as "radiotherapy" versus "radiation therapy" affects treatment choice and psychological perceptions. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We conducted a preregistered, parallel-group randomized survey experiment on a demographically representative sample of United States adults. Participants were randomly assigned to a standardized clinical vignette describing early

Performance of large language models on the radiation and cancer biology practice exam.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly used in medicine for tasks ranging from patient communication to exam preparation. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using a domain-specific, out-of-training-data radiation and cancer biology examination as a benchmarking framework for large language models, and to compare the accuracy and consistency of commonly used LLMs available at the time of data collection. METHODS: GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and Llama-2 were queried with 335 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) from the 2023 American Society for Radiation Oncology (AS

Improving timing and sequencing of postoperative radiation therapy in head and neck cancer.

BACKGROUND: The Commission on Cancer recognizes the importance of timing and sequencing care to improve the quality of health care delivery and cancer outcomes. In 2021, the Commission on Cancer established a quality metric for head and neck cancer to achieve postoperative radiation therapy within 6 weeks of surgery. The 4R Oncology Model is a teams-based framework that accounts for interdependency of care and allows for sustainable multilevel quality improvement in multiple other cancer types. We demonstrate the development of a 4R quality improvement framework to achieve this new Commission

Acoustic radiation force on a rigid sphere exerted by a Gaussian pulsed wave.

The transient acoustic radiation force from finite-duration pulses uniquely enables superior selectivity with simple hardware and fine spatial tuning. Unfortunately, most studies on acoustic radiation force have been conducted in steady-state acoustic fields, and the transient force from finite-duration pulses has not yet been fully investigated. Therefore, a unified transient acoustic radiation force theory for arbitrary-sized objects is presented, deriving from scattering theory a closed-form solution for pulse-parameter-dependent transient forces. In the monochromatic limit, the formulation

Modern Dressings in the Prophylaxis and Management of Acute Radiation Dermatitis: A Narrative Review.

Radiation-induced skin injury is the most common side effect of radiotherapy (RT), affecting up to 95% of patients. Severe skin reactions may restrict radiation delivery or limit further treatment. Acute radiation dermatitis (ARD) arises within three months of the initiation of RT and is characterized by erythema, desquamation, ulceration, and even necrosis. To prevent or manage ARD, multiple systemic and topical medications have been employed, including topical vitamins, metallic ointments, and dressings. Among them, dressings are widely used and competitive, as they provide an intact, moist

Ultraviolet Radiation in the Remediation of Cr(VI)-Contaminated Soil by Corn Stover.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation was selected in this study to evaluate its assistant remediation effects on Cr-contaminated soil. Various remediation materials, including corn stover (CS), corn stover biochar (CSB), polypyrrole-modified 44 corn stover (PPy-CS), and polypyrrole-modified corn stover biochar (PPy-CSB), were employed to evaluate their synergistic effects with UV radiation. The results showed that UV radiation increased the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) Cr(VI) when no other remediation was added to the contaminated soil. However, when the remediation materials were a

Systemic induction of peroxidase and phenolic responses to UV radiation in Nicotiana tabacum.

Systemic changes in isoperoxidase profile and phenolic composition mirror those in leaves exposed to ultraviolet radiation, underscoring the essential role of systemic responses in plant health and development. Plants respond to direct exposure to broadband ultraviolet (UV) light (280-400 nm) through localized protective and regulatory mechanisms. In our recent study using Nicotiana tabacum as a model plant, we showed that protective responses triggered by moderate, non-harmful UV doses could spread from directly treated leaves to UV-unexposed leaves situated above (systemic leaves). This stud

Radiation-induced morphoea in the setting of previous breast cancer: A case report.

Radiation-induced morphoea is an under-recognised complication of radiotherapy that can cause significant pain, functional impairment, and disfigurement. It is frequently misdiagnosed due to its non-specific presentation. We report the case of a 70-year-old female with prior right breast invasive ductal carcinoma, status post-lumpectomy, who developed painful cutaneous thickening and atrophy within the irradiated field 18 months after adjuvant radiotherapy. Malignant recurrence was excluded, and biopsy revealed dermal sclerosis with collagen thickening consistent with radiation-induced morphoe

Nonpharmacologic Approaches for Pain Management in Patients With Cancer Treated With Radiation Therapy.

Radiation therapy (RT) is central to cancer treatment, yet pain from RT-related toxicities remains common and often inadequately controlled with pharmacologic care alone. Integrative medicine modalities are increasingly used to complement standard analgesic strategies, but their role in RT-related pain has not been comprehensively synthesized. In this narrative review, we summarize clinical evidence for nonpharmacologic approaches to RT-related pain, including acupuncture, massage, hypnosis, yoga, and exercise. We further include strategies for incorporating these modalities across the RT care

[Current status and prospects in the diagnosis and treatment of radiation-induced intestinal injury].

The widespread adoption of radiotherapy for pelvic malignancies has substantially improved tumor control, yet the resulting radiation-induced intestinal injury (RII) poses a growing threat to patients' quality of life and long-term functional outcomes. To provide a comprehensive understanding of this field, this review summarizes recent advances in the pathological mechanisms, diagnostic classification, multidisciplinary treatment strategies, and preventive approaches for RII. Current evidence identifies a complex interplay among intestinal stem cell damage, vascular endothelial dysfunction, o

The Efficacy of Hydrogel Dressings in Management and Prevention of Radiation Dermatitis: A Comparative Review.

Radiation dermatitis (RD) is one of the most common adverse effects of radiotherapy and significantly impacts patient comfort, quality of life, and treatment adherence. Effective supportive care strategies are therefore essential to preserve skin integrity and prevent treatment interruption. Among available wound care options, hydrogel dressings have emerged as promising biomaterials due to their ability to maintain a moist environment, reduce transepidermal water loss, provide cooling relief, and enable atraumatic removal. This review aims to critically evaluate the role of hydrogel dressings

A Kangfuxin-Loaded Lipid Gel for the Management of Radiation Dermatitis: Repair and Protection.

Radiation therapy often causes oxidative stress and inflammation in normal tissues due to the generation of excessive radiation-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS). This can subsequently lead to radiation-induced skin injury (RISI), which manifests as tissue damage ranging from dermatitis to ulcers. One approach to addressing these challenges is to develop biocompatible functional materials that can facilitate repair and improve treatment tolerance by neutralizing ROS. In this study, a water-responsive lipid gel (LG) delivery system was constructed using Kangfuxin liquid (KFX, the ethanol ex

Definitive Radiation Therapy for Schneiderian Inverted Papilloma of the Soft Palate and Uvula.

Schneiderian inverted papilloma is a benign, locally aggressive tumor that typically arises in the respiratory mucosa of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. These tumors are often asymptomatic but can cause unilateral nasal obstruction, discharge, hyposmia and epistaxis. They warrant attention particularly due to the potential for malignant transformation. They are treated most often with surgical excision. This case report describes a patient with Schneiderian inverted papilloma arising outside its usual location and managed with definitive radiation therapy instead of surgical excision d

Research progresses on the regulatory roles of microRNAs in radiation-induced pulmonary fibrosis.

Radiation-induced pulmonary fibrosis (RIPF) is a chronic fibrotic lung disease triggered by ionizing radiation exposure and is characterized by abnormal epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), fibroblast proliferation and activation, and excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition. As a late-stage pulmonary complication of radiation exposure, RIPF lacks effective clinical interventions. Although nintedanib and pirfenidone are approved antifibrotic drugs for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), their efficacy against RIPF remains insufficiently validated. The precise pathogenesis of RIPF r

Development of PLX-R18, a promising and novel countermeasure for radiation-associated injuries.

PLX-R18 is a novel cell-based product of ex vivo expanded adherent human-placenta-derived stromal cells. After intramuscular administration, these living cells are capable of secreting various cytokines that produce a therapeutic benefit. The endogenously secreted cytokines facilitate the recovery of hematopoietic progenitor cells and regenerate multiple blood lineage cells. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that PLX-R18 cells can prevent and also mitigate hematopoietic acute radiation syndrome in experimental animal models. This agent has an open US Food and Drug Administration investigat
